Must perform general law enforcement duties.
Authority: Under S.C. Code 23-13-10 (Appointment), the Sheriff may appoint Deputies. Under S.C. Code 23-13-50 (General Powers), a Deputy Sheriff may perform any and all duties appertaining to the office. S.C. Code 16-23-20 allows law enforcement officers to carry weapons.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
* Provide armed security in Beaufort County magistrate's courtrooms.
* Maintain strict security at court entrances through the use of electronic detection devices.
* Ensure the safety of court personnel and the general public.
* Maintain order and silence in courtroom waiting areas.
* Ensure strict security in courtroom prisoner detention areas.
* Carry out orders and directions provided by the court and perform all duties in compliance with applicable policies, procedures, laws, regulations and standards of safety.

Minimum Training and Qualifications
The Magistrate Court Security Officer must have the ability to read and analyze technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Must have general computer skills. At the time of appointment, must be a registered voter in Beaufort County. Must maintain all training and certification standards as established by the Sheriff's Office and the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy. Must be fluent in the oral and written communication of the English language.

Must be capable of standing or walking for twelve hours with no limitations on “normal” bending, lifting, climbing stairs, or stooping.
