Sartorius company history timeline

1916

In 1916, Richard Zsigmondy together with Wilhelm Bachmann invents the membrane filter.

1918

Since two of his sons, Julius and Florence Jr., had died in 1918, the responsibility for the company went over to the shoulders of Wilhelm as commercial and Erich as technical director.

1922

Richard Zsigmondy (photo) invents the "cold ultrafilter" in 1922.

1925

The founder of the company, Florence Sartorius Sr. (photo), passed away in 1925.

1927

The foundation of the membrane filter company "Membranfilter-Gesellschaft m.b.H." in Goettingen in 1927 is another cornerstone in Sartorius’ company history (photo).

1978

2001

German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder officially opens "Plant 2001" for filter production in Goettingen.

2005

A.T. Kearney, a global management consultancy, and "WirtschaftsWoche", a German weekly business news magazine, honor Sartorius as the "Best Innovator in 2005" in the Time-to-Profit category.

2006

The international consulting company "Frost & Sullivan" confers the "2006 Growth Strategy Leadership Award" to Sartorius for its successful market segment of moisture analyzers.

2007

In 2007, Sartorius AG merged its Biotechnology Division with Stedim, creating Sartorius Stedim Biotech that is headquartered in Aubagne, France.

2012

In January 2012, Sartorius conducts its business operations in three new divisions: Bioprocess Solutions, Lab Products & Services and Industrial Weighing.

2019

The new laboratory and office complex will approximately double the company’s space and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2019.
