ED Tech - Emergency Department Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center - Woodbridge, VA ~Part Time & Night shift~ 7:00pm-7:00am 24 hours/week Overview Assists the Physician, Advanced Practitioner, or Nurse in implementing plans of care for emergency/minor emergency care patients. Performs patient procedures and treatments under the supervision of the Physician, Advanced Practitioner, or Nurse. De-escalation and physical intervention training within 15 days of hire. BLS certification within 90 days of hire for all incumbents. New incumbents must have one of the following in addition to the minimum Education : 1. EMT-B with state or national certification at time of hire OR 2. Successful completion of US Military Hospital Corps School, qualified MMAC candidates OR 3. Current student enrolled in clinical program (e.g., RN, LPN, Respiratory, Physical Therapy) having completed at least one semester within the program. Candidates with prior employment in the Sentara ED tech job code in the past two years will also be considered in lieu of the 3 criteria above. Education HS - High School Grad or Equivalent Certification/Licensure Basic Life Support (BLS) - Certification - American Heart Association (AHA) 1. EMT-B with state or national certification at time of hire OR 2. Successful completion of US Military Hospital Corps School, qualified MMAC candidates OR 3. Responsibilities And Duties: 40% Patient Care Activities: Takes vital signs and weight; participates in patient admission and transfer; prepares patient for physician evaluation; measures and records intake and output; performs CPR; performs EKG; obtains EKG; places patient on cardiac monitor; obtains oxygen saturation levels; provides oxygen per physician order/protocol; assists patient with activities; assists with turning, positioning, and other ADL. Transfers patient safely to diagnostic testing, in-patient units, and other areas of the medical center. Responds to code assists. Utilizes orthopedic equipment; applies bandages and restraints as ordered. Applies compresses and bandages; applies heat and cold as directed; performs postmortem care. Irrigates NG tubes/connects NG tube to low wall suction; inserts Foley/straight catheters; maintains Foley catheter to straight drain; performs venous access to peripheral sites for lab draws, initiates peripheral IV catheters per MD order/protocol; discontinue peripheral intravenous catheters; cleanses wounds and applies sterile bandages as ordered. Paramedics provide emergency treatment, including advanced life support, to patients in emergencies. The Paramedic's role is to assess the urgent medical needs of patients and stabilize their conditions. Paramedics are the most highly trained emergency medical responders. A caregiver in this position works part-time night shifts from 7:00 p.m. - 7:00 a.m. with weekend and holiday requirements. A caregiver who excels in this role will: * Provide duties that assist in providing patient care in the Emergency Department under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse. * Obtain and record vital signs. * Perform EKGs, CPR, phlebotomy and oral, nasal and ET suctioning. * Initiate cardiac monitoring, oxygen therapy and saline locks. * Notify the RN and/or physician of rhythm changes. * Apply orthopaedic appliances and simple splints. * Size crutches and teach crutch walking. * Assist with equipment setup, chest tubes, gastric lavage, LP, etc. * Assist with restraint and seclusion of patients and apply restraint devices. * Transport patients and specimens. * Assist with sterile procedures and cleaning and maintaining supplies and equipment. * Maintain confidentiality and respect patient privacy. * Perform fluid/drug administration.
