Senior Workout Officer - Must have Commercial Real Estate Workout experience.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Portfolio Management
Manage a portfolio of mid- to high-complexity distressed commercial real estate loans, focusing on rent-regulated multifamily assets in NYC.
Evaluate collateral performance, borrower financials, and guarantor support to identify risks and recommend appropriate workout strategies.
Develop and execute resolution plans including loan modifications, forbearances, restructurings, the pursuit of various remedies.
Monitor ongoing borrower compliance, property performance, and loan covenant adherence.
Commercial Loan Documentation
Review, interpret, and negotiate commercial loan documents, including notes, mortgages, guarantees, intercreditor agreements, and forbearance or modification agreements.
Partner with internal and external counsel to ensure documentation accuracy and adherence to internal credit and regulatory standards.
Identify legal and structural issues that could impact collateral recovery or enforceability.
Underwriting & Financial Analysis
Conduct comprehensive underwriting of rent-regulated multifamily properties, including evaluation of rent rolls, regulatory compliance, operating statements, capital needs, and market dynamics.
Perform financial modeling, collateral valuations, and risk assessments to support loan resolution recommendations.
Prepare and present detailed credit memoranda and action plans to management and credit committees.
Negotiation & Relationship Management
Lead negotiations with institutional borrowers, sponsors, investors, and legal representatives to achieve balanced, risk-mitigated outcomes.
Maintain initiative-taking and professional communication with borrowers and internal stakeholders throughout the workout process.
Foreclosure & REO Oversight
Oversee and manage judicial foreclosure processes, coordinating with counsel to ensure compliance with state laws and procedural requirements.
Manage Real Estate Owned (REO) assets post-foreclosure, including stabilization, valuation, and disposition.
Collaborate with internal Real Estate and Asset Management teams to optimize recovery and minimize holding costs.
Compliance, Policy, and Regulatory Adherence
Ensure all actions comply with internal policies, risk management frameworks, and regulatory requirements.
Maintain thorough loan files, workout documentation, and regulatory reporting consistent with audit and examination standards.
Demonstrate a strong understanding of credit policy and ensure all recommendations and actions are appropriately supported and documented.

Qualifications
Education:

Experience:
Minimum 9+ years of experience in commercial real estate workouts, special assets, or credit risk management within a regulated financial institution.
Proven experience reviewing and negotiating commercial loan documentation and complex legal structures.

The Difference You Make:
The Associate, Business Control & Risk Management operates within the First Line of Defense and is accountable to assist the Business Control & Risk Management team in driving effective and consistent business line execution against the Enterprise Risk Management Framework. Proactively complete KYC Refresh for existing customers to maintain up-to-date and accurate data.
Support timely completion of KYC Questionnaires (KYCQs) and ensure customer data remains current.
Ensure all KYC obligations are met for various banking scenarios including new deposit accounts, new loans, cash management product additions, loan modifications, trade finance activities, changes in ownership or AML risk ratings, and periodic KYC refreshes.
Provide Subject Matter Expert (SME) guidance to enhance RM/RO and customer experience.
Participate in maintaining First Line AML procedures, guides, checklists, and key customer forms.
Ensure compliance is right the first time by effectively mitigating AML risk at the outset and ensuring adherence to BSA/AML and OFAC requirements.
Perform Adverse Media Screening and/or Transaction Monitoring for certain customers.

Expected base pay rates for the role will be between $78,000 and $140,000 per year at the commencement of employment. Manage and mentor individual production team members and first time managers. This includes training, active feedback, performance management and performance evaluations.
Establish regular lines of communication for upward and downward management with all direct reports and co-direct reports.
Manage approximately 5-8 direct reports on a daily basis
Provide regular feedback on client service expectations to group.
Work with Client Service VPs to execute Objectives & Key Results (OKRs) and maintain healthy Key Risk Indicators (KRIs).
Facilitate workload distribution amongst the team.
Help the team with day-to-day workflow, identifying activities that need to be escalated/prioritized, and facilitating the review and remediation of escalated items.
Serve as the escalation point for client relationships and team members, as well as intradepartmental requests, including error resolution. Utilize informed discretion regarding the need for further escalations with a solution orientated mindset.
Participate as needed on client conference calls and meetings.
Proactively seek opportunities to improve team processes to reduce risk and improve efficiencies, leveraging a growth-oriented mindset.
Help lead and implement ad-hoc team projects and initiatives, communicating needs to team.
Serve as a knowledge expert among peers and other departments. Deep understanding of the “whys” behind processes.
Partner with leadership across the organization to carry out goals of the team and department.
Create and oversee reports to mitigate risk within the organization.
Proactively seek opportunities to improve efficiencies within the team and department.
Help monitor and manage efforts pertaining to business continuity and resiliency.
Create and maintain content for learning and development purposes across group.
Proactively maintain and/or establish new controls within group to mitigate risk; lead the drafting and maintenance of channel guides/ master process guides/ team policies and procedures.
Help facilitate the development, testing, and deployment of new technology releases/ applications on behalf of group.
Work with Vice President to generate metrics and create reports that assist in determining resource needs by recognizing key trends.
Job Requirements
4-year degree, preferably in related discipline such as economics, finance, or marketing; work experience in lieu of degree will be considered.
5+ year's proven experience working with financial services advisors, preferably in a client service role.
2+ years of direct team leadership experience.
Strong relationship building skills.
Excellent communication skills - in writing/oral with internal/external partners.
Experience with RIA/Wire and Independent community, separate accounts, UMAs, tax-efficient products and indexing a plus.
Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
Strong ability to learn new processes and systems.
Exhibits clear project management skills; managing deadlines, keeping stakeholders informed, anticipating roadblocks, preparing back-up plans, etc.

Expected base pay rates for the role will be between $78,000 and $140,000 per year at the commencement of employment. However, base pay if hired will be determined on an individualized basis and is only part of the total compensation package, which, depending on the position, may also include commission earnings, incentive compensation, discretionary bonuses, other short and long-term incentive packages, and other Morgan Stanley sponsored benefit programs.
