Assignments are full-time (30 hours per week), split shift work schedule, NON 12-month employee Possession of a Commercial Driver's License from the state in which the driver resides. Must have Class A/B Learners or CDL License. MUST be 21 years or older. Ability to operate a school bus in a safe and efficient manner in an urban setting. Ability to supervise groups of students while driving a bus. Ability to understand directions regarding bus routes, the locations of bus stops, and the schedule of pick-up and special arrangements. Successful completion of the driver-training program offered by the Arlington Public Schools is required. Successful completion of the annual bus driver physical required by the Virginia State Board of Education is required. Must have negative test results for alcohol abuse and controlled substance use as required by the regulations issued by the U.S. Department of Transportation. Must possess a satisfactory driving record that shows that: A) Within the preceding five (5) years, the driver has not been convicted of a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol or controlled substances, has not been convicted of a felony, or has not been assigned to any alcohol safety action program or driver alcohol rehabilitation program. B) Within the preceding twelve (12) months, the driver has not been convicted of two (2) or more moving traffic violations or has not been required to attend a driver improvement clinic by the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles. The following may not include all requirements and duties performed: Under the supervision of the Transportation Operations Manager, drivers are responsible for safely transporting groups of children to and from school following assigned routes and schedules; Drivers also may be assigned field trips, extracurricular activity runs, etc., normally within a 50-mile radius of Arlington, but occasionally to more distant locations; Drives school bus on assigned routes, picking up and discharging children at designated locations; Drives school bus to designated locations, which may vary from day to day, based on the requirements placed on the Department; When driving children with physical disabilities, may be required to assist them in boarding and leaving the bus; Maintains order on the school bus, reporting the names of unruly passengers to the appropriate school principal and to the Supervisor of Transportation; Completes checks of the condition of assigned bus before leaving the Transportation yard each day; Maintains the cleanliness of the bus and checks gas, oil and water daily; Reports any deficiencies needing repair or maintenance; Files all required reports. Complies with all laws and regulations pertaining to the operations of the school bus, observes posted speed limits, and reports any accidents or damage to the Transportation Supervisor; Notifies the Arlington Public Schools Employee Assistance Program of any therapeutic drugs that are prescribed within twenty-four (24) hours of the doctor writing the prescription.     Human Resources is accepting applications for our School Bus Attendants APPLICANT POOL. Assignments are full-time (30 hours per week/11-month), with split shift work schedule. Interviews will take place on an as needed basis during the school year. A bus attendant, an assistant to the bus driver, contributes to the care and safety of students by freeing the bus driver to operate the bus in a safe manner. Work involves physically assisting students with disabilities, attending to their behavior, assisting in loading/unloading, securing seat belts. MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Completion of a high school education or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) and some experience working with special-needs students (preferred); OR any equivalent combination of education and experience that would provide the above noted knowledge, skill, and ability. Ability to follow oral and written instructions, to communicate with students and driver, both orally and in writing, and to develop and maintain effective relationships with fellow workers, students, and parents. Possession of the oral and written communication skills required to perform assigned tasks. Patience to assist students with disabilities while being transported. The following may not include all requirements and duties performed: Operates the controls on wheelchair lift-equipped buses to load and unload students at designated bus stops, schools, or centers; Assists with lifting, folding, unfolding, positioning, and securing wheelchairs with straps; assists children in braces and secures all children in seats; Physically assists pupils inside or outside in the immediate vicinity of the bus. Ensures that students' seat belts are fastened at all times; Assists driver in preparing for emergency evacuations from their bus and in performing said procedures in an emergency situation; may be required to communicate with parents, teachers, and other school staff regarding students (special instructions, behavior on bus, etc.); Some knowledge or ability to quickly learn the means of protecting oneself and others from the potential hazard from exposure to blood borne pathogens, excrement and other body fluids, and of safe effective cleaning and disposal methods; Patience with students who may become disruptive. Work may include lifting and/or carrying large students. Sufficient strength and agility to move, lift, and secure students and equipment and assist students with entering and exiting bus in regular and emergency situations. Salary based upon 25/26 pay plan.
