1. Have the ability to comprehend and utilize blueprints, sketches, drawings, technical

manuals, and work process instruction.

2. Welds steel plates and pipe in the repair and/or construction of marine vessels, industrial components, and associated equipment.

3. Have the skills to use various types of welding equipment for different types of metal.

4. Welds components in a flat, vertical, or overhead positions.

5. Performs related tasks such as cutting and grinding.

6. Repairs broken or cracked parts, fills holes, and increases size of metal parts.

7. Welds metal parts together using gas welding, brazing, arc welding, wire fed welding, or tig welding process and procedures.

8. Highly skilled welders often are trained to work with a wide variety of materials, such as titanium, aluminum, or exotic metals, in addition to steel.

9. Select and set up welding equipment, execute the planned welds, and examine the welds to ensure that they meet standards or specifications.

Required Education & Experience:

1. High School Diploma, some college or technical school certification, six months to one year(s) experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

2. Must pass an ABS, or ASME weld test. Must also be able to pass x-ray testing.

Working Conditions:

1. Open-air conditions such as noisy, hot, cold, etc.

2. Must be able to stand and operate equipment up to four continuos hours.

3. Must wear hearing, eye, head protection and proper PPE.

4. Some climbing (100 feet or higher) and lifting (50 lbs.) involved.

5. Working with hot and sometimes hazardous materials.

6. Work on inland and offshore barges or in industrial settings.

7. Enter round manholes with inside diameters of 18”, and other internally confined spaces.

8. Traverse gangways and scaffolding at varying heights.

Necessary Equipment Operation:

1. Blow torches- Motorized cutting torches; Pattern cutting torches; Welding torches

2. Gas welding, brazing, or cutting apparatus- Brazing equipment; Heliarc welding equipment; Oxyacetylene equipment; Portable gas operated arc welders.

3. Manlift or personnel lift- hydraulic truck lifts; Swing stages

4. Weld masks- Hand shields; Welding shields

Welder Position Basic Requirements:

Plate Welder 2nd Class (PLW2) - Welder capable of welding SMAW or FCAW on plate/structural with ABS Q2+4G or ASME or AWS plate test (2G+3G+4G).

Plate Welder 1st Class (PLW1) - Welder capable of welding SMAW & FCAW on plate/structural with ABS Q2+4G or ASME or AWS plate test (2G+3G+4G).

Pipe Welder 2nd Class (PPW2) – Welder capable of welding SMAW or FCAW on plate/structural &SMAW or FCAW on pipe with ABS Q3 or AWS 6g pipe test.

Pipe Welder 1st Class (PPW1) – Welder capable of welding SMAW & FCAW and or GTAW on pipe. Must Pass ABS Q3 or ASME 6G or AWS 6G pipe test.

Combination Welder - Pipe/Plate/Structural (PPLW)– Welder capable of process / structural pipe and plate welding using GTAW+FCAW and or GTAW+SMAW.

Position Summary:

We are seeking a highly dynamic Welder for our Second Shift. This position performs welding on most equipment fabricated at our Zelienople facility while learning to be proficient in all equipment. Learn to tack and fit as needed in the shop.

Our second shift works a four-day schedule from Monday through Thursday. The hours are 2:00 PM – 12:30 AM with a $2.00 Shift Premium!

Responsibilities:

• Review project assignment and instructions from Team Leader

• Review drawings and welding details for this job.

• Participate in tier meetings

• Obtain understanding of task and develop action plan

• Set up welding machine and other required equipment

• Weld assemblies per the required standards

• Ensure work meets quality standards

• Practice safety in all aspects of the job and participate in safety improvement programs

• Look for Safety Issues with equipment and processes

• Understand the Principles of Lean Manufacturing (5S System should be followed in their work area)

• Participate in Kaizen(focused improvement) projects

• Learn best practices from team leaders and other team members to improve your knowledge and skill levels.

• Recommend process improvements on idea boards

• Consistently look for ways to eliminate waste

Qualifications:

• High School diploma or GED required

• A combination of training and welding experience is required for this position

• Ability to consistently produce high quality welds on all fabricated components

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Ability to pass AWS D1.1 welding qualifications as well as AWS D14.6 if it applies to their shop

• Read and understand Robinson weld detail drawings, welding procedures, and shop travelers. Fluent in English, working with written and verbal communication

Join HII Marine Services Operations in Chesapeake, VA in supporting U.S. Naval shipboard operations with maintenance and modernization efforts. This Welder: Second Class position will have you working closely with our skilled trades teams, utilizing various tools of the trade, removing, installing and upgrading industrial equipment for fleet modernization alterations and installations. Selected candidate will be required to travel to shipyards and military bases located around the country and abroad when not assigned to a local task. Per Diem provided based on location when on travel. Travel and lodging expenses are covered by the company.

Candidate must be able to demonstrate welding ability on needed processes through qualification testing and pass with a satisfactory grade from our Quality Assurance Team within the first three weeks from start date for continued employment.

What You Will Do…

* Display levels of quality, integrity, safety, respect, engagement and performance consistent with company values.
* Work from blueprints, engineering sketches, charts or work orders.
* Lay out and mark points on parts or subassemblies using rule, square, scribe or templates.
* Cut, fit, assemble and position pieces to be welded into jigs, holding fixtures, guides and steps using measuring instruments and hand and powered tools.
* Apply comprehensive understanding of appropriate welding processes to join, surface, fabricate, or repair parts of metal or other weld-able materials toward completion of assignments.
* May inspect completed work for conformance to specifications.
* Provide guidance and work leadership to less-experienced welders. May serve as a team leader.
* Perform all work in accordance with established safety procedures.
* Participate in special projects as required.
* Perform a variety of complicated and non routine tasks.
* Develop and use technical documents including controlled work packages, formal work processes and procedures, test documents, reports and task or trip reports.
* Schedule, report and brief customers and senior management.
* Perform duties outside of specialty in order to complete installation or work assignment.
* Meet standards on various contracts such as Naval Undersea Warfare Center, Naval Information Warfare Systems Command and Naval Surface Warfare Center.
* Install, operate, maintain, repair and modify equipment.
* Troubleshoot and diagnose malfunctions to eliminate problems in minimum time.

What You Must Have…

* Must be a U.S. citizen.
* High School education, or Trade School or equivalent, and 4 years of related experience. Prefer technical/professional certifications
* Must be able to demonstrate welding ability on needed processes through qualification testing and pass with a satisfactory grade from our Quality Assurance Team within the first three weeks from start date for continued employment.
* Must have in depth knowledge and experience of various welding processes with various base materials
* Must have strong knowledge of blueprint reading and interpretation, with the ability to interpret sketches and drawings to develop specifications for product to be fabricated and/or installed
* Must have experience working in a team environment.
* Must be able to obtain and maintain a DoD secret security clearance, and maintain clearance level throughout employment.
* Must be able to obtain base access credentials within 60 days of start date, and maintain credentials throughout employment.
* Must be able to travel between 50% - 75% when not assigned to local tasking.
* Must be able to provide hand tools per trades designation.

Preferred: Bonus Points For…

* Candidates with pipe welding experience on marine vessels and associated systems preferred.
* Combination pipe and structural welders preferred.
* Candidates who are currently enrolled or have graduated from and/or completed a vocational school or skilled trades certificate program are preferred.
* Current OSHA 10 Maritime Certificate a plus

Physical Requirements

Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 30 lbs. Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces. Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels. May ride ships at sea for extended periods. May require wearing a respirator. Travel may be required within and outside of the continental United States.
