The situation began to turn around, however, after SBC bought Metromedia Inc.'s cellular and paging business in 1987.
In 1989 SBC's cellular business began to be profitable, while its larger competitors were still showing losses.

Under the Telecommunications Act of 1996, SBC was looking forward to entering the long-distance market.
In December 1997 SBC sold Pacific Bell Video Services, the digital wireless cable operation it had acquired as part of PacTel.
