The Engineering Sciences Center is seeking a student intern to contribute to the understanding of the dynamic behavior of structures to operational and laboratory environments. We are looking for a highly motivated, team-oriented individual that is capable of supporting programs in this technical area. The successful candidate will have a strong technical interest in experimental structural dynamics and will be responsible for setting up and performing experiments and processing the resulting data.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
Assist staff members in structural dynamics, vibration, acoustics, shock, or solid mechanics testing
Assist in processing data using various software systems, including MatLab, Python, LabView, SolidWorks, etc.
Conduct directed research current state of the art in these fields utilizing scientific literature
Help plan and design experiments, write reports in PowerPoint or Word
Partner with Staff and graduate interns to support experimental projects

Qualifications We Require
You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:
Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited undergraduate program
Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major
Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
Ability to work up to 25 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer
Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship

About Our Team
The Structural Dynamics Department (01522) is an integral part of the Engineering Sciences Center at Sandia National Laboratories. Our Center is the steward of engineering mechanics and dynamics for Sandia, and we are dedicated to solving our customers most pressing and important national security problems. Our department comprises the System-Level Vibration Testing Lab and the Modal Lab. The Vibe Lab specializes in conducting mission-critical mechanical environments tests for qualification and acceptance evidence of full systems. The Modal Lab specializes in experimental diagnostic methods to characterize the inherent dynamic properties of structures and their complex response under operational environments. We also support instrumentation efforts for high-consequence environmental tests and field data collection operations. We collaborate closely with our colleagues in the Analytical Structural Dynamics and Environmental Engineering departments. Our department also maintains a considerable R&D portfolio with focus areas including hybrid system modeling/sub structuring, advanced multi-axis ground testing methods, nonlinear dynamics, transfer path analysis, experimental uncertainty quantification, and high-speed non-contact diagnostics. In this role, you will work collaboratively with Sandia National Laboratories R&D staff to perform cutting-edge research, analyze experimental data, develop models, and run simulations.
On any given day, you ma be called on to:
Design and implement hardware and components for experimental thermofluid test systems including supercritical CO2 and molten salt fluid flow loops.
Employ CFD packages and high-fidelity research codes to simulate and analyze these processes system components, such as heat exchangers, piping, and manifolds, to predict outlet conditions and ensure safe loop operation.
Assist in the fabrication, assembly, and installation of hardware into operational test loops.
Compare and validate CFD simulation results against experimental data, and troubleshoot discrepancies between predicted and observed system behavior.
Participate in the design, planning, and execution of thermofluid experiments and conduct experiments to characterize thermodynamic properties, heat transfer behavior, and particle physics phenomena in molten salt.
Collaborate with the engineering team to refine models, improve hardware designs, and enhance system performance.

Security Clearance

Pulsed power compresses energy in both time and space and can generate short electrical pulses with more power than the world's total electrical power capability. Sandia is a world leader in pulsed power and its applications to study radiation effects, materials properties under extreme conditions, and inertial confinement fusion. Department 1656, part of the Pulsed Power Science and Technology group (1650), is dedicated to advancing the capabilities of the Z-machine and future high-energy density machines. We lead the development of advanced pulsed power energy storage and switching technologies. Our focus includes pioneering research in advanced Marx technology, new capacitor assessments, and innovative gas switch advancements. By collaborating closely with sister departments in 1650, we aim to rapidly advance the state of the art in pulsed power, addressing the ZX Initiative and preparing for the design of next-generation pulsed power machines. We led design of the injector for the cutting-edge Scorpius flash x-ray radiography system and continue overseeing assembly and commissioning. Security Clearance
This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance.
Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Furthermore, employees in New Mexico need to pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to Kirtland Air Force Base. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment. Qualifications We Require

