We are developing a novel optical interconnect for interfacing with the brain and seeking an experienced ASIC designer with strong background in analog and mixed-signal integrated circuit design, solid track-record in bringing advanced silicon products from idea to product insertion. As Senior Mixed-Signal IC Designer, candidate should be able to work as a design lead for advanced mixed-signal ASICs, solve technocal challenges that come naturally when you tackle unmet problems in the intersection of biology, biomedical, and implantable circuits. As a senior IC designer, you will translate broad needs into Silicon specs, propose solutions, execute them technically with the design team, and work with other related groups to make sure that developed chips get inserted into products with success. While this role requires very strong technical skills and a good track record with successful tapeouts, it also requires skills in terms of project management and guiding team members along the projects. Ideal candidate should also have strong digital circuit design skills, as most of the chips we develop gets implanted, for which we need to integrate more and more custom digital features in our chips with small foot-print and low power.. Role responsibilities: * Work with other groups and teams in the company (Biology and Microfabrication) to translate the multi-disciplinary product requirements into design specifications for chips * From technical chip specifications, define suitable chip architectures, and from there define building blocks, and distribute it to the rest of the team * From specifications to tapeout and chip bring-up, own all the major steps. * Guide the design team, using real design examples. Delegate as much responsibility as possible to the design team, and help them succeed in their current assignments. Help them to grow for their next roles. * Perform detailed project planning and scheduling. Define milestones, technical review meetings, and deliverables. Track the progress during design and testing. The main goal in all these should be to ensure on-time tapeout with first-time-Silicon-success. * When the team starts struggling due to time pressure or hard to solve technical challenges, help the team by showing alternatives technical solutions at schematic and layout levels, supported by detailed analysis or circuit simulations. * For chip testing, interface PCB manufacturers, OSATs, and other service providers to fabricate test boards, perform wafer probing, dicing, and assembly Key qualifications: * MSc or PhD in Electrical Engineering, with 10+ years direct design experience as mixed signal IC designer * Solid background in transistor level analog and mixed-signal circuit design using CMOS technologies, from schematics to layout. * Solid understanding of active and passive devices available in mixed-signal CMOS technologies. * Experienced in low-noise and low-power circuit design, including voltage references, biasing circuits, opamps, comparators, digital-to-analog converters (DACs), analog to digital converters (ADCs) * Experience in noise amplifier (LNA) circuits used in high-fidelity analog front ends to detect very weak signals. * Experience in transistor level digital circuit design from schematics to layout using schematic and RTL capture. * Experience in designing, simulating, and verifying analog and mixed-signal designs from schematic entry to tapeout using industry standard IC design tools and design methodologies * Experience programmable timing generation using Delay-Locked-Loops (DLLs), Phase-Locked-Loops (PLLs), and high-speed counters. * Experience in high-speed serial data transmit and receive, using serializers and de-serializers, using low-voltage differential signalling (LVDS) transmitters and receivers * Fluency in high-level circuit modelling using Verilog-A and Verilog for mixed-signal and digital circuits * Experience in full-chip functional verification using Verilog-A and Verilog * Familiarity with all the laboratory tools and equipment used for chip bring-up and characterization starting from wafer probing to packaged device testing Preferred qualifications: * Experience digital circuit design from RTL to GDS is a plus * Familiarity with open-source analog and digital IC design tools is a plus * Familiarity with FPGA programming for chip testing and IP verification / emulation Salary/Pay Range: Science is required under California law to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. We are looking for experimental neuroscientists passionate about optogenetics and vision to accelerate the translational work for our optogenetic vision restoration project. Ideal candidates will have extensive experience performing electrophysiology in the visual system, building and improving experimental systems, performing animal behavior experiments and working with neural data. The number of positions varies from semester to semester, depending on the needs of the College. The pool will remain in place for three calendar years; those interested in remaining in the pool beyond that time must reapply. Role responsibilities: * Security Leadership * Partner with our fractional CISO to design and implement a holistic security program with controls across the entire hybrid infrastructure: on-prem servers and services, IoT/lab systems, cloud workloads, local workstations, and SaaS. * Serve as primary point of contact within the business for all technical inquiries work related to cybersecurity and technology risk management. * Be the primary change agent to drive adoption of enhanced security controls and processes across the company. * Broadly educate colleagues to the requirements of regulations the company may be subject to, including GDPR & CCPA. * Regularly report to executive leadership and principal stakeholders about ongoing changes. * Collaborate with key principals to account for unusual requirements of scientific equipment. * Establish security metrics and KPIs to track posture improvements and communicate risk trends to leadership. * Participate in on-call rotation and respond to critical security incidents outside business hours. * Secure Product Development * Collaborate with the software team to