JOB DESCRIPTION
School Bus Driver QUALIFICATIONS:
Ability to work with children.
Of good character and emotional stability that includes patience, considerateness, even temperament and calmness under stress.
CDL license with proper endorsements including: Air brake (Class A or B CDL) Passenger (P) School Bus (S)
An acceptable motor vehicle record (MVR).
No questionable activity revealed in a background check.
Operate a wheelchair lift (if applicable).
Effectively assist children in evacuating in an emergency.
Have a quick reaction time from throttle (accelerator) to brake.
Repeatedly open and close a manually operated bus entrance door. Possibly as much as 200 times a day.
Operate hand controls simultaneously and quickly while the bus is in motion (this includes turn signal levers, switches, and door controls).
Exit quickly, oneself and students, from an emergency exit door (either rear or side emergency door). The driver must be able to get themselves from the floor surface of the bus, which is approximately 40 inches above the ground, to the ground without the assistance of steps or rungs.
The ability to potentially evacuate or move an incapacitated student in a school bus emergency.
REPORTS TO: Director of Transportation
LENGTH OF SERVICE: Up to 183 days
POSITION GOAL: To transport students safely to and from school, and to make the experience a positive one.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Operates the school bus and other school vehicles in a safe and orderly manner in accordance with all State and Federal regulations and school board policies.
Maintains a safe, orderly, and pleasant environment on the bus and displays a positive attitude toward the children.
Completes a pre-trip and post-trip inspection of the bus daily, and reports any deficiencies or needed repairs to the Maintenance Technician. Also, reports to the Maintenance Technician when scheduled maintenance is due.
Cleans the interior of the bus after each trip, or as needed. Assists in maintaining a clean exterior of the bus, as needed, to facilitate proper driver visibility while driving.
Works with parents regarding disciplinary problems on the bus, completes bus conduct reports when repeated behavior problems arise or serious violations of the rules have occurred.
Attends driver meetings when called.
Maintains a current DOT Medical Examiner's Certificate. Have the ability to assist passengers in the evacuation of the school bus, operate all safety equipment and bus safety features, and have sufficient physical capacity to render assistance to passengers in case of illness or injury.
Performs other duties as may be assigned by the Director of Transportation.
Follows directions/instructions and gets along with co-workers and supervisors.
Attends work regularly and on time.

Muscatine Schools is hiring a Bus Driver for the Transportation Department. AM routes vary, but may begin any time between 6:45am-7:00am and end around 8:30am. PM routes also vary and may begin between 2:30pm-3:00pm and end around 5:00pm. A School Bus Driver's main responsibility is safe and efficient transportation of students to and from school and related activities.
Daily Drivers have the opportunity to drive hourly midday routes in addition to their daily routes. Bus Drivers are assigned to work during the school year (9 months/year) but may have the opportunity to drive during the summer for summer programs and related activities. Daily Bus Drivers are paid a rate of $120.00/day. Midday routes are paid on an hourly basis starting at $30.00/hour.
The candidate chosen for hire will need to complete a background check, pre-employment drug screen and have passed/completed all DOT school bus driver requirements and hold all applicable licensing/certifications. Onboarding and training is required through the HR Department prior to working as a Bus Driver with Muscatine Schools.

OBJECTIVE:
To provide students with safe and efficient transportation to and from school, including related activities.
MAJOR DUTIES:
Drive the routes and or trips as assigned without deviation(s) unless authorized to do so or because of a specific emergency, allowing common sense to dictate otherwise for that specific incident.
Works with a variety of students, parents, guardians and school personnel.
Maintain discipline and control on the bus at stops, transfer stations and while in operation; this includes the Muscatine School Discipline Program.
Maintain assigned bus by completing daily inspections and other pre-trip duties, notifying mechanics of any and all mechanical problems.
Maintain driver records such as time cards, physicals, school permits.
Monitor radio and provide radio communication as needed.
May meet with the Special Education teachers to review a student's disabilities and how the Driver might better meet the student's needs as well as improve behavior on the bus.
Other duties of a similar nature to be assigned as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Must meet State and Federal DOT requirements plus additional training required by the Muscatine School District for regular education or special education route drivers; CDL, bus permit, valid physical, alcohol and drug screens as required by applicable federal or state regulations. POSITION TITLE: Bus Driver
FLSA: Hourly, Non-Exempt
REPORTS TO: Transportation Director
Basic Duties (not all inclusive):
Completes the required pre-trip/route and post-trip/route inspections.
Completes the assigned route/trip on a safe, but timely basis.
Operates the bus and related vehicle equipment in a safe, efficient and legal manner.
Confronts emergency situations in accordance with safety-standard operational procedures.
Works with bus monitor to see all students are following the rules of the bus.
Qualifications: No experience needed. Must be able to pass DOT physical including a drug screen. Must have or be able
to obtain a Commercial Driver's License- Class B with passenger and school bus endorsements. Must have or be able to obtain a School Bus Driver Authorization Card from the State of Iowa. The district will provide paid training to assist in obtaining these necessary qualifications. Consistent attendance necessary.
Hours/Schedule: The position is guaranteed 5 hours of pay per day. 2.5 in the morning and 2.5 in the afternoon. The actual time worked may vary for either the morning or afternoon. This position is expected to work all days students are in session and need transportation to and from school. That is usually 177 student days. Typically, student days are the only days you will need to be in attendance but there are transportation meetings, trainings, etc. that may require you to come in outside of your normally scheduled hours. These would be paid unless told otherwise.
Rate of pay: The hourly rate of pay starts at $16.55 for those that do not have both their CDL and department of education requirements. There is a potential to make more based off of a few things. Your past driving experience ($0.10-$0.20 more per hour maxed at 5 years' experience), Current CDL ($0.75 per hour), all department of education requirements met ($0.75 per hour). You do not have to have your CDL or all department of education requirements in order to be a Bus Driver, we will train you and help you get these. A permit is required before we are able to hire anyone. Your starting rate will be determined by the Business Office/HR after submitting your application and current qualifications.
Benefits: Since this is a part-time, school-year position, it is not eligible for health and dental benefits however, it does qualify for a $20,000 life insurance policy at no cost to you. You also are enrolled from day one, in the state sponsored retirement program, IPERS. The District contributes 9.44% of your wages to this. IPERS requires that you would contribute 6.29% of your wages.
Paid Leave: The District has both paid sick leave and paid personal leave. As an employee of the District you are given 2 personal days to use throughout the school year. You are given sick leave based on the number of years you are with the District; your first year you are given 10 days, pro-rated for the month that you start employment. This position is not eligible for paid vacation leave.
Paid Holidays: This position is paid for 5 holidays throughout the school year. Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, New Year's Day and Memorial Day.
