ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Either Service
Readies and inspects vehicles, including safety items, cleanliness and general appearance, at launch and throughout the day in order to insure safe and efficient operation of equipment. Reports any equipment defects as prescribed by WTA policy and procedures.
Operates two-way radio for professional routine communication with dispatch center and other vehicles as well as to report accidents, emergencies, or other unusual situations related to equipment and / or passengers.
Responsible for proper securement of passengers and mobility devices, and safe evacuation of passengers in any emergency situation.
Assures compliance with WTA's fare policy and collects ridership information.
Promotes good passenger relations through courteous treatment of passengers and providing information regarding system operations.
Completes and submits timecards, incident reports, and other information requested by the WTA.
Returns and secures vehicle at WTA yard in accordance with established procedures.
Must be willing to work day, evening, split shifts, and weekends.

Paratransit Service
Operates a paratransit vehicle providing demand-responsive service to persons with disabilities and the general public on assigned routes and schedules.

Uses computer technology for passenger, route and schedule record-keeping and information.
Fixed-Route Service
Operates a passenger coach on prescribed routes and time schedules in accordance with established safety and operational policies and procedures while picking up and delivering passengers at regular stops.
Assists passengers boarding and disembarking from vehicles, as required by the Americans with Disabilities Act and WTA policy as they apply to fixed-route service.
Always interacts with other assigned persons when relieving or being relieved on shift.
Maintains continual attendance at coach, except for scheduled breaks, to ensure the security and safety of both the coach and passengers, the maintenance of radio contact with dispatch and other drivers, and to provide system information to inquiring passengers in the terminal.

Job Summary:
South Kitsap School District provides paid training for eligible bus driver candidates hired first as Substitute Bus Driver trainees. Substitute Bus Driver trainees are hired as temporary employees while completing an in-house 4-to-6-week training (training minimum of 30-40 hours) to obtain a CDL Class B, passenger endorsement, airbrakes, and school bus endorsement (valued over $4,000). Upon completion of training, the trainee may be offered an ongoing position as a regular or substitute bus driver. South Kitsap School District hires its continuing bus driver positions from its substitute bus driver pool.
Within the role of a Substitute Bus Driver, you will have the opportunity to make a positive difference in the lives of children while being part of a wonder, supportive team. The substitute bus driver will fill in for absent employees as needed. The duties will be to safely transport student to and from school and school-sponsored activities. Most work hours are approximately 5:45am - 9:30am and 1:30pm-5:00pm. The hours vary greatly according to the assignment.
Drivers may be asked to drive at any time of the day. Must be cognizant of and obey all state RCW's and WAC's as they apply to school bus driving. * Transports students to district-approved extracurricular activities, field trips, and other activity trips as assigned; enforces discipline rules; accounts for students and ensures that time schedules are met.
* Maintains records; completes forms and prepares reports as required by state or school district policies.
* Successfully completes state or school district bus driver training programs and courses and maintains appropriate certification(s) and licenses.

Responsibilities and Duties
Drive Bus for morning/afternoon routes, Monday-Friday 6:30 to 8:30am and then again 3:15pm to 5:15 pm with a guarantee of 4 hours each day plus more if required.
Drive the bus on an as-needed basis for activities.
Keep daily attendance records of students transported on the bus and safely transport passengers.

Must follow assigned route schedules, keep route up to date with dispatcher's help and maintain student discipline procedures and training. Substitutes assist in maintaining equipment by keeping bus interior clean and reporting vehicle service in accordance with established procedure; be willing to be called upon to serve in the event of a disaster and perform other duties as may be assigned; drive a variety of school buses and drive regardless of the weather. The work requires exposure to traffic and some bending, stooping, lifting and stretching. The employee remains seated while driving and work requires visual acuity and concentration to ensure the safe operation of school buses. Substitute bus drivers may be placed into permanent positions as they become available.
Qualifications:
* Must be 21 years of age; have less than 3 moving violations within the last 5 years; be in good health and willing to submit to a drug test.
* Have or be willing to acquire valid Washington State CDL license.
* Meet all state and district health and agility requirements; and meet all DOT, state, and district requirements for physical condition, criminal history records and drug and alcohol testing.
* Must keep state and district certifications current.
* Must have a high school diploma or GED and successfully complete the district bus driver training.
* Experience driving large vehicle is helpful.
* Any equivalent combination of education, experience and training that would provide the applicant with the desired knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the work would be an asset.
* Must have knowledge of traffic laws and safe school bus operating standards and procedures and the ability to operate a school bus safely.
* Must have ability to maintain order on a school bus.
* Must have ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with a variety of students and co-workers.
* Must have good communications skills and strong customer service skills.

Work Environment:
The work environment characteristics described are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The employee is required to deal with distraught and/or angry persons and is exposed to infectious diseases carried by children.
