Richard G. Rowan, Paula S. Wallace, May L. Poetter and Paul E. Poetter legally incorporated the Savannah College of Art and Design September 29, 1978.
November: Actor, athlete and artist Bernie Casey becomes the chairman of the board of trustees, replacing Hugh Dorsey, who had been chairman since 1978.
In September 1979, the university first began offering classes with four staff members, seven faculty members, and 71 students.
In the spring of 1979, SCAD purchased and renovated the Savannah Volunteer Guard Armory to serve as the first classroom and administration building.
In May 1981, the first graduate received a degree.
