Position Summary
The School Bus Driver ensures the safe and efficient transportation of students, parents, and staff to and from school campuses, activities, and field trips. This role involves operating school vehicles, conducting safety inspections, enforcing policies, and representing the school with professionalism and care.
Key Responsibilities
- Safely operate school buses along assigned routes and to events/field trips
- Conduct pre-trip inspections, routine fueling, and maintain clean, safe vehicles
- Escort and instruct children on safety practices; lead annual evacuation drills
- Maintain order and enforce discipline policies respectfully
- Provide first aid and emergency assistance when needed
- Submit required reports and participate in safety meetings, workshops, and training
- Collaborate with other drivers and staff for seamless transportation operations
Qualifications
- Minimum 12 months of school bus driving experience
- At least 25 years of age (insurance requirement)
- Valid CA Class A or B License with P&S endorsements and air brakes
- Valid Special Driver Certificate for type 1 bus, transit, air brakes
- Valid Commercial Driver's Medical Examiner's Certificate
- Valid ARC First Aid & CPR certification
- Clean driving record, with ability to pass all required background checks, TB test, and DOT drug/alcohol testing
- Knowledge of safe driving practices, California Motor Vehicle Code, and school transportation regulations
- Ability to manage time effectively, follow routes, and remain calm in emergencies

The Lead Reentry Coach/Driver performs a wide range of critical functions in support of services available through CORE. As a transportation coordinator, the role has direct responsibility for coordinating operations related to a discrete program or set of services available through CORE, and as a Lead Reentry Coach may be tasked with providing some direct services and with the supervision of a limited number of Reentry Coaches or Peer Navigators as deemed necessary to achieve CORE's objectives. The Transportation Coordinator may be called upon to serve as a “problem solver” for clients or partners to improve access to and the effectiveness of reentry services available through CORE.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Leadership: Support manager with day-to-day operations at their assigned service site, including occasions that include the performance of some administrative activities such as the opening or closing of a CORE service site; staff assistance with providing direct services, especially transportation services, by ensuring their adherence to established service delivery policies and procedures as well as any necessary data collection processes. If assigned with the direct supervision of staff, promote team member skill building and professional development aligned with Rubicon's Core Competencies of coaching, trauma informed care, motivational interviewing, and cultural responsiveness.
Service Provision: Serve as a welcoming, positive, and empathetic point of contact with individuals seeking reentry services from CORE; may be called upon to lead culturally appropriate and receptive workshops, trainings and/or support groups for justice impacted individuals. Take a primary role in the provision of shuttle-based transportation services and in ensuring the availability of other appropriate transportation services. Effectively communicate with staff, including the Office Manager, to ensure team members have access to the tools and information required to provide effective transportation support.
Service Coordination: Support CORE staff with the provision of transportation services, and with understanding of rules, eligibility requirements and limitations of available transportation services. Engage other Rubicon staff in the use of available transportation resources, including coordinating with coaches, ambassadors, and navigators to meet identified transportation needs of CORE Members. Serve as a responsive point-of-contact for external partners looking to leverage or refer individuals to CORE for transportation support. Monitor and ensure the service quality of transportation services through the active monitoring of service provision and appropriate record keeping
Data Management and Record Keeping:. Work with service delivery and Organizational Impact staff to ensure service data is properly collected and entered Rubicon's customized data platform and any other required data systems. Ensure the collection and monitoring of service data related to established goals and objectives of CORE's transportation program. Work with Rubicon's COO to ensure appropriate record keeping is maintained on the fuel levels, maintenance and upkeep of all Rubicon vehicles used in relation to CORE's transportation services.
Outreach and Marketing: Promote the availability of CORE's transportation services withing Rubicon to team co-located with CORE, and externally to partners capable of referring individuals to CORE for transportation support. Develop promotional materials promoting CORE's transportation services and promote their distribution to places likely to reach individuals eligible for the services available - including digital distribution options. Participate in and support CORE's general outreach and engagement activities and campaigns.

