    Primary Purpose The Cadet will be trained, educated, instructed and evaluated while in a Fire Academy conducted by the Santa Fe County Fire Department to serve and protect the people of Santa Fe County as an entry level firefighter and EMT-Basic. Please note: EMT-B and EMT-I applications are also being accepted as part of this recruitment. Essential Job Functions Under immediate supervision, while in a training capacity, the firefighter cadet will begin to develop qualifications for the position of Firefighter/EMT. The firefighter cadet receives instruction, training and education during both a rigorous class schedule conducted primarily in a Fire Academy structure and during in-the-field apparatus or station assignments. The Santa Fe County Fire Department Fire Academy instructors will introduce the Cadet to fire department policies, procedures, standard operation guidelines in fire suppression, hazardous materials handling, rescue techniques, emergency medical technician-basic, safety procedures, community relations, operation and maintenance of firefighting equipment, apparatus and physical fitness. The Cadet will be required to satisfactorily perform all training, instruction, education and skills mandated for Fire Academy graduation. The Cadet may be required to perform administrative duties and/or other duties as assigned. The Cadet is required to attend an intense Fire Training Academy and become certified as a Firefighter II. Must pass an annual physical agility/capacity test and physical fitness/physical capacity testing conducted throughout the Fire Academy. The work schedule during the Fire Academy is forty (40) hours per week, unless there is an emergency situation. Arduous physical exertion is required under unusual situations. Annual physical capacity testing is required to determine fitness for duty. The Cadet must be able to lift 50 lbs. drag 185 lbs. for 75 feet and pass subsequent annual physical capacity tests administered by the fire department. Manual and finger dexterity is required. May be subject to exposure to heat, heights, smoke, cuts, bruises, scrapes, burns, broken bones, insect and or animal bites, germs, bacteria, viruses, environmental allergens, gases, fumes, contagious diseases, mental anguish under emergency conditions, Cathode Ray Tubes, and Visual Display Terminals. The Cadet may be subject to life-threatening situations under very intense and extreme conditions. Conditions of Employment: Selected candidate must submit to and pass a County paid pre-employment physical to include all regulations under DOT and OSHA Certifications, drug/alcohol screening, and a psychological profile exam. Additionally, selected candidate must submit to and pass a County paid criminal background screening. Works closely with Santa Fe, Pojoaque, Edgewood and other school districts to assess prevention needs and facilitate activities. Special Assignment Public Awareness: Work with the staff and DWI Planning Council to develop and implement a multimedia plan to increase public awareness regarding DWI and underage drinking in Santa Fe County. Messages must be prevention oriented, ranging from those focused on increasing perceived risk of law enforcement activities and legal, social and health consequences. Develop and implement an incentive/reward program for City, County and State law enforcement and the judiciary systems. Compile and publicize relevant DWI statistics related to arrest, DWI crashes, injury crashes and fatalities in Santa Fe County and related consequences such as vehicle forfeiture. Work with all law enforcement agencies to coordinate Santa Fe County DWI efforts. Develop, maintain and publicize a calendar of DWI enforcement events and activities, including checkpoints, saturation patrols and warrant roundups. Insure that press releases related to DWI and other alcohol-related law enforcement activities are prepared and sent at in a timely manner. Support operations to address outstanding DWI warrants in Santa Fe County. Calendar, support and publicize underage drinking operations with the law enforcement. Work cooperatively with state, county, tribal and local agencies to promote Super blitz, 100 Days of Summer and other law enforcement activities. Oversee the development and distribution of marketing materials. Manage Public Awareness contracts and reporting. Knowledge/Skills: Knowledge of: a) substance abuse prevention, b) curriculum development, c) budget process, d) office procedures, e) teaching/training techniques/models, and f) community assessment and strategic planning. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent. Ability to obtain and maintain ACO 1 and ACO 2 certifications within three (3) months of hire. Supplemental Information Working Conditions: Work is performed occasionally in an office environment and frequently outdoors in varied weather conditions with exposure to dust, fumes, airborne particles and/or allergens. Work involves high risk or potentially dangerous situations, exposure to hazardous materials, excessive noise, hostile individuals, and work near hazardous/moving equipment or machinery. Work requires the use of protective clothing, equipment, devices or materials. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to stand, walk, and sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands or arms; stoop, kneel or crouch; and talk or hear. Ability to lift over 100 lbs. Clarity of vision at long distance and short distance is required. Evening, holiday, and weekend work is required. Overnight travel is required. Conditions of Employment: Selected candidate must submit to and pass a County paid pre-employment physical and drug/alcohol screening. Additionally, selected candidate must submit to and pass a county paid criminal background screening. Selected candidate must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Class D Driver's License as incumbent shall be appointed to drive a County vehicle during the performance of his/her duties. Candidate must obtain and/or maintain all certifications required.
