    The Data Analyst Intern will be assigned to the Prevention and Response Branch (PRB) to support the National Park Service (NPS) Office of Health and Safety (OHS) with safety priorities, including analyzing various data sets to identify disease and injury trends in national parks; causal and contributing factors to diseases and injuries, high risk populations, and location specific information to target and improve safety and health efforts across the NPS. The intern will be responsible for developing data rules, performing data clean-up and coding, conducting data analysis of various size data sets, and generating various outputs (reports, dashboards, etc.) to inform programs, parks, and staff on trends. The intern will be responsible for developing presentations and conducting briefings on analysis results to program managers in the OHS. The intern will also have the opportunity to support various public health initiatives within the Prevention and Response Branch to include developing and updating relevant and engaging safety and health content on NPS.gov, NPS social media, and InsideNPS. The intern will have the opportunity to collaborate with the OHS Division Chief and Branch Chiefs, safety professionals, public health professionals, communications staff and other subject matter experts across the NPS. In addition to building upon data analysis and reporting skills, the intern will have the opportunity to learn project management, communication planning, policy and guidance development, and creating public health related training for adult audiences. Location Washington, DC Schedule January 12, 2026 - January 8, 2027 Key Duties and Responsibilities Project Management: Apply project management principles in defining and scoping work tasks, developing schedules, conducting stakeholder analysis to provide targeted project deliverables Data Collection: Gather data from internal systems, surveys, APIs, or other available data sources Data Cleaning & Preparation: Identify and correct errors, remove duplicates, and format data for analysis Data Analysis: Use statistical methods and tools (e.g., Excel, PowerBI, Power Query, or R) to uncover trends, patterns, and correlations Reporting & Visualization: Create charts, dashboards, and reports using tools like Power BI, Excel, or Word to present findings clearly Communication and Collaboration: Use effective oral and written methods to convey information in a professional setting to successfully collaborate with co-workers and colleagues to understand their data needs and provide insights Documentation: Record methodologies, data sources, and findings for transparency and reproducibility Data Management: Maintain and update data files to ensure data integrity and accessibility Quality Assurance: Conduct regular audits to ensure data accuracy and consistency Process Improvement: Recommend ways to improve data collection, storage, and analysis workflows Meeting Management: Prepares meeting invitations, agendas, lead coordination meetings for assignments/projects, and prepare summary meeting minutes Literature review: conduct literature reviews on infectious diseases and public health prevention and control measures. Required Qualifications A 1-2 page resume Recent graduate with a minimum of a master's degree in public health or data science specializing in data analytics or epidemiology Expert in using Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word Experience in conducting public health research, developing methodologies for collecting and analyzing quantitative or qualitative data Experience in conducting comprehensive literature reviews, preparing citations and translating findings into informational documents, technical papers Experience in managing and analyzing data sets for technical reports or research Ability to work independently with some oversights to effectively plan and manage tasks as assigned, and to complete tasks as expected by the deadline Ability to work in a team environment, collaborating on common tasks and resolving conflicts Ability to effectively work in a virtual remote environment, completing assignments on time Skill in written and verbal presentations of technical material to make complex studies understandable to persons not trained in epidemiology or statistics Ability to establish and maintain interpersonal relationships with individuals and groups from different backgrounds, technical expertise, and interests Ability to anticipate, recognize, and analyze problems and to make effective decisions, develop alternatives and communicate to supervisor when needed This SCA Position is authorized under the Public Land Corps Authority.     SCHEUDLE Training Dates: 03/30/2026 to 05/26/2026 Leader Training: 03/30/2026 - 05/03/2026 Leader and Member Combined Training and USFS Guard School: 05/04/2026 - 05/26/2026 Service with team will then go until 10/31/2026 OVERVIEW The U.S. Forest Service (USFS)/Student Conservation Association (SCA) Wildland Fire Academy is an intense fuels reduction training program designed to introduce Field Leaders and Members to the rigors of the Fire & Fuel Programs across the USFS. During the program, Leaders and Members will train, live, and work as a cohesive and dynamic crew on fuels mitigation and fuels reduction projects. Leaders and their crew will be assigned to districts identified as Healthy Forest Restoration Act Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) Lands to learn how different National Forests handle the challenges of wildfire mitigation in their respective ecosystems. The season begins with a rigorous 7-week paid training period that includes a robust introduction into leading for the Student Conservation Association, Wilderness First Responder (WFR), several certification courses in route to obtain a federally recognized fire qualifications card with the USFS and your Intermediate (Level B) Chainsaw Card. Some online coursework will need to be completed before the 03/30/2026 start date. Throughout the season, Leaders will mentor a team of four Members through fuels reduction and other conservation or restoration projects, while supporting positive group dynamics, and individuals' personal and professional development. Some projects will require long daily commutes, or traveling long distances between project sites. Teams may live without electricity, running water, and/or cell phone reception for extended periods of time. This is NOT an entry-level position. Previous experience using chainsaws, as