Savannah State University company history timeline
Savannah State University was founded as a result of the Second Morrill Land Grant Act of August 30, 1890.
On November 26, 1890, the Georgia General Assembly passed legislation creating the Georgia State Industrial College for Colored Youth.
In October 1891, the college was moved to its present location, with Major Richard R. Wright as its first president.
The college operated in Athens for several months in 1891 before moving to its permanent location in Savannah on October 7, 1891, with Wright as the first president.
Originally named the Georgia State Industrial College for Colored Youth, the school met in Athens, Georgia for less than a year before moving to a campus in Savannah in 1891, where it remains to this day.
Richard R. Wright, Jr., the son of Richard R. Wright, Sr., who was the school’s first president and primary founder, earned the school’s first baccalaureate degree in 1898.
The college awarded its first baccalaureate degree in 1898.
In 1921 the first female students were admitted.
Upon the creation of the University System of Georgia (USG) in 1932, the college became one of the first members of the system and its name was changed to Georgia State College.
In January 1950, the college changed its name to Savannah State College.
In 1950, it had grown substantially and was renamed Savannah State College.
The teacher education program was transferred from SSU in 1979 as part of a federally mandated USG desegregation plan.
The USG Board of Regents elevated the college to university status in 1996 and renamed the institution Savannah State University.
With the growth in its graduate and research programs, in 1996 the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia elevated Savannah State College to the status of state university and the name was changed to Savannah State University.
In 2013, the SSU School of Teacher Education was reestablished at SSU with emphasis on preparation of middle and high school teachers in STEM disciplines.
SSU sent cutting-edge genetic material from campus laboratories to the International Space Station (ISS) in 2014.
Savannah State also earned two patents in 2016.
