Job Description
TITLE: Bus Driver
SALARY LEVEL: $15.00-$21.25/hour (wage determined by years of experience)
TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: 4+ hours/day, 9 months/year (to include all days school is in session)
*Previous bus driving experience helpful, but not required.
*Paid training and assistance obtaining Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with S&P Endorsement provided.
EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually by the Supervisor of Transportation.
REPORTS TO: Supervisor of Transportation
JOB GOAL: To provide safe and efficient transportation so that students may enjoy the fullest possible advantage from the district's curriculum and extracurricular program.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Obey all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.
2. Practice good public relation policies to be a positive representative of the school system.
3. Maintain discipline when students are on the bus.
4. Report undisciplined students to the proper authority.
5. Keep assigned bus clean and fueled.
6. Keep to assigned schedule.
7. Perform a pre-trip inspection prior to starting the route.
8. Notify the proper authority in case of mechanical failure or lateness.
9. Discharge students only at authorized stops.
10. Exercise responsible leadership when on out-of-district school trips.
11. Transport only authorized students.
12. Report all accidents and complete required reports.
13. Enforce regulations against smoking and eating on the bus.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. High school graduate or equivalent.
2. Hold a valid Kansas Commercial Driver's License (C.D.L. B or A with S & P Endorsements) OR ability to attend training and obtain Kansas Commercial Driver's License
3. Thorough knowledge of traffic laws, bus regulations, district policies, rules, and transportation regulations.
4. Good driving skills.
5. No serious driving violations.
6. Ability to pass a bus driver physical examination.
7. Ability to pass a Medic First Aid Course.
8. Ability to pass a Defensive Driving Course.
9. Ability to maintain good discipline on bus.
10. Ability to get along well with students, patrons, and staff; exercising courtesy and tact.
11. Experience driving a bus preferred.
12. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as are determined to be appropriate and acceptable.
13. Must be 18 years of age or over.
14. Attend and/or watch required safety meetings.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. The amount and kind of climbing required exceeds that required for ordinary locomotion.
2. Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist, requires full use of the lower extremities and back muscles.
3. Kneeling: Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.
4. Crouching: Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.
5. Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
6. Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward.
7. Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, drag, haul or rug objects in a sustained motion.
8. Standing: Particularly for sustained periods of time.
9. Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with fingers and palm.
10. Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.
11. Hearing: Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication.
12. Repetitive motions: Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/ or fingers.
13. Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. The use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time. In an emergency, all bus drivers must be able to assist students in evacuations.
14. Visual Acuity--Mobile Equipment Operators: Required to operate cars, trucks, and buses.
15. The worker is subject to all environmental conditions: Activities occur inside and outside.
16. The worker is subject to noise: There is sufficient noise to cause the worker to shout in order to be heard above the ambient noise level.
17. The worker is subject to hazards: Includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, exposure to high heat or exposure to chemicals.
18. The worker is subject to atmospheric conditions: One or more of the following conditions that affect the respiratory system or the skin: Fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases or poor ventilation.

Auburn-Washburn USD 437 expressly prohibits any form of workplace harassment based on race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, age, genetic information, disability, or veteran status. Improper interference with the ability of Auburn-Washburn USD 437's employees to perform their job duties may result in discipline up to and including discharge.
