Schuyler Hospital company history timeline

1934

Restoration of Fort Schuyler as the permanent land base of the New York State Merchant Marine Academy began in the summer of 1934.

1937

1937: Second Public Health Nurse position established

1944

1944: Schuyler County Chapter of the National Foundation for the infantile paralysis organized.

1945

1945: Tompkins County implements Rabies Control program and mass vaccination rabies clinic.

1949

When Doctor Culbertson died in 1949, it was no surprise that he willed the hospital to the people of Schuyler County, with the sole stipulation that it be named after his beloved wife and co-founder, Sarah DeWitt Culbertson, who had preceded him in death.

1950

In 1950, Culbertson was organized as a District Operated Hospital, incorporated under the laws of the State of Illinois.

1953

1953: Schuyler County recognizes Jane Delano’s efforts.

1954

1954: First Public Health Nurse hired directly by the county.

At the 34th annual meeting of the Shepard Relief Hospital Association in 1954, the hospital was renamed Schuyler Hospital to indicate that it was a community hospital.

1966

1966: Nursing Service Charges for Home Visits, and administration of measles vaccine started

1969

By 1969, a new hospital had been designed and a fund raising campaign was held to raise enough money to build a new hospital on the hillside overlooking the villages of Montour Falls and Watkins Glen.

1972

The disaster forced the evacuation of Elmira and Corning Hospitals, and thus the new Schuyler Hospital began to operate on July 14, 1972, amidst region-wide destruction of homes, factories, and lives.

As final preparations were being made to open the new hospital, the Southern Tier was devastated by Hurricane Agnes and the flood of 1972.

1975

The Rollin O. Baker Medical Arts building, named after one of the first doctors to practice in this County, opened in 1975 as a primary care clinic and the private office practices of Drs.

1978

1978: Licensing of dogs; rabies vaccination requirement

1993

Management changed hands along the years and in July of 1993, the hospital established the Primary Care Center (PCC). The PCC is a walk-in clinic staffed by hospital employed physicians and physician assistants.

September Hill Birth Center, the first freestanding rural birth center in New York State opened its doors in December 1993 as a direct response to community needs.

1995

A second Primary Care Center opened in 1995 in the village of Ovid, a medically underserved area located on the East shores of Seneca Lake, about 30 miles North of Montour Falls.

1997

1997: Mill Creek Center built and opened to public, merging of Mental Health and Public Health support staff

1998

In 1998, Culbertson ventured into another new arena by constructing Culbertson Gardens.

2000

Subsequent fortifications, including its Edicott Batteries were added, and Fort Totten remained an active United States Army base until 2000, at which time most of the land was turned over to New York City.

2001

In 2001, Culbertson Memorial Hospital expanded it's family practice services to include Fulton County with the addition of the Astoria Community Medical Clinic.

2002

2002: Attack of the Twin Towers in NYC; Schuyler County Health Department moves to Mill Creek Center from County Building, release of walking trail maps “Heart Healthy Trail” and Public Health Law for rabies clinics started.

2004

2004: “Reality Check” battles big tobacco and first health drill conducted.

2005

2005: Information about lead testing for infants in press.

2006

2006: Largest post exposure treatment for Rabies with Hidden Valley Campers.

2010

2010: Public Health donates playground to HEAD start.

2011

Through the financial support of Elmer Hugh Taylor and the City of Beardstown, Culbertson Memorial Hospital opened the Elmer Hugh Taylor Clinic in the fall of 2011.

2017

In 2017, Culbertson Memorial Hospital again expanded it's family practice services in Fulton County with the purchase of Community Medical Clinic of Table Grove.

2020

Culbertson Gardens was sold in 2020 to Tim and Sheila Ward and is now Country Gardens.