CLASS TITLE: Bus Driver Trainer BASIC FUNCTION: Under general supervision, to train new drivers and conduct refresher courses for current drivers; coordinate all driver training and safety programs; maintain all required documentation for the driver training program as dictated by all local, state and federal laws and regulations; follow and implement all school district policies; to provide an in-service training program for bus drivers and other drivers as needed; and to do related work as required. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: Analyze training needs and recommend driver training programs. Evaluate the driving skill and safety practices of bus drivers and give them instructions as necessary. Conduct safety and training classes for bus drivers. Read and explain legislation, which applies to bus drivers. Conduct training sessions for new drivers on bus regulations, state laws, the Motor Vehicle Code and the California Education Code. Conduct classroom and behind the wheel training. Hold required instruction and classes for bus driver certificate renewal. Drive a bus, as needed. Operate all transportation equipment skillfully and safely. Administer driving performance tests to bus drivers. Perform other duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE OF: Safe and efficient driving principles and techniques as they pertain to the operation of school buses. Provisions of the California Motor Vehicle Code and the Education Code applicable to the operation of vehicles in transporting school children. Principles and practices of in-service training, including the learning process Federal, State, local agency, and District rules, regulations, or codes governing transportation operations, traffic laws, and student transportation Record keeping procedures ABILITY TO: Analyze, interpret, and explain regulations, laws, policies, and rules Operate a wide variety of school buses competently Make effective oral and written presentations Analyze work situations to determine training needs Maintain accurate records and prepare correct reports. EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: Three years of experience in traffic and transportation work; a High School Diploma or GED; any combination of training and experience that could likely provide the desired knowledge and abilities A School Bus Driver Certificate. A valid unrestricted California State Department of Education Bus Driver Instructor Certificate. LICENSE & OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Driver's License, Class B with a P endorsement, a California School Bus Driver's Certificate, accompanied by a current medical certificate, first aid card, a School Bus Driver Training Certificate; and the ability to qualify for District vehicle insurance coverage. Primary Function

Supervision
Supervises and evaluates assigned classified staff.
Major Responsibilities
Develops a driver training program for school bus drivers.
Obtains necessary training materials and supplies, makes arrangements for classroom facilities, sets up the training schedule and contacts participants.
Conducts the driver training program as well as individual driving sessions with new trainees.
Reviews the progress of the trainees and determines whether a trainee should be dropped from the programs in conjunction with the coordinator.
Conducts in-service training programs and periodically observes drivers to evaluate their driving performance and route analysis.
Reviews any pertinent new laws and revises the training program accordingly.
Plans and develops special programs on school bus safety and works with school administrative personnel to arrange these presentations; trains driver personnel to present programs.
Screens and evaluates new applicants.
Arranges for school bus driver examinations with California State Highway Patrol officials.
Investigates accidents and prepares reports.
Evaluates the driving performance of personnel who will be driving vehicles in other departments.
Participates in training programs related to driver training.
Maintains a variety of records for the district and the state.
Prepares reports as required.
Operates a school bus over a designated route as needed.
Attends job related meetings and activities specified by the, Transportation Services Coordinator.
Performs additional duties assigned by the, Transportation Services Coordinator, as an adjunct to regular stated duties.
Performs those duties and responsibilities, including supervisory and advisory duties, as may be prescribed by the Superintendent.
Qualifications
Knowledge and Skills:
Knowledge of the principles and practices of safe driving.
Knowledge of the provisions of the California Motor Vehicle Code and the Education Code applicable to the operation of vehicles transporting school students.
Knowledge of the local geography and road systems.
Knowledge of the principles and techniques of developing effective training programs.
Knowledge of basic first aid principles and practices.
Skill in planning and coordinating bus driver trainer programs.
Skill in instructing and training employees in the safe and efficient operation of buses and other District vehicles as needed.

Education, Training, and Experience:
Satisfactory completion of the course of study offered for School Bus Driver Trainers by the California Department of Education.

Possession of a valid California Class B/P Driver's License and a School Bus Driver's Certificate issued by the California Highway Patrol/Department of Motor Vehicles.
