Bus Driver Trainees are hired as a temporary employee while completing the 4-week training to obtain CDL Class B, passenger endorsement, airbrakes, and school bus endorsement. The temporary employee rate is $16.66 per hour, with a training maximum of 200 hours. Upon completion of training, the trainee may be offered a continuing position as a regular or substitute bus driver. The substitute bus driver will fill in for absent employees as needed. The duties will be to safely transport students to and from school and school-sponsored activities. Most work hours are approximately 5:45 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. The hours vary greatly according to the assignment. Drivers may be asked to drive at any time of the day. Must be cognizant of and obey all state RCW's and WAC's as they apply to school bus driving. Must follow assigned route schedules, keep route up to date with dispatcher's help and maintain student discipline procedures and training. Substitutes assist in maintaining equipment by keeping bus interior clean and reporting vehicle service in accordance with established procedure; be willing to be called upon to serve in the event of a disaster and perform other duties as may be assigned; drive a variety of school buses and drive regardless of the weather. The work requires exposure to traffic and some bending, stooping, lifting and stretching. The employee remains seated while driving and work requires visual acuity and concentration to ensure the safe operation of school buses. Substitute bus drivers may be placed into permanent positions as they become available. Qualifications: * Must be 21 years of age; have less than 3 moving violations within the last 5 years; be in good health and willing to submit to a drug test. * Have or be willing to acquire valid Washington State CDL license. * Meet all state and district health and agility requirements; and meet all DOT, state, and district requirements for physical condition, criminal history records and drug and alcohol testing. * Must keep state and district certifications current. * Must have a high school diploma or GED and successfully complete the district bus driver training. * Experience driving large vehicle is helpful. * Any equivalent combination of education, experience and training that would provide the applicant with the desired knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the work would be an asset. * Must have knowledge of traffic laws and safe school bus operating standards and procedures and the ability to operate a school bus safely. * Must have ability to maintain order on a school bus. * Must have ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with a variety of students and co-workers. * Must have good communications skills and strong customer service skills. Transports students and other authorized persons on regular and special program “to and from school” routes and on field, extracurricular, and other extra activity trips as authorized by school district officials Preferred Education and Experience High school graduate or equivalent (GED) Five (5) years of experience as a licensed driver of a passenger vehicle Washington State driver's license; Class B, CDL with appropriate endorsements School bus driver authorization Obtain and maintain CPR and first aid qualifications Special Requirements Valid First Aid/CPR card Successful Washington State Patrol and Federal Bureau of Investigation fingerprint clearance I-9 employment eligibility in compliance with the Immigrations Reform and Control Act HIV/HBV training (obtain within 60 days of hire date - District provided) Human Resources new hire training (obtain within 60 days of hire date - District provided) Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Successfully meet all requirements of Chapter 180-20 (drug, disclosure, fingerprinting) Have an excellent driving record Five year complete school bus abstract Physically able to drive and perform all duties related to school bus driving POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES Adhere to federal and state laws and district regulations, policies, procedures and practices Mandatory reporter for incidents of child abuse, harassment, intimidation, bullying, boundary invasions, fights, substance abuse etc. Abide by employment provisions provided for in the collective bargaining agreement Observe strict confidentiality regarding student information Maintain regular punctual attendance Maintains updated and current route sheet Maintains order on the bus while performing normal driving duties and functions Maintains order and adheres to safety rules when loading and unloading pupils Exercises responsible leadership at all times Install, service, or replace school bus equipment and accessories, including but not limited to, fire extinguishers, highway warning kits, first aid and mess kits, snow chains, etc. Perform required operational and safety inspections of the school bus and all related equipment Clean interior of bus, add fuel when required clean exterior as required Work effectively with a group of students, bused together, of different grade levels, abilities or program placement Legible and accurate completion of forms, records, time sheets, trip requests, route studies, trouble reports, misconduct reports, accident reports and other clerical-type activities as may be required Dress appropriately and wear proper foot protection (WAC 296-24-088) for the job Complies with state laws and local regulations pertaining to operation of school buses Performs related duties which are consistent with this job description and the employee's assignment Checks mailbox, bulletin boards, and doors for messages prior to leaving bus garage Takes direction, and instruction regarding safe driving procedures as required to fulfill functions and responsibilities Operate wheelchair lift and assist students loading and unloading from the school bus (only lift bus) Relate effectively with parents, staff, and public in a multicultural and multiracial community Perform other school bus driver-related duties as directed by local school district policies Adhere to federal and state laws and district regulations, policies, procedures and practices Mandatory reporter for incidents of child abuse, harassment, intimidation, bullying, boundary invasions, fights, substance abuse etc. Abide by employment provisions provided for in the collective bargaining agreement Observe strict confidentiality regarding student information Maintain regular punctual attendance.
