The School Bus Driver is responsible for the safe transportation of students to and from school, field trips, and other school-related events. The driver ensures that the vehicle is operated safely, maintains order and discipline among passengers, and upholds the values and mission of the Catholic school community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Transport students to and from school and school-approved activities in a safe and timely manner.
Adhere to all traffic laws, safety regulations, and school policies.
Maintain appropriate behavior and discipline among students during transport, reporting any issues to school administration.
Conduct pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections and report any mechanical issues promptly.
Ensure that the bus is clean and presentable at all times.
Maintain accurate records of mileage, routes, inspections, and incidents to ensure compliance and accountability.
Assist students in boarding and exiting the bus as needed.
Communicate effectively and respectfully with students, parents, and school staff.
Report any accidents, injuries, or safety concerns to the appropriate authorities immediately.
Attend required training sessions, safety workshops, and school meetings as scheduled.
Promote and model respectful, Christian behavior and support the mission of Catholic education.
Working Conditions:
Must be able to sit for extended periods and operate a vehicle in a variety of weather conditions.
Must be available to work split shifts (morning and afternoon) and occasional evenings or weekends for special events.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to lift to 25 pounds occasionally.
Adequate vision and hearing are essential for operating a bus safely.
Ability to step up and down from bus steps and assist students as needed.
Additional Requirements:
Completion of diocesan Safe Environment training.

Muscatine Schools is hiring a Bus Driver for the Transportation Department. AM routes vary, but may begin any time between 6:45am-7:00am and end around 8:30am. PM routes also vary and may begin between 2:30pm-3:00pm and end around 5:00pm. A School Bus Driver's main responsibility is safe and efficient transportation of students to and from school and related activities.
Daily Drivers have the opportunity to drive hourly midday routes in addition to their daily routes. Bus Drivers are assigned to work during the school year (9 months/year) but may have the opportunity to drive during the summer for summer programs and related activities. Daily Bus Drivers are paid a rate of $120.00/day. Midday routes are paid on an hourly basis starting at $30.00/hour.
The candidate chosen for hire will need to complete a background check, pre-employment drug screen and have passed/completed all DOT school bus driver requirements and hold all applicable licensing/certifications. Onboarding and training is required through the HR Department prior to working as a Bus Driver with Muscatine Schools.

Normal Work Day Begins: Varies by route or trip
OBJECTIVE:
To provide students with safe and efficient transportation to and from school, including related activities.
MAJOR DUTIES:
Drive the routes and or trips as assigned without deviation(s) unless authorized to do so or because of a specific emergency, allowing common sense to dictate otherwise for that specific incident.
Works with a variety of students, parents, guardians and school personnel.
Maintain discipline and control on the bus at stops, transfer stations and while in operation; this includes the Muscatine School Discipline Program.
Maintain assigned bus by completing daily inspections and other pre-trip duties, notifying mechanics of any and all mechanical problems.
Maintain driver records such as time cards, physicals, school permits.
Monitor radio and provide radio communication as needed.
May meet with the Special Education teachers to review a student's disabilities and how the Driver might better meet the student's needs as well as improve behavior on the bus.
Other duties of a similar nature to be assigned as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Must meet State and Federal DOT requirements plus additional training required by the Muscatine School District for regular education or special education route drivers; CDL, bus permit, valid physical, alcohol and drug screens as required by applicable federal or state regulations. Completion of a criminal background check including child and dependent adult abuse registry check. Physical and chauffeurs license and state permit. Computer skills useful for maintaining routing and student database computer systems. Bilingual preferred or highly desirable. Qualified candidates are required to have a high school diploma or GED.
Knowledge, skills and abilities required to carry out the job satisfactorily.

* Responsible for refueling the bus at the end of the day.

* Responsible for the weekly cleaning and upkeep of buses and shelters, which may include working on an occasional Saturday based on the needs of the department.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
* Requires a level of knowledge normally acquired through the successful completion of high school or a GED equivalency.
* Requires a minimum of six (6) months experience in the operation of a vehicle on public thoroughfares.
* The successful candidate must possess, and maintain throughout the duration of employment, a valid Class C Commercial Driver's License (CDL), with passenger endorsement. This is a safety sensitive position and all CDL personnel are subject to Federal Transit Authority Random Drug & Alcohol Testing Program.

Generally, hours worked will not exceed twenty-nine (29) hours per week but would not be lower than twenty (20) hours. From time to time, additional morning shifts may be offered depending on the availability and scheduling needs of the department.
