Driving and Safe Bus Operations * Adheres to established routes and keeps to assigned time schedule. * Transports only authorized pupils and ensures that all students have left the bus at the end of the route. * Completes training on, and as required, implements accommodations when transporting students with disabilities. * Assist disabled children and others out of and into vehicles when there is no bus attendant assigned. * Obeys all traffic laws and observes mandatory school bus safety regulations. * Reports all accidents and pupil injuries immediately to the Athletic Director, School Principal, and the School Business Administrator and completes required reports. * If ticketed as a result of an accident or traffic stop by police, the bus driver will pay any fines and court costs and will attend driving safety classes if so ordered by the municipal court judge. * Will not use a cell phone while the bus is turned on or in gear, either to receive calls or to make calls. Cell phone operation on a moving vehicle is a distraction and a safety hazard. Cell phone operation by a bus driver is only permitted if the bus is parked or at the roadside curb with the engine turned off and the bus out-of-gear. * Performs interior bus cleaning duties daily, cleans windows and exterior as needed, and refuels the vehicle. * Adhere to safety rules when loading and unloading pupils. Safety, Maintenance, and Inspection Requirements * Conducts a pre-trip and post trip safety inspection of the bus prior to every trip and completes the school bus condition report. * Notifies Athletic Director of any mechanical malfunctions and/or safety hazards. * Performs light maintenance (check and replace water, antifreeze, oil, and battery water; add air to tires; replace burned-out bulbs) as necessary. * Participates in emergency evacuation drills in accordance with administrative code and board policy, and instructs passengers regarding safety regulations and other bus rules. * Maintains schedules of work for each bus and ensures that proper supplies are on hand for necessary repairs and for preventative maintenance. Additional Duties * Performs other related tasks as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS: * Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL). * Minimum safe driving experience as determined by the board. * Flexible work schedule (mostly late afternoons and Saturdays). * Sufficient mechanical aptitude to diagnose minor problems and make appropriate repairs. * Ability to maintain passenger discipline to ensure their safety and well-being and protect against vandalism. * Required criminal history background check and proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status. * Current residency in New Jersey, approved residency waiver, or candidate agrees to obtain residency within one year of employment (if a regular employee of the district). * Provide evidence that health is adequate to fulfill the job functions and responsibilities, with reasonable accommodation pursuant to 42 U.S.C. 12101 and in accordance with N.J.A.C. 6:3-4A.4. * Pass the state required Mantoux Intradermal Tuberculin Test as required by N.J.A.C. 6:3-4A.4. Prior to the vehicle moving, the aide will check to see that all clients are wearing their seat belts during transport. 4. Upon greeting clients, check their physical condition and inform the sending facility of any obvious injury or problem. Check to see that clients are properly dressed. Observe if they are wearing shoes, jackets in the winter etc., make sure clients leave the vehicle in the same manner as they boarded. 6. Observe the condition of clients during transport and report any unusual developments to the driver and facility staff. Take measures to preserve and restore calm on the vehicle in cases where clients may be acting out. 8. Never leave clients unattended. Make sure that at least one staff member (driver or aide) is present in the vehicle as long as there are clients on board. In case of emergency notify dispatch immediately to receive instructions. File an incident report when a reportable incident warrants. Check to see that no personal belongings of the client are left on the vehicle. Be courteous and respectful to all clients, fellow staff members, and personnel at the facilities. All aides should report for work in uniform (black or navy blue pants and uniform shirts). Keep vehicle clean inside and outside, including the windows. Check vehicle before leaving the base to be sure the proper tie downs and harnesses are on board. Always maintain a professional image and attitude. Participate in all training programs offered by the company.
