Position Summary:
The Store Project Lead supports the Store Project Manager in executing store remodels, relocations, and special projects across West Marine's retail network. This hands-on role assists in coordinating a crew of 7-10 team members, ensuring projects are completed on time, within budget, and to West Marine's quality standards. The Store Project Lead focuses on day-to-day crew coordination, task execution, and operational support while learning project leadership skills.
This position requires significant travel (up to 75% annually) with typical assignments lasting 2-4 weeks at remote locations. The Store Project Lead must be flexible and available for overnight work, extended shifts, weekend work, and schedule changes to accommodate critical project milestones. Success in this role requires strong work ethic, attention to detail, safety awareness, and the ability to work effectively as part of a traveling project team.
The Store Project Lead works under the direct supervision of the Store Project Manager, supporting crew operations, ensuring safety compliance, and assisting with communication to store operations teams and corporate stakeholders.
Primary Responsibilities:
Key Responsibility #1: Crew Coordination & Support:
Lead assigned work teams and coordinate daily task assignments
Monitor crew productivity and report issues to the Store Project Manager
Help resolve minor crew conflicts and maintain positive team morale
Ensure crew members take required breaks and meal periods
Track crew timekeeping and submit timesheets for approval
Key Responsibility #2: Project Execution & Quality:
Execute assigned tasks according to blueprints, planograms, and fixture plans
Oversee fixture assembly, merchandise placement, and visual merchandising standards
Ensure work meets West Marine brand standards and quality expectations
Conduct work area inspections and identify issues requiring attention
Document project progress through photos and work logs
Assist with project change orders and communicate issues to Store Project Manager
Coordinate with store teams on operational needs during project execution
Key Responsibility #3: Safety Compliance & Hazard Prevention:
Enforce OSHA safety regulations and West Marine safety policies
Participate in daily safety huddles and conduct work area safety checks
Ensure proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) by crew members
Identify and report safety hazards immediately to Store Project Manager
Assist with incident reports if injuries occur
Maintain safety equipment and first aid supplies at jobsites.
Follow all store security protocols and operating hour restrictions
Key Responsibility #4: Logistics & Equipment Support:
Assist with unloading equipment, tools, and materials at project sites
Help manage company vehicles including fueling
Support proper loading, transport, and unloading of project materials
Track tool and equipment inventory; report losses or damages
Ensure proper storage and security of company assets at project sites.
Assist with project supply orders and material needs
Key Responsibility #5: Travel & Expense Support:
Maintain personal travel expense records and submit reports on time
Follow travel policies and per diem guidelines
Coordinate personal hotel needs with Store Project Manager
Report travel issues or disruptions to Store Project Manager.
Assist Store Project Coordinators with travel questions as needed
Key Responsibility #6: Communication & Documentation:
Provide work updates to Store Project Manager daily or as requested
Communicate urgent issues or delays immediately to project leadership
Maintain professional relationships with store management and staff
Complete daily work logs and progress documentation.
Participate in project debriefs and lessons learned sessions
Education, Experience & Skills:
High school diploma or GED required; Business, or related field preferred
Minimum 1-3 years of experience in retail, construction, warehouse operations, or project support roles
Experience with team coordination or supervisory responsibilities preferred
Background in fixture assembly, merchandising, or store operations a plus
Valid driver's license with clean driving record (required for company vehicle operation)
Ability to pass background check and drug screening
Must be available for extended travel (up to 85% travel with assignments lasting 2-4 weeks)
Technical Skills:
Ability to read and follow project directions, planograms, and fixture installation instructions
Basic knowledge of retail fixture systems and merchandising displays
Proficiency with basic hand tools and power tools
Familiarity with project management software (Microsoft Excel, Outlook, Teams)
Knowledge of basic OSHA safety regulations and construction safety practices

Repetitive bending, kneeling, squatting, and reaching to assemble fixtures and stock merchandise
Stand, walk, bend, kneel, and climb ladders for extended periods (8-12 hour shifts)
Work in varying environmental conditions including non-climate-controlled spaces
Tolerance for occasional overnight work or extended hours to meet deadlines
Ability to work weekends and holidays as project schedules require
Work Schedule & Hours Requirements:
Must be available to work overnight shifts (typically 8pm-6am) to minimize disruption to store operations during remodels and installations
Extended shifts of 10-14 hours may be required during critical project phases
Weekend work (Saturday and Sunday) is frequently required to meet project deadlines
Holiday work may be necessary when project timelines demand it
Flexibility to adjust schedule based on store operating hours and project needs
Occasional 24-hour project cycles during grand openings or major resets
