Sandler O’Neill & Partners company history timeline

1988

Sandler O'Neill + Partners, L.P. was founded in 1988 by Herman S. Sandler, Thomas O’Neill and four other executives from the firm Bear Stearns.

1998

The first was opened in Boston in 1998.

2002

In early 2002, Sandler O'Neill moved from the Solow Building to 919 Third Avenue.

2003

Offices in Atlanta and San Francisco were opened in 2003.

2004

A final satellite office was opened in 2004 in Chicago.

2010

In 2010, the firm sold a substantial minority to two private equity firms: the Carlyle Group and Kelso & Company.

2011

Aaron Dorr, who joined Sandler O'Neill in 2011 to head its asset management investment banking practice, also advised on the TD Ameritrade and Schwab deal.

2013

Sandler O'Neill celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2013.

2019

Sandler O'Neill, which is mostly known for its work with banks, landed at least three $1 billion-plus depository M&A assignments in each of the last four years but worked on none through the first 10 months of 2019.

In 2019, the company was acquired by Piper Sandler Companies.
