SAIC company history timeline

1985

Sales jumped to $420 million in 1985--a 19 percent gain over the previous year--and net income grew to $14.5 million.

Indeed, in 1985 Science Applications was garnering nearly 90 percent of its total revenue from federal contracts and about two-thirds just from the Department of Defense.

1986

The overall strategy seemed to work, as Science Application's sales rose to 43 percent in 1986 to $600 million.

1987

Revenues continued to rise rapidly in 1987, by which time the company was employing 7,000 workers in 17 cities around the United States.

1992

Science Applications' spate of new civilian and military contracts allowed it to increase sales substantially to $1.29 billion in 1992, about $33 million of which was netted as income.

And IBM and J.B. Hunt Transport Inc. contracted the company to help design a system that communicated, via satellite and hand-held bar code readers, the status of freight on the road. It also won a job to provide a workstation-based score-reporting system for the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona.

1994

Sales rose to a record $1.7 billion in 1994 (fiscal year ended January 31, 1994) and profits hit $41.5 million, as the company's work force increased to 17,000.

1995

In 1995, moreover, revenues grew to $1.9 billion and net income increased to $49 million.

2011

In 2011, the former SAIC acquired Vitalize Consulting Solutions, a health-care IT company.

In the energy sector, the contractor had been selling its “Smart Grid as a Service” hardware and software product to utility companies since 2011.

2012

Discussions to split SAIC began in February 2012 and progressed quickly.

In August 2012, the Company acquired maxIT Healthcare Holdings, Inc., a healthcare IT consulting firm.”

2013

Then on September 27, 2013, it spun off a $4 billion unit which retained its name, while the parent company changed its name to Leidos.

2015

On May 4, 2015, SAIC acquired Scitor Holdings, Inc. for $790 million to expand their presence in the intelligence industry through classified contracts, cleared personnel, and a robust security infrastructure.

2020

On February 6, 2020, SAIC announced its acquisition of UNISYS US Federal, a competitor in the United States government services contracting sector, for a combined US$1.2 billion.

2021

The 2021 class of awardees at the Black Engineer of the Year Awards (BEYA) is the largest in Leidos history with 37 employees to be honored.
