Club Minutes: Mutual Improvement Association, June-July 1868

1880

Being much attuned to the topic of vaccines these days, my eye was immediately caught when Doctor C.E. Iddings wrote in his diary on January 20, 1880, of receiving “vaccine quills from the State Agent.” Tucked in the back of the diary was this receipt for the very same.

1881

Diary: Doctor Caleb Edward Iddings, January 23-27, 1881

1884

As deduced from an account ledger, a series of mishaps and recovery issues had local physician Doctor Caleb Edward Iddings visiting the Johnson family thirty-three times in the first three months of 1884, the most visits to any family the doctor would conduct throughout the entire year.

Contributions from the community were submitted and the Committee announced the winner at the 268th meeting held August 18, 1921.

1965

He built his first wood kiln in 1965, and taught ceramics for 33 years at SUNY-Cortland.

1966

They celebrated their Centennial Meeting in January of 1966 and the Minutes give a fine overview of the Club’s history.

1973

After serving as a minister for twenty years, Davis’s life changed when he took his first ceramics class in 1973.

1978

Bancroft’s trove of paintings housed at Norwood were sold with his estate in 1978 and donated to the Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

1980

September 3, 1980 – First meeting of the Museum Founding Committee of the Sandy Spring Museum, Inc. was called by Delmas P. Wood, Jr.

The meeting was held in the lower level of the Sandy Spring Bank in Sandy Spring, MD October 1, 1980 – The Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws of the Sandy Spring Museum are adopted.

1981

Sandy Spring Museum was founded in 1981 when a group of residents led by Delmas Wood, an insurance salesman and auctioneer, noted that the community’s history was being sold off with every passing of a long-time resident.

1981 – The first Collections Acquisitions Policy Statement is adopted.

1986

October 12, 1986 – Sandy Spring Museum officially moves into Tall Timbers with a grand opening celebration.

1998

MANHATTAN SHORT began in 1998, when Mason screened 16 short films onto a screen mounted to the side of a truck on Mulberry Street, Little Italy New York City.

2001

2014 – The museum receives a $130,000 three-year grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services to fund its community-driven programs and collaborations with cultural artists.

2017

The two met in 2017 when Francis was an Artist-in-Residence at the prestigious Strathmore Institute for Artistic and Professional Development.

ARTINA 2017 created awareness among visitors of the need to reconnect with the land and preserve nature for future generations.

2018

Black was one of 31 people to die in Maryland in an officer-involved incident in 2018. “Anton’s Law” can prevent this from happening in the future.

2019

2020

2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th amendment granting (primarily) white middle-class women the right to vote.
