Statement of Duties: Obeys traffic laws. Observes all mandatory safety regulations for school buses. Maintains discipline when students are on bus. Reports undisciplined students to the proper authority. Keeps assigned bus clean. Keeps to assigned schedule. Checks bus before each operation for mechanical defects. Notifies the proper authority in case of mechanical failure or lateness. Discharges students only at authorized stops. Exercises responsible leadership when on out-of-district school trips. Transports only authorized students. Reports all accidents and completes required reports. Enforces regulations against smoking and eating on the bus. Performs all duties as indicated by the Superintendent of Schools or his/her designees and the policies of the Haverhill School Committee. Qualifications: Valid 7D License Demonstrate qualities of neatness/cleanliness. The bus driver must be familiar with Greater Lawrence streets and will drive the school bus in accordance with all local and State regulations and requirements. The bus driver will make a priority to have a safe and educational ride. Essential Functions/Key Responsibilities: Transports children to and from school and follows a planned route on a time schedule. Picks up children along scheduled routes at the same time every day. Transports children on fieldtrips and/or to other activities. Maintains a basic routine check of bus fluids and lights including regular refueling and cleaning of assigned vehicle and performing daily pre-trips. Notifies manager of vehicle repair or maintenance needs, maintains a monthly log of any maintenance done to vehicles and submits monthly logs to manager. Assists with delivery of program supplies, materials, mail, etc. as assigned. Willing to learn how to operate and use all office equipment. Participates in keeping a safe and happy environment for children on the bus. Assists with other cross-component duties as assigned by Manager. Skills & Qualifications: Valid Massachusetts CDL with Passenger and School bus endorsement. Must have the ability to maintain a positive relationship with parents, children, and co-workers. Must be punctual and reliable. Must have some flexibility when an emergency arises. Bilingual English/Spanish. Show documented proof of current Department of Transportation medical card and School Bus certificate card, negative TB test, and proof of MMR immunity. (Hepatitis B immunity is advisable.) Must have a suitable CORI, SORI, & DCF background check on file prior to employment. Pre-employment Drug/Alcohol test required. Must obtain First Aid & CPR certificate upon hire. Supervisory Responsibility: None Travel: Is required for training and visits to other locations. Posting: Bus Monitor Work Year: School Year NATURE OF WORK: Hours of work are 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. M,W,Th, F and 6:30am to 8:30am and 12:30pm to 2:30pm on Tuesdays or early release days Work involves assisting the bus driver in maintaining order on the bus, and assuring the safety of the children while entering, riding, and departing from the bus. The bus monitor is subordinate to the bus driver and takes direction from the bus driver. Training and technical assistance is provided by the Transportation department. QUALIFICATIONS: The Bus Monitor should possess a consistent demonstration of effective interpersonal relationship skills, which will enable him/her to interact in a professional manner with children, parents and staff. Experience working with children At least a high school diploma required. Additional education or training is preferred. PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: Assists children in getting on the bus and to assigned seats. Ensures all passengers are properly restrained while riding the bus. Maintains order and behavior of children on the bus so the driver will not be distracted. Maintains a safe environment for all students while on the bus. Maintains a positive, calm attitude and a soft voice while on the job. Assists the children in getting off the bus safely. Releases children only to persons listed on the Child Release Form, and requires identification from any unknown or new person on the list. Notifies the receiving school staff of concerns regarding a child's health, behavior, or emotional state. Learns bus route and makes the substitute driver aware of it when necessary. Maintains a list on board the bus of all children authorized by the director to ride the bus, and indicates daily the children actually riding the bus and to whom each child is released Reports all unscheduled absences to the director of transportation. Checks the bus to assure there are no children remaining on the bus at the end of each route. SALARY/BENEFITS: $18.75.00 per hour.
