Schnucks company history timeline

1939

Schnuck Markets, Inc. was founded in St Louis in 1939.

1947

By 1947, the families had opened seven retail grocery stores among them.

1952

In 1952, Edwin and his two sons incorporated as Schnuck Markets, Inc.

1961

In 1961, Schnucks adopted the slogan “The Friendliest Stores In Town” to highlight what our customers felt was our primary strength.

1968

The Schnucks symbol, a soldier, was introduced in 1968 (during the Vietnam War). Schnucks continued to grow, adopting the motto "Friendliest Stores In Town" and acquiring stores in Illinois, Indiana, Tennessee, Mississippi, Missouri, Iowa, and Wisconsin.

1970

1970 was a year of growth! Schnucks opened a new grocery warehouse facility with the capacity to handle future growth.

1995

Schnucks underwent a major expansion in 1995 when it purchased from Loblaws the National Supermarkets chain (a total of 57 stores), also based in St Louis.

2002

In 2002, Schnucks agreed to buy 12 Seessel's stores in the Memphis, Tennessee area, from Albertsons, Inc.

2005

In 2005, Schnucks opened the first Iowa store, in Bettendorf, offering savings, service and selection to the Quad Cities community.

2008

In 2008, Schnucks acquired grocery store Hart Food and Drug in O'Fallon, IL making it the fifth Schnucks in St Clair County.

2009

In August 2009, Schnucks opened a store in downtown St Louis.

2011

Schnucks operated these stores until September 2011.

2018

On September 18, 2018, it was announced that SuperValu would sell 19 of its Shop 'n Save locations to Schnucks.

2020

In 2020, Schnucks opened another prototype store, named "EatWell - A Natural Food Store by Schnucks", located in a former Lucky's Market off Providence Road in Columbia, Missouri near the campus of the University of Missouri.