integrate application security (threat modeling, SAST, dependency management, and secure CI/CD) into the overall software development life cycle. * Guide developers on secure coding practices and assist in reviewing designs for data protection and compliance. * Deploy and maintain tools which reduce risks related to software development. * Support product teams in implementing privacy-by-design principles. * Infrastructure & Operations * Partner with IT to harden servers, networks, and endpoints; define baseline configurations and asset inventory processes. * Own technical incident response: detections, containment, remediation, and post-hoc forensics. * Manage access via identity plane and network segmentation. * Harden Google Workspace configurations. * Enhance forensics and detections through centralized logging within the corporate infrastructure, cloud presence, and custom applications. * Automate vulnerability management and patch processes for both on-prem and cloud systems. * Improve corporate resiliency with a robust disaster recovery program which covers both traditional disaster scenarios and attacks by malicious parties, both internal and external. * Leverage integrations and automation to move the company closer to adherence with zero-trust principles. * Evaluate and deploy new security tools and technologies as appropriate for scale and risk. * Team & Cross-Functional Work * Serve as the technical counterpart to our fractional CISO, translating strategy into engineering implementation. * Mentor IT and software engineers on security practices. * Manage relationships with external vendors and consultants supporting security operations. Key qualifications: * 7+ years of experience in security engineering, infrastructure security, or DevSecOps. * Strong knowledge of Linux administration, network security, and cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP). * Experience with endpoint management across mixed OS environments (Windows, MacOS, Linux). * Strong experience with security and privacy requirements for healthcare or regulated data. * Hands-on capability to script & automate, specifically with regards to on-prem infrastructure such as workstations, servers, and network kit. * Track record of building security programs from the ground up or during high-growth phases. * Experience managing security incidents from detection through resolution, including coordination with legal, compliance, and external parties (law enforcement, vendors, regulators). Preferred qualifications: * Experience securing research, laboratory, or healthcare environments with specialized equipment and regulatory requirements (FDA, HIPAA, or equivalent). * Experience with medical device security or FDA regulatory compliance. * Security certifications (CISSP, OSCP, CEH, or cloud security certifications). * Background in threat intelligence or security research. Ideal candidates will have extensive experience in neural tissue engineering, are proficient working with a range of biomaterials, including functionalized hydrogels, and are skilled in tissue culture. Successful candidates will work closely with cell biologists, fabrication engineers, neuroscientists, and surgeons to drive cell-device scaffold development to enable robust survival, differentiation, and integration of engrafted cells while maintaining proximity to devices. We are looking for a hands-on, experienced Opto-Mechanical Engineer to support development of our next generation therapeutic devices. This specific role will be heavily involved in the design, integration, and fabrication of precision opto-mechanical systems. The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented self-starter who thinks outside the box, is comfortable with open-ended problems, and is able to pivot quickly. Work at Science is highly collaborative, cross functional, and encompasses the range from micro (we work in microns) to macro (some machines weigh hundreds of pounds). Role & Responsibilities: * Design and develop precision optical and mechanical components for AR glasses, including optical elements, mounts, housings, and adjustment mechanisms * Create and maintain detailed technical documentation, including specifications, drawings, and analysis reports * Collaborate with cross-functional teams including optical engineers, electrical engineers, industrial designers, and manufacturing engineers * Develop prototypes and conduct testing to validate designs and identify improvements * Analyze and resolve optical and mechanical design issues throughout product development * Optimize designs for manufacturability, reliability, and cost-effectiveness * Evaluate and select appropriate materials and manufacturing processes * Collaborate with Clinical and Regulatory teams to define functional requirements and validation methods * Directly engage with hardware assembly and testing through production scale-up Key qualifications: * BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Physics or related field * 5+ years of precision opto-mechanical design experience, preferably in wearable or consumer electronics * Highly skilled in 3D modeling of parts and assemblies, Solidworks preferred * Demonstrated hands-on skills building optical systems * Strong fundamental understanding of optical and mechanical principles * Understanding of human factors related to wearable devices, including ergonomics and comfort * Strong fabrications skills beyond 3D printing - we make precision parts, internally where possible * Mechanical simulation and calculation experience (ie structural FEA) * Fluent in DFMA (machining, molding, precision alignment) * Strong communication skills Preferred qualifications: * Experience with AR/VR systems, specifically display technologies and optical architectures * Experience with thermal management in compact optical systems * Class II/III medical device experience with exposure to IEC 60601 design requirements * Comfortable with CNC and CAM programming * Proficiency with 3D CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks) and optical design software (e.g., Zemax) Salary/Pay Range: Science is required under California law to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role.
