ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: * Operate bus and all related equipment in a safe and efficient manner, obeying all traffic laws and in accordance with the policies and procedures of the department. * Provide a safe and positive riding experience for all students assigned to your bus. * Immediately report involvement in any collision, incident or job-related injury before the completion of your assigned shift through prescribed guidelines and procedures. * Immediately report mechanical problems, damage to bus (interior and exterior) and perform pre-trip/post-trip inspections through prescribed guidelines and procedures. * Keep interior of bus clean/neat and maintain appropriate level of fuel as stated in department policy. * Maintain effective behavior management over groups of children. * Establish and maintain good rapport with students, parents, school personnel and coworkers. * Load and unload students from the bus following prescribed guidelines and procedures. * Must perform emergency evacuation of students on bus if needed: walking to rear of bus, exiting the rear door and/or lifting students in emergency situations. * Must attend in-service, required trainings, and safety meetings as required by the department. Must complete required online compliance and cybersecurity trainings as required. * Must maintain accurate, updated records turned in at a timely manner, as required. * Must check mailbox and email on a regular basis. * Regular and reliable attendance is an essential job function. * Perform other duties as assigned. WORKING CONDITIONS: 1. Requires performing tasks such as sitting, twisting and bending. 2. Work positions include kneeling and climbing, with extended reach above head (12 inches) and extended reach in front of body (14 inches). 3. Load and unload vehicle, lifting and pulling up to 20 pounds on hand device while operating the service door, opening and closing 15-60 times per shift. 4. Operate the vehicle in all climatic conditions. 5. Operate the vehicle up to 7 1/2 hours per day on established routes. 6. Climb in and out of bus, through service door, 5-15 times per shift. 7. Physical ability to enter and exit the bus through the emergency exits. 8. Drive in reverse (as dictated by circumstances) which requires twisting the upper body and neck while driving. 9. Must be able to pass a mandatory Department of Transportation Physical which includes the following: * Diabetes - have no established medical history or clinical diagnosis of diabetes Mellitus currently requiring insulin for control * Hypertension - Blood pressure maximum 160/90 * Vision - have distant visual acuity of at least 20/40 (Snellen) in each eye with or without corrective lenses or visual acuity separately corrected to 20/40 (Snellen) or better with corrective lenses, field of vision of at least 70 degrees in the horizontal meridian in each eye and the ability to recognize the colors of traffic signals and devices showing standard red, green and amber. * First perceive a forced whispered voice in the better ear not less than 5 feet with or without the use of a hearing aid, or if tested by use of an audiometric device, does not have an average hearing loss in the better ear greater than 40 decibels at 500 Hz, 1,000 Hz and 2,000 Hz with or without a hearing aid when the audiometric device is calibrated to American National Standard (formerly ASA Standard) Z24.5-1951.     Days Per Year: 180 MIN: $19.50 MID: $25.66 JOB TITLE: Bus Driver Transportation Department REPORTS TO: Director of Transportation Transportation Supervisors Lead Driver WAGE/HOUR STATUS: Nonexempt PAY GRADE: Trans 2 PRIMARY PURPOSE: A Bus Driver is responsible for safely driving students to and from school on a schedule assigned by the Director of Transportation. All employees of SISD are expected to act with integrity, support organizational goals, communicate in a clear and respectful manner, championing the needs of our students and drive continuous improvement. QUALIFICATIONS: Required: * Minimum 18 years of age * Valid Texas commercial driver's license (Class B) * State Bus Driver's Certification course * Successful completion of behind-the-wheel training course and discipline management procedures Preferred: * High School Diploma or GED from an accredited school SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS: * Commercial Driver License - Class A or B with the (P) Passenger and (S) School Bus endorsements plus 2 years experience driving an automobile * Acceptable motor vehicle record and criminal history * Must pass an annual physical examination by designated health professional and paid for by the District. * Have an interest in and liking for children and young adults. * Possess mental maturity and emotional stability to operate a school bus safely despite distractions from sometimes loud and boisterous students. * Must have the ability to understand verbal and written instructions in English MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES: * Drive students to and from school safely. * Abide by the time schedule of assigned route(s). * Obey all traffic laws and department policies. * Maintain student discipline on the bus in a positive and caring manner. Work with school administrators to resolve cases of misbehavior. * Load and unload students as required to maintain daily schedule using hand operated door mechanism. * Be able to perform emergency bus evacuation of students on bus. Walk to the rear of bus, exit the rear door, and/or lifting students in emergency situation. * Maintain current route maps and folders. It is the driver's responsibility to maintain current folder schedule time and have all changes approved by the supervisor. * Maintain seating charts for elementary and middle school students. * Maintain clean bus interior. * Maintain appropriate level of fuel. * Administer basic first aid as trained when necessary. * Is responsible for being at work on time every day. * Communicate clearly WORKING CONDITIONS: The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: physical mobility, prolonged sitting, repetitive hand and arm motions, some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling. This position will also require traveling within the district. Mental demands: Maintain emotional control, ability to effectively communicate in both oral and written in English for safety reasons. Environmental Conditions: Work outside and inside; moderate exposure to extreme temperature (hot and cold) and vehicle fumes.
