1971

He taught students at Cornish Institute and the Burnley School of Professional Art before founding the New School of Visual Concepts in 1971.

1992

In 1992, he founded Worker Bees, a healthcare marketing communications firm.

1994

His wife Cherry ran the school herself for the next nine years, until she died of cancer in 1994.

1998

Callie Neylan, a former SVC student, attended classes at the Aurora Avenue location in 1998 and recalled its gritty setting.

2001

Somewhat surprisingly, they thought it would be a good idea to start a letterpress program in 2001, when the rest of the world was abandoning print for pixels.

2010

2014

On December 1, 2014, the School of Visual Concepts begins offering classes in advertising, graphic design, and interactive design at its new location at 2300 7th Avenue in Seattle, near the intersection of Dexter Avenue N and Denny Way.

On December 1, 2014, SVC began classes in a new location at 2300 7th Avenue, near the intersection of Dexter Avenue N and Denny Way, at a site that originally housed British Motor Car Distributors.

In 2014, as the Aurora Avenue property was set for redevelopment, the School of Visual Concepts needed to find a new home.

2015

Since 2015, the school "has seen huge growth, due to the introduction of certificate programs and an increase in its corporate-training business" (Coffman).

2018

In 2018, during a round of layoffs at Starbucks, SVC offered employees who had recently lost their jobs one of their workshops free of charge.

2020

The Covid-19 pandemic forced Seattle into lockdown in March of 2020.

2021

Launched in the fall of 2021, Print Futures is a free, virtual presentation series created to support new voices in letterpress and build bridges between the emerging printers doing great work in educational institutions, community centers, and professional shops.
