The Springfield College Department of Public Safety is a full-service police agency that serves the College Community and operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The shift will be determined by the needs of the department. Under general direction, the Police Officers works directly with Community Service Officers (CSO's), and assists personnel in Parking Services, the Dispatch Center, Transportation & Shuttles, Student Workers, Springfield College EMS, etc.

Responsibilities

Qualifications

Essential Duties:
The University Police Officer creates and maintains a safe and secure environment for the students, faculty, and staff. This is accomplished through proactive community and problem oriented policing as well as leveraging partnerships and collaboration across campus to foster a safe community. Specifically, the University Police Officer will be expected to do the following:
Protect life and property. Working as a member of a team, and in problem-solving partnerships with the community, actively seeks to identify safety and security-related problems and concerns and take the necessary steps to resolve those problems or concerns efficiently and effectively.
Respond safely and rapidly to emergency calls for police service, such as reports of crimes in progress, suspected criminal activity, medical emergencies, environmental emergencies, fires, fire alarms, motion and intrusion alarms, and accidents etc. Render aid and assistance to victims, advising them of available services, and making appropriate referrals to available resources. Conduct thorough investigations of incidents and follow-up investigations as assigned.

Prevent criminal activity in and around WNE University through highly visible, omnipresent police patrols. Attend community events and speak to students, faculty, and/or staff.
Using analytical data to educate and inform preventative patrol tactics and problem-solving strategies.
Performing traffic direction, parking enforcement, and crowd control duties as assigned.
Knowledge of police practices and investigative procedures of a comprehensive campus law enforcement program.
Knowledge of and ability to interpret, apply, and make decisions following pertinent state and local laws and regulations.
Operate specialized law enforcement equipment, including police vehicles, radios, software and video systems.

Use the call number assigned to the care to contact headquarters.
Operate the radio in line with FCC regulations and current departmental procedures.
Remain on assigned route throughout his tour of duty except when a police emergency necessitates a temporary absence, or when a superior officer or the Dispatcher has issued such authorization.
Patrol every part of beat giving particular attention to and frequently rechecking locations where the crime hazard is great. Insofar as possible shall not patrol area according to any fixed route or schedule but shall alternate frequently and back track to be at the location least expected.

The examination will consist of the rating of an oral test. All parts of the examination, including tests and ratings, will be related to the requirements of the position. To be appointed, candidates must also pass a drug test, a background investigation which includes a polygraph examination, a psychological examination, an interview with the Chief of Police, a physical examination, and a working test/probationary period of one year after graduation from the Police Academy. All parts of the examination are designed to determine the ability of applicants to learn and perform the duties of a Police Officer in a multi-culturally diverse environment. This examination and employment process is subject to all federal, state, municipal laws, rules and regulations.

Position Requirements:
The duties and responsibilities of a Security Officer include, but are not limited to:
