City/State Norfolk, VA Work Shift Rotating Sentara Leigh Hospital is hiring a Student Vascular Tech Extern for the Peripheral Lab department. This is a Flexi Day shift position in Norfolk, VA. Hours: Operating hours are from 730am to 530pm Monday to Friday. Shift times can vary and are expected around 4 hours per week minimum based on availability.
The Student is a training role designed for a student enrolled in an accredited cardiovascular technology / Sonography programs. Under supervision, the student will assist in and perform selected procedures as appropriate, gaining hands-on clinical experience. Must have completed enough clinical hours in an accredited cardiovascular technology program that the student may use employed hours towards graduation requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Assist in preparation of patients for sonography procedures (explaining the procedure, positioning, ensuring patient comfort, obtaining patient history)
Operate specialized ultrasound equipment under supervision to perform basic echocardiogram studies
Assist or act as first assistant during diagnostic and therapeutic vascular related procedures, under physician or registered sonographer guidance
Maintain accurate patient records, image data, and documentation as required by the lab and hospital policy
Adhere to established protocols for patient safety, infection control, and equipment maintenance
Participate in educational activities, seminars, and in-service training to enhance knowledge of cardiac anatomy, physiology, pathology, and echo imaging techniques
Education:
Currently enrolled in an accredited cardiovascular technology or echocardiography sonography program
Have completed sufficient clinical hours so that some work may count toward program graduation requirements
High School diploma or equivalent required
Certification:
BLS (Basic Life Support) certification required
Experience:
Good communication skills: ability to interact empathetically with patients and work collaboratively with medical team preferred

* Laboratory Support
* Maintain clean laboratory by discarding waste and cleaning and sanitizing countertops, walls, floors, shelves, equipment, sinks, water baths etc using cleaning solvents

* Record findings on worksheet for verification
* Write identification onto plates so that client and sample number can be tracked
* Pipette sample solution into tubes or plates according to the analysis process being performed
* Pour the agar into plates or tubes to begin the growth process
* Prepare sample for analysis by recording, weighing, and blending
* Collect plates and place them in the incubator for the specified amount of time and temperature
* Prepare media and broth for use in pathogen testing as required
* Sterilize materials needed for analysis. Autoclave plates before discarding
* Perform food poisoning, pH and other analysis tests on sample when requested by the client
* Ensure that media and materials are prepared for the next testing sequence

YOUR PROFILE
Tuesday - Saturday Schedule
Associates degree or equivalent work experience and 1+ year relevant work; or, Bachelor's degree required. The incumbent must have a basic knowledge of microbiology to accurately perform testing procedures and obtain accurate results. A basic knowledge of personal computers is useful to accurately enter testing data and results. A basic knowledge of laboratory safety procedures and policies is necessary to ensure a safe working environment. Planning skills are useful to maintain supplies of analysis materials and ensure analysis is completed within specified time.
Required skills: Analytical skills are essential to complete analysis procedures and determine the concentration of the microorganism. A general knowledge of the Laboratory Information Management System is required to process client data. Physical dexterity is required for manipulating samples.
Work Environment: The incumbent works in a laboratory setting with proper lighting and temperature control. Occasional exposure to laboratory fumes, chemicals, and materials will occur when in the laboratory. Safety equipment of gloves, laboratory coat and eyeglasses may need to be worn depending on the testing process. The incumbent may use the autoclave daily to complete the analysis process. Continuous lifting of analysis materials weighing up to 50 pounds are necessary to transport media materials. The incumbent can expect extended time spent in a standing position. The incumbent should be able to detect slight variation in shades of colors.

Duties:
Under the direct supervision of the Laboratory Supervisor, the Phlebotomist/Clerk performs a variety of tasks related to phlebotomy, communications, patient flow, information processing and record keeping in the laboratory. The Phlebotomist/Clerk must be able to communicate intelligently by telephone, file reports, retrieve reports from file, relate information to others, direct patients to the proper place for assistance and perform limited waived testing. The Phlebotomist/Clerk must follow instructions exactly, write legibly, spell correctly and perform venipuncture, capillary puncture and waived tests in accordance with established quality laboratory standards. The Phlebotomist/Clerk must maintain the highest standards of professional performance in the delivery of comprehensive health care for patients.
Education:
High School Graduate or GED equivalent .
Certified phlebotomist , certification eligible or equivalent in training and/or experience.
Proof of certification from approved national certifying agency e.g. ASCP, NHA or IAPS required within six months of hire.
Minimum Qualifications:
Certified or certification eligible in accordance with an approved certifying agency e.g. ASCP, NHA, IAPS or equivalent required in training and/or experience.
Knowledge of medical terminology.
Ability to work without close and constant supervision.
Clerical ability required to accurately record, transcribe and calculate test reports and results.

In This Role:
Currently we need assistants in our Sample Management and Gen Lab Departments. This is the area of the lab where the samples first arrive.
You might be unbagging, sorting, tagging, or moving clinical samples around the laboratory.
You may be restocking supplies, such as chemicals or slide trays.
You could be helping to load analyzers with slides of samples.
You might be assisting with inventory counts.
You will be asked to help in out many ways - and your help is needed!
Pay & Schedule:
Hourly rates targeting: $20.25
These are temporary position where you will be working 40 hours / week.
The schedules shifts will likely be 6 am - 2:30 pm Tues - Sat, with a rotating Monday shift
Sometimes during our busy season, we ask workers if they would be able to work overtime, and stay until the work is complete.
The shifts and hours may vary slightly depending on business needs.
Reliable and dependable attendance is an essential function of the position.

Able to meet the physical requirements that go with working in a lab - standing and sitting for extended periods of time, ability to move or maneuver through various departments around the lab, use of hands, fingers, and arms to handle microscopes, pipettes, lab instruments and controls, occasional need to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, lift up to 25lb, and specific vision ability - close, color, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
This is a laboratory, so there is potential exposure to biohazards, agents known to cause zoonotic diseases, and hazardous chemicals.

Full time MLT position at Morrow County Hospital on third shift, Sign on Bonus of $7,500. The Medical Technologist (ASCP) performs accurate, precise, and timely patient test results for the diagnosis and management of human illness. Utilizes automation, computerization, and manual methods. Responsible for quality control and instrument operation, maintenance and troubleshooting.

Responsibilities And Duties:
- 55% Critical thinking, academic theory, facilitation/leadership abilities, and advanced customer service skills. Examples include but are not limited to: The performance of complex analysis of all body fluids and tissues. Determining the reliability of all analytic data before releasing as patient measurement for diagnosis and treatment. Interpreting information to make judgmental decisions and troubleshooting technical procedure and instruments. Utilizing knowledge of medical correlation of data, laboratory parameters, physiologic factors, medication effects, and specific medical treatments to assess the validity of laboratory data. Using appropriate testing techniques to evaluate new testing methodologies and practices. Demonstrating safety and infection control practices. - 15% Customer service to clinicians and clients. - 20% Quality assurance functions and equipment maintenance functions. Performs quality control checks on each procedure, equipment, reagents, stains, etc. Documents and interprets all QC data used by technologists to determine validity of patient results and verify instrument performance. Documents and reviews maintenance logs to assure optimum system performance, guaranteeing valid data and eliminating costly, time-consuming equipment failures.
- 5% Continuing Education and Competencies. Remains current in field. Trains new employees and students. Maintains competencies, mandatory educational requirements (ACE).
