The Medical Technologist (ASCP) performs accurate, precise, and timely patient test results for the diagnosis and management of human illness. Utilizes automation, computerization, and manual methods. Responsible for quality control and instrument operation, maintenance and troubleshooting. Position handles blood, tissue, fecal matter, sputum, urine, spinal fluid and other bodily fluids. Assist in gathering test data for evaluation of new methods and installation of equipment. - 15% Customer service to clinicians and clients. Must be comfortable and professional on the telephone, able to communicate with physician office staff, clinical staff, and all laboratory associates. Must be able to communicate with patients and their families, using service recovery when necessary. - 20% Quality assurance functions and equipment maintenance functions. Performs quality control checks on each procedure, equipment, reagents, stains, etc. Documents and interprets all QC data used by technologists to determine validity of patient results and verify instrument performance. Lab Assistant is responsible for performing phlebotomy, point of care testing and patient registration for Outreach clients. A basic knowledge of laboratory safety procedures and policies is necessary to ensure a safe working environment. Planning skills are useful to maintain supplies of analysis materials and ensure analysis is completed within specified time. Work Environment: The incumbent works in a laboratory setting with proper lighting and temperature control.