well as working and/or leading in the role of Firefighter Type 2 (FFT2) is required. Firefighter Type 1 qualification is preferred, but not required for this position. The primary objective for this program is fuels reduction, not fire suppression. Prescribed burns are condition-dependent opportunities, and will often require an extended and flexible work schedule from the team as identified by the partner agency. Prescribed burns and wildfire suppression opportunities are possible, but cannot be guaranteed. Throughout the season, Field Leaders play an important role in maintaining professional working relationships with land management agency partners, and will NOT have the opportunity to engage in Administratively Determined (AD) status with the U.S. Forest Service, with the exception of local, on-district Initial Attacks. Every leader is expected to engage in daily tasks to achieve mission and project goals as assigned by USFS personnel. Communication is key to success and each leader has their own responsibility to continually develop themselves with positive communication strategies, while advocating for safety, wellness, and crew development throughout the season. Leader Responsibilities: Monitoring completion of project tasks as assigned; whether it is using a chainsaw, piling brush into burn piles, working with your team to move a large rock, or doing dishes. Full engagement is expected in all work projects and community activities. Serve as a mentor for Members by guiding team dynamics, establishing healthy group norms, and providing support for Members' personal and professional development through routine check-ins and performance evaluations. Assist the team with meal planning, developing emergency response plans, and completing logistical tasks such as route planning and fuel monitoring. Recording work totals and creating reports for SCA and agency partners. Leader Qualifications: Commitment to living and working within an intensive crew environment, often in a shared space. Desire to do manual labor in all weather conditions, including wind, rain, extreme heat, extreme cold, and extremely pleasant days. Minimum of 1 (One) year of previous chainsaw operation experience at the A-Feller Lever. Minimum of a FFT2 (Firefighter Type 2) qualified, FFT1 preferred.     Program Dates: 05/04/26 - 10/23/26 The U.S. Forest Service (USFS)/ Student Conservation Association (SCA) Wildland Fire Academy is an intense Fuels Reduction Training program designed to introduce leaders and members to the rigors of the Fire & Fuel Programs across the USFS. During the program, Leaders and Members will train, live, and work as a cohesive and dynamic crew on fuels mitigation and fuels reduction projects. Members will work on a team that consists of one Leader and four Members, serving on an assigned USFS district identified as Healthy Forest Restoration Act Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) Lands to learn how different National Forests handle the challenges of wildfire mitigation in their respective ecosystems. This is an entry-level position. Previous experience using chainsaws and working outdoors is not needed, just the passion to learn. The season begins with a rigorous 3-week training period that includes a robust introduction into the Student Conservation Association Values, Mission, Policies, Wellness Strategies, and introductions into crew dynamics and building and maintaining positive and inclusive communities. You will also receive Wilderness First Aid (WFA), several certification courses in route to obtain a federally recognized fire qualifications card with the USFS and your Beginner (Level A) Chainsaw Bucking and/or Felling Card. During the Field Season, teams will work with USFS staff on fuels reduction and other conservation and restoration projects. Some projects will require long daily commutes or traveling long distances between project sites, and Members may live without electricity, running water, WiFi, and/or cell phone reception for significant lengths of time. The primary objective for this program is fuels reduction, not fire suppression. Prescribed burns are condition-dependent opportunities, and will often require an extended and flexible work schedule from the team as identified by the partner agency. Prescribed burns and wildfire suppression opportunities are possible, but cannot be guaranteed. Any fire suppression opportunities will require the member to be placed in Administratively Determined (AD) status with the U.S. Forest Service. During this time, members are placed on a service interruption with SCA, and become employees of the USFS. Work schedules in AD status may require 12+ hour days and extended time camping. Each member is expected to engage in daily tasks to achieve mission and project goals as assigned by USFS personnel and SCA Staff. Communication is key to success and each member has their own responsibility to continually develop themselves with positive personal communication strategies. Schedule Training Dates: 05/04/2026 to 05/26/2026 Field Season: 05/27/26 to 10/23/26 Work Locations: TBD. Possible work site locations can be located within districts identified as Healthy Forest Restoration Act Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) Lands located across 10 states in Western US; Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexica, Oregon, Utah, and Washington. Key Duties and Responsibilities: Assisting with monitoring completion of project tasks as assigned; whether it is using a chainsaw, piling brush into burn piles, working with your team to move a large rock, or doing dishes. Full engagement is expected in all work projects and community activities, both on and off duty. Assist the team with meal planning, chores, developing emergency response plans, and completing logistical tasks. Recording work totals and creating reports for agency partners. Interfacing with general public and partner organizations in a manner that reflects positively upon the crew, organization, and agency. Participating in daily workflow, group physical fitness activities, and arduous daily tasks, speaking up when something is not right, and maintaining a solution-focused mindset to achieve crew objectives. Members may be expected to participate in team building and team support activities that occur outside of standard work hours. Assisting with projects in conservation, recreation, campground maintenance, and other USFS needs. If eligible, may drive the SCA vehicle for team support.
