Saunders House company history timeline
The Civil War intervened, and the project was put on hold until a new charter was applied for and granted in April of 1864.
Located in Wynnewood, PA, Saunders House – originally known as The Old Man’s Home of Philadelphia – opened its doors in 1864 to afford relief and the comforts of home to older men of reduced financial means.
With a large fortune, in 1892, he invested in a home on Summit Avenue.
The house at 323 Summit Avenue was built in 1893 for Edward and Mary Saunders.
All of these elements except the staircase survived a substantial remodeling of the house made by the Clowes family in 1903.
The Clowes family lived in the dwelling for the next ninety years, altering and expanding it in the early twentieth century, before they sold it in 1945.
The east passage partition in the original section was removed in the 1958 work, the jalousie windows installed, and other changes made to the house.
The Old Man’s Home later evolved to become Saunders House, as it began admitting women in 1960.
Since 1962 the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation has owned the building.
Saunders House moved from its original location at 39th Street and Powelton Avenue in West Philadelphia to its current location on the campus of Lankenau Hospital in 1973.
