School District of Manatee County company history timeline

1901

When Doctor Ballard died in 1901, he left behind both educational and religious legacies for the community.

1922

Ballard Intermediate School, as it was originally named, became a tribute to the generosity of Doctor Ballard when it was named for him in 1922.

1955

The lunchroom was built in 1955 and was connected to the main building by a breezeway.

1963

Through the Vocational Act of 1963, the School District of Manatee County was the first in the state to receive funding to expand its technical center, one of the first in the State of Florida.

1965

In 1965, the state designated the center as an “area vocational school.” Thus, the School Board changed its name to Manatee Area Vocational Technical Center.

In 1965, additions were built to provide laboratories in masonry and drafting.

1966

In 1966, construction of more new buildings began.

1983

Ballard's ArchitectureThe original building included sixteen classrooms and an auditorium with a balcony, which was later sealed off in order to conserve energy in 1983 when air conditioning was installed.

1984

In 1984, sidewalks were built and the grounds were transformed from shell to sod.

2013

The original campus closed its doors when the new Main Campus opened in January of 2013, the year of the school’s 50th Anniversary.

2014

On December 9, 2014, after a unanimous vote from the School Board and support from students, staff and local business and industry, Manatee Technical Institute was renamed Manatee Technical College.

2020
