TITLE: Research Scientist

PAY RANGE: $90,000 - $125,000 + bonuses
REPORTS TO: Technical Director or as otherwise assigned.
The Research Scientist will typically report to the Technical Director but may report to another member of Technology Management, as required. The Research Scientist is responsible for completing assigned research projects focused on the development of quantitative analytical chemistry techniques in support of Edeniq's business objectives including experimental design and conduct, data analysis, generation of meaningful conclusions and recommendations, and timely report writing. Responsibilities will also include conception and design of research projects and objectives, as well as supporting Edeniq Management in the development of technology strategy. Supervision of one or more Support Staff can be expected. Direct support of Company Intellectual Property development can also be expected. The Research Scientist will have a strong personal commitment to safety and be able to succeed in a fast-paced collaborative environment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Conducts and completes assigned research projects:
Defines research objectives, milestones, and timelines. Defines project resource requirements.
Writes concise research project proposals for Technical Director review and approval.
Ensures project research is conducted consistent with project objectives, milestones, and timelines. Effectively manages project resources.
Effectively communicates progress toward project objectives, milestones, and timelines to Technical Director and Company Management, as required. Recommends, when appropriate, revisions in project objectives, milestones, and timelines.
Analyzes experimental data and generates scientifically valid conclusions and recommendations, as needed, for future research.
Provides timely written reports to Company Management describing progress toward project objectives, milestones, and timelines. Provides timely final project report upon project completion.
Works with Technology and Company Management to identify and pursue Intellectual Property derived from research project results.
Supervises one or more members of Support Staff including direction of daily project activities, data review, coaching and counseling, and performance feedback.
Remains current on relevant scientific literature and intellectual property landscape. Develops and maintains competitive intelligence in relevant areas.
Directly supports Technology and Company Management in defining new research projects and potential new areas for development.
Maintains accurate lab and data records in accordance with Company policies.
Ensures a hygienic work environment, participating in lab cleanliness, organization, and other tasks. Supports and adheres to all company policies on safety, chemical hygiene, and the environment.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Demonstrated ability to develop and validate novel and robust quantitative analytical chemistry methods.
Extensive knowledge of modern analytical techniques:
Chromatography (including hyphenated techniques)

Exceptional quantitative data analysis and computer skills:

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS - LAB:

The mission of the Board of Governors Regenerative Medicine Institute aims to prevent and treat the world's most prevalent diseases through cell revitalization and transplantation. Work in the laboratory of Arun Sharma, PhD, focuses on applying human induced pluripotent stem cells (hi PSCs) to model cardiovascular diseases in vitro. The lab utilizes cutting-edge technologies, including hi PSCs, CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing, cardiac microfluidic organ-chips and cardiac organoids in our studies. Specifically, we have used hi PSC-derived cardiomyocytes (heart muscle cells) to model cardiac viral infections during COVID-19, examine developmental mechanisms underlying congenital heart disease and understand ways to alleviate cardiac toxicity caused by cancer drugs. The Postdoctoral Scientist may develop, adapt, and implement new research techniques and protocols, and will analyze, compile, and interpret data.
Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities:
• May assist in preparation of grant proposals, submissions, publications and presentations but is not responsible for generating grant funds.
• Participate in publications and presentations as author or co-author.
• Designs and performs experiments, especially in regards to stem cell culture.
• Keeps appropriate experimental records and documentation and analyze the results with the Co-Principal Investigator.

The Schaeffer Center is seeking a Research Scientist, who will work closely with the Co-Director of the Aging and Cognition Program to plan, design, and execute research projects in the areas of economics of aging, cognitive and functional health over the lifecourse, risk, care and economic outcomes of dementia, Parkinson's disease and other neurological diseases.
This position is a one-year appointment with the possibility of renewal dependent on needs of the projects and the Research Scientist's progress toward developing and securing external funding.
Key duties include, but are not limited to:
Planning, designing, and conducting of highly specialized, technical, and complex research projects independently
Contributing to the development of advanced concepts, techniques, and standards
Identifying, researching, compiling, and evaluating data sources, background information and/or technology related to area of specialization
Developing and applying dynamic microsimulation data programming skills
Analyzing and evaluating survey and administration claims research data and providing interpretations requiring significant knowledge of a specialized area of research
Developing data files and research documentation
Writing papers and publishing study results
Presenting at academic conferences
Providing leadership, direction, and guidance to staff and/or student workers
Minimum Education:
Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate
Minimum Experience:
5 years directly related education and experience in research specialization with highly advanced knowledge of equipment, procedures, analysis methods, principles, theories, and concepts.
Must have demonstrated leadership in developing new ideas and ability to publish in academic outlets (i.e., first authored publications, conceptual leadership in the development of publications generated alone or with others, and/or writing of first drafts of publications and/or single authored publications).
Compensation
The annual base salary range for this position is $117,128 - $132,000. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state, and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.

Performs, evaluates and documents quality control checks. Reviews testing results evaluating validity of test results in comparison to anticipated results indicated per procedure manual.
Reviews and evaluates the validity and accuracy of test results, recognizing the interdependency of tests, the physiological conditions affecting results, patient age and normal values, controls, linearity errors, instrument codes, delta checks and more. Correlates test results with diagnoses and questions incompatible results. Thoroughly documents and communicates test results, expediting all critical values and results to appropriate clinicians.
Disposes of contaminated materials and equipment in accordance with policy and assures that work area is properly cleansed after each test.
