Security
* Maintains continual observation of deputies in multiple adults in custody living units to provide critical support specifically in the event of an emergency or risk to the deputy and for the overall safety, security, and orderly operations of the facility.
* Observes activities and individuals within an assigned area of the Corrections Facility. Utilizes direct visual scans and closed circuit television monitors to identify potentially serious situations and adults in custody rule violations. Takes prescribed action.
* Operates touch-screen access control devices. Monitors audible alarms and other visual/ auditory surveillance systems in order to respond appropriately and in a timely manner to situations as they occur.
* Communicates with other staff via two-way radios and intercoms.
* Regulates access by adults in custody, civilians, and staff to assigned areas by remotely opening and closing electronic doors to assist in maintaining security and safety within the facility.
* Verbally interacts with and visually tracks individuals or groups of adults in custody or civilians within the facility. Inquires about identity, purpose, and destination, and notifies staff of expected activities and movement within the facility.
* Accesses and inputs data in various computerized systems and databases.
* Initiates and maintains neat, accurate, and complete reports; maintains a logbook of activities and checks.
* Assists in coordination of personal and professional adults in custody visits within the secure perimeter of the facility. Monitors adults in custody visits and phone calls utilizing visual and auditory senses. Initiates audio recordings when necessary.
* Works in a 24-hour, 7-day per week facility, with rotating shift schedules and workstations. This includes working a variety of shifts, weekends, holidays and overtime as required.
* Verbally communicates with staff, adults in custody, the public and other criminal justice personnel. This verbal communication sometimes involves using a loud command voice that can be heard over other institutional noises.
* Remains constantly alert and observant throughout the shift.
* Negotiates flights of stairs.
* Dons emergency equipment in a safe and efficient manner for routine training and in crisis situations.
* Maintains key and equipment control. Controls and coordinates access to and egress from the unit.
* Monitors audio traffic on the radios, telephones and intercoms, and acts as a dispatching agent within the unit and to other areas of the facility. Monitors the fire alarm system.
* Receives headcounts from pod officer and others (e.g., health services staff, maintenance workers, etc.) and acts as a remote supervision post when the officer is not in the unit.
* Verbally deals with adults in custody over the intercom to provide instructions or to give directions to maintain the safe, secure and orderly operation of the facility.
Administration
* Maintains adults in custody files in a complete, accurate, neat fashion, and filed alphabetically.
* Purges files as necessary.
* Attends and participates in facility and unit briefings.
* Attends and participates in other meetings and training as required.
* Initiates and maintains neat, accurate and complete reports, memos, disciplinary reports and logbook entries.
* Accesses, inputs and retrieves electronic mail briefings and other information through the department's automated information system.
* Adheres to, implements and enforces job-related rules, policies, procedures and post orders in a manner which promotes the safe, secure and orderly operation of the facility.
* Maintains, checks and requests supplies as necessary.
* Assists with any special projects when needed.
* Performs other duties as assigned.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
* Graduation from high school; AND
* Two years of employment experience which included utilization of a computer; OR
* Any satisfactory combination of work, education, training, or experience relevant to the position, as determined by Marion County.
SPECIAL CHARACTERISTICS
* Ability to pass a background investigation. Must be free of criminal convictions, except for minor traffic violations.

Screening Process for Laterals:

A lateral police officer has completed at least 3 years of continuous service and is in good standing with his/her current or most recent police agency as a sworn police officer (responsible for 9-1-1 calls) for a recognized state, county, or city (municipal) entity.
Upon review of application and meeting the lateral police officer definition, successful applicants will take part in an initial virtual interview. Successful candidates will then be invited for the remaining screening process to be completed as follows, if possible:
* Trip #1: Formal interview (oral board) and command interview. Each step must be successfully completed before moving to the next.
* Trip #2: If successful in each of the steps in the first trip, the applicant may receive a conditional offer of employment and may be scheduled for a psychological and medical evaluation to be completed as part of Trip #2.
Prior to a formal offer being extended, selected candidates will be extended a conditional offer of employment contingent upon a successful preemployment background investigation followed by a successful psychological and medical evaluation including drug screen.

NATURE OF WORK
Performs police patrol, investigation, traffic regulation, and related law enforcement activities.

* Undertakes community-oriented police work, and assists citizens with such matters as public service assistance, crime prevention, drug abuse resistance education (DARE), traffic safety, etc.
* Coordinates activities with department, city, state and community members as needed, exchanges information with officers in other law enforcement agencies, and obtains advice from the City Attorney and District Attorney regarding cases as needed and assigned.
* Maintains communication with police supervisory personnel to coordinate investigation activities, provide mutual assistance during emergency situations, and provides general information about department activities.
* Maintains departmental equipment, supplies, and facilities.
* Serves as a member of various City committees as assigned.
* Assists other staff in the performance of their duties as assigned.

Supervision/Lead Work Exercised

High school diploma or GED equivalent. Special consideration may be given for a college degree in criminal justice, social science, or related field.
b) KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
* General knowledge of: modern law enforcement principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment. Working knowledge of the following: pertinent city, county, state, and federal laws; geography of the city; and location of important buildings.

Compensation:
This position is a full-time, non-exempt position, eligible for the regular union benefits package. The starting wage is $25.11 per hour during the nine (9) month probationary period. After successful completion of probation, the wage is increased to $27.86 per hour with a percentage wage increases every nine (9) months thereafter until reaching the current top wage of $35.87 per hour. The work schedule for this position is determined by a seniority bid system and varies (days, nights, weekends). Lateral Police Officers will start at a higher pay step than entry-level applicants. * Patrol parking lots, buildings, and grounds; report criminal activities as observed to campus law enforcement personnel for investigation. Provide building access.

Salaries and Fringe Benefits
Recruit Police Officers receive a beginning annual salary of $78,187.20 annually; with experience, education, and training officers can advance to the top step of $99,673.60* annually. After three years of employment, officers are eligible for premium pay for education and certification. Premium pay can be worth up to 15% of an officer's base salary. In addition, Police Officers can qualify for a 5% increase for demonstrated fluency in an eligible language (such as Spanish or American Sign Language). Up to 5% shift differential.
Bilingual Pay Benefit
Per the EPEA Contract, the City shall pay an employee at 5% of base wages for a required intermediate or advanced level competency. To qualify for bilingual pay, the employee must have demonstrated fluency in the required language and successfully pass a fluency examination administered by the City's Employee Resource Center division.