Our student interns are offered hands-on, flexible, and cutting-edge research opportunities while being mentored by Sandia National Laboratories scientists and engineers. These real-world experiences are supplemented with technical seminars and facility tours which give our students unique insight into the broad range of engineering and scientific disciplines represented at Sandia.
Students will be called upon to apply their skills in computer programming, machine learning, hands-on data collection and reduction, and integrated multi-physics simulation environments. Students will work collaboratively over the course of the internship with a mentor and affiliated team members to deliver high-impact results ultimately suitable for publication in leading technical journals and conferences. Collect and analyze various data sets related to geophysics, geotechnology, atmospheric science, geomechanics, geochemistry, subsurface science, and renewable energy technologies, including wind and wave power, geothermal energy, solar photovoltaics, and concentrating solar.
Present summer research at the end-of-summer FORSEES student symposium.
Collaborate on research papers, reports, and presentations.
Run existing modeling codes and developing new models and algorithms.

The Nonlinear Mechanics and Dynamics (NOMAD) Research Institute is an 8-week long program held at the University of New Mexico (UNM) that brings together researchers from around the world to work on challenging research problems in engineering sciences. The Component Science and Mechanics Department is seeking motivated and productive student interns to contribute to a number of summer research projects. The internship will provide you with opportunities to work in diverse research teams, to participate in a research project that will be presented at a final seminar series, and to engage/network with professionals working within their research fields. The teams generally consist of 3 interns and 3-5 mentors per project team.
Implementing Multi-Input-Multi-Output Shock Capabilities
Multi-Input-Multi-Output (MIMO) testing capabilities have been recently implemented as an alternative to vibration shaker tables. They have many advantages, including more realistic boundary conditions, portable setups, and lower costs. This project will focus on the development and implementation of MIMO shock testing, including writing and implementing MIMO shock environment specifications, using MIMO shock capabilities in the Rattlesnake control software, and model integration with MIMO shock test data.
Dynamically informed topology optimization of nonlinear bolted structures
A recently developed topology optimization capability produces mock components that match the structural dynamics of the actual component, enabling higher-fidelity information earlier in the design process. Challenges to implementation include accounting for bolted joints when components are printed in multiple pieces, and distortion of thin-walled structures. This project will address these challenges using an additively manufactured, modally representative baseball bat.
Chaotic vibration response of nonlinear components under forced vibration
High-fidelity numerical simulations of complex electromechanical devices have shown extreme sensitivity to non-physical parameters. This observed behavior is reminiscent of chaotic behavior for nonlinear dynamical systems. The goal of this project is to perform a set of vibration experiments to evaluate the sensitivity of the measured vibration response to various conditions, assess whether the system is behaving chaotically, and apply approaches to analyzing chaotic responses for a deterministic system.
Microstructure-Property Relationships in Tantalum Alloys
Understanding the effect of microstructure on ductility is vital to model tantalum alloys. The goal of this project is to understand the relationship between microstructure and macroscale response through modeling and simulation activities in tantalum alloys. Students will employ crystal plasticity and continuum-scale finite element models. Results will inform how grain morphology and crystallographic texture affect material response and reveal connections between micro- and macro-scale model parameters to facilitate multiscale modeling.
Experimental characterization of gas transport in a vibrated multiphase system
This project aims to characterize vibrated liquid-gas interface breakup and subsequent gas transport in a simple multiphase system by acquiring and quantitatively analyzing images from high-speed videography. The desired outcome is an improved understanding of how these processes depend on key parameters, including vibration amplitude, vibration frequency, and total gas volume fraction.
Predicting Printability of Particle-Laden Inks
Additive manufacturing technologies based on material extrusion hinge on particle-laden inks that are printable. A new criterion based on particle loading in the ink differentiates printable inks from poor inks. The students will leverage existing datasets to perform particle packing simulations. Particle suspension constitutive equations to capture the rheology coupled to level set methods will be evaluated. Experiments will assess the impacts of feedstock modifications on printability to maximize particle loading.

On a given day, you may be called on to:
Contribute to the design and development of a new nuclear weapon concept using the engineering or science field of your major.
Conduct research into current/existing US Policy provisions regarding nuclear weapons, including previous Nuclear Posture Reviews, Presidential Nuclear Initiatives, Congressional Research Service Reports, and Arms Control Treaties.
Create research objectives coordinated with members of Sandias Global Security center, Advanced and Exploratory Systems, and Systems Analysis.
Write reports and/or prepare briefings regarding US Policy, and its relation to technology options to address future Nuclear Deterrence needs.
Deliver and communicate research results to the above stakeholders at Sandia and possibly external equities.

About Our Team
The Exploratory Nuclear Weapon Systems Department, 0236, is a National leader in threat-informed and anticipatory Nuclear Weapon system concept design and technology assessment. We provide leadership to the Nuclear Deterrence portfolio at Sandia in order to execute nuclear weapon concept exploration, guide necessary technology maturation, and integrate operational system prototypes for options that span the Technology Readiness Level scale. Department 0236 is a multidisciplinary engineering team with experience ranging across integrated hardware flight testing, nuclear weapon component and system design, program execution with external partners, early phase nuclear weapon program execution, beyond horizon technologies, operational experience, and strategic technology planning. Security Clearance
This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance.
Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Security Clearance
This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance.
Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Furthermore, employees in New Mexico need to pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to Kirtland Air Force Base. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment. Under federal law, citizens and agents of the People's Republic of China, the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Democratic People's Republic of North Korea, and the Russian Federation are generally prohibited from accessing Sandia National Laboratories. Accordingly, such individuals will not be considered for employment unless they are also a citizen of the United States.
If hired without a clearance and it subsequently becomes necessary to obtain and maintain one for the position, or you bid on positions that require a clearance, a pre-processing background review may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation. Members of the workforce (MOWs) hired at Sandia who require uncleared access for greater than 179 days during their employment, are required to go through the Uncleared Personal Identity Verification (UPIV) process. Access includes physical and/or cyber (logical) access, as well as remote access to any NNSA information technology (IT) systems. UPIV requirements are not applicable to individuals who require a DOE personnel security clearance for the performance of their SNL employment or to foreign nationals. The UPIV process will include the completion of a USAccess Enrollment, SF-85 (Questionnaire for Non-Sensitive Positions) and OF-306 (Declaration of for Federal Employment). An unfavorable UPIV determination will result in immediate retrieval of the SNL issued badge, removal of cyber (logical) access and/or removal from SNL subcontract. All MOWs may appeal the unfavorable UPIV determination to DOE/NNSA immediately. If the appeal is unsuccessful, the MOW may try to go through the UPIV process one year after the decision date.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs

The Radiation and Electrical Code Development & Analyses Group is seeking a motivated graduate summer intern working toward an advanced degree in electrical engineering, nuclear engineering, computer science, physics, mathematics, or a related discipline to participate in the development of computational tools in plasma physics, electromagnetics, radiation transport, neutronics, or electrical circuits and devices.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
Participate in the modeling, design, and development of electrical systems, including plasmas, electromagnetic fields, radiation transport, neutronics, and/or circuit-level simulations
Apply basic understanding of physics and engineering principles, theories, concepts, and practices
Apply previous experience in modeling and simulation tools used in support of radiation and electrical design and analysis activities
Work successfully in a dynamic, interdisciplinary, teaming environment
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite
Salary Range

Qualifications We Require
You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:
Earned bachelor's degree
Currently attending and enrolled full time in the spring term immediately preceding the internship (or scheduled to graduate in the spring) in an accredited science, engineering, or math graduate program
Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer
Ability to secure and maintatin a U.S. security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship

Qualifications We Desire
Senior-level or graduate coursework in plasma physics, electromagnetics, radiation transport, neutronics, circuit design/analysis, or device physics
Proficiency in both interpreted and compiled programming languages (C/C++, Fortran, Python, Matlab, etc.)
Ability to work successfully in a dynamic, interdisciplinary, teaming environment.
Excellent communication and documentation skills
Experience with commercial/academic electrical simulation tools
Thesis/dissertation topic on computational or applied plasma physics, computational or applied electromagnetics, radiation transport, neutronics, circuit design/analysis, or device physics.
