Schuylkill Haven, PA company history timeline

1825

Fincher's settlement was called "Fincher's Ford." According to some records, the town was named after the Schuylkill Canal which was completed in 1825.

1840

The community was incorporated on June 11, 1840.

1884

Hoy opened his first general store business in 1884 west of the railroad tracks on Main Street in Schuylkill Haven.

1922

1922 - J.H. Zerby publishes Pottsville's first local morning newspaper.

1932

The Hotel Grand was destroyed by a colossal fire in March 1932, leaving the site to be later occupied by the more humble looking brick post office that is still there today.

1934

On July 30, 1934 the first official meeting of the newly formed Schuylkill Haven Free Library Association was held in the high school auditorium.

On August 31, 1934, the library facility in the East Ward School held an open house following a parade led by the high school band. "Tea and wafers" were served at an expense of $1.57.

Next to be dismantled was the portion of Hoy property that was home of “Abe’s Workingmen’s Store,” a local business operated by Harry Gabralovich, a fixture on Main Street since 1934.

1934 - John O'Hara's first novel, "Appointment in Samarra," is published.

1935

When the Educational Emergency Relief project was terminated in 1935, fundraising became a prime objective of the Association.

1937

1937 - Pottsville's City Hall is dedicated.

1938

Substantial help came in 1938 when the Rotary Club contributed $300 and the Woman's Club gave five dollars a month to purchase books.

1939

P.T. Hoy died at age 83 in March 1939, after a lengthy illness.

1943

1943 - The government takes control over the coal mines, including Schuylkill County's anthracite operations, when miners walked out on strike.

1949

1949 - Pottsville Boulevard (Route 61) opens.

1952

1952 - President Harry Truman visits Pottsville to campaign and is the only incumbent president to visit Schuylkill County.

1962

1962 - A trash fire in Centralia ignites the Mammoth vein of anthracite coal that still burns today.

1963

Ground breaking took place on July 1, 1963 and the library was temporarily housed at 14 St John Street.

1964

Finally in 1964 the rest of the once magnificent Hoy building was razed and Schuylkill Haven’s Main Street lost forever its Victorian past.

1966

The new library at 104 St John Street, its current location, was dedicated on June 26, 1966 during ceremonies featuring an address by Governor William W. Scranton.

1972

1972 - Locust Lake Park Opens.

1973

Contributions to the Library Trust Fund, which was established in 1973 by the Schuylkill Haven Rotary Club, have also provided considerable financial support.

1986

1986 - John F. Kennedy, Jr. visits John S. Clarke Elementary School in Pottsville.

1996

In 1996 the Board of Trustees decided to invest more than $50,000 of the trust fund holdings in the computerization of library operations.

1998

1998 - D.G. Yuengling and Son builds a new brewery in Port Carbon.

2014

2014 - Yuengling Ice Cream returns.
