As state-certified peace officers, our police officers primarily serve at the Portland International Airport and the surrounding areas, ensuring compliance with state and federal laws and supporting federal aviation regulations.
Our department is comprised of over 65 sworn officers and 8 non-sworn staff. In addition to uniformed patrol, we offer specialized assignments in areas such as detectives, canine handlers, TriMet, Metro, bomb technicians, and task forces.

Lateral Transfer Eligibility: To be considered as a lateral applicant, candidates must be currently certified or eligible to be certified as a Police Officer in the State of Oregon without the need to attend the Basic Police Academy. Salary is determined by the Collective Bargaining Agreement and years of continuous service. Wage range: $37.63 - $50.43 hourly

The Lateral Police Officer position is covered under the provisions of a collective bargaining agreement. The Police Department will review applications every two to three weeks and will conduct ORPAT testing along with panel, executive staff and background investigator interviews during comprehensive two (2) to three (3) day sessions. Specific dates will be determined at the end of each two-to-three-week review cycle.

2. Observes, reports, and acts on conditions conducive to crime and danger, such as checking buildings for security; observing residences, schools, banks and vacant areas; checking suspicious persons and vehicles. Issues citations, makes arrests or takes other action as warranted by circumstances.
3. Reports traffic hazards and directs pedestrian and vehicular traffic flow when necessary. Disburses unruly crowds at public gatherings. Enforces vehicle operation and parking regulations; issues warning or notice of traffic infraction as appropriate.
4. Responds to emergency calls; determines the nature of a call, investigates the circumstances, and takes any necessary and prudent action. May call for assistance or superior officers if necessary.
5.Takes command at the scene of a crime or accident; administers first aid and requests medical service as necessary; takes statements and interviews victims and witnesses; examines situation; records vital information regarding causes and circumstances.
6. Performs on-site tests and interrogations of individuals suspected of intoxication. When further testing is warranted, escorts suspect to Department headquarters and conducts intoxilyzer analysis or other applicable tests. Prepares records and reports per departmental procedure.
7. As required, physically detains law violators or those who may be resisting arrest; activity may require physically subduing person(s), moving through heavy underbrush and trees, jumping fences, and climbing onto or into buildings. Activity may require using deadly force to protect self or others.
8. Conducts investigation assignments of suspected illegal activity or follow-up investigations of criminal cases. May also conduct specialized investigations. Conducts interviews of victims, witnesses and suspects. Collects and documents evidence and requests lab analysis as appropriate. Submits progress reports on cases under investigation. Attempts to link crime with others of a similar nature.
9.Performs stake-outs or undercover operations to obtain sufficient evidence to prosecute or identify participants perpetrating a crime.
10. Prepares all forms and reports necessary to file felony and/or misdemeanor charges. Prepares criminal cases for prosecution with either the City or County Prosecutor. Interacts with prosecutors, attorneys, and court officials; testifies in court as required.
11. Performs community liaison activities; educates the public about crime prevention. Provides general information on laws and ordinances; explains process of filing a formal complaint, the extent of police patrols, and alternatives available to citizens. Directs citizens to appropriate authorities as necessary.
12. Serves and enforces civil processes issued by the courts to include restraining orders, orders for protection, no contact orders, anti-harassment orders, and subpoenas. Serves arrest and search warrants.
13.Prepares and writes a variety of reports and records, such as reports on crimes, arrests, property impounded, accidents, offenses, damages to property, results of investigations, affidavits, search warrants and operations orders.
14. May use computer; telecommunications equipment.

* Hillsboro Police Department offers DPPST incentives: 8% to sworn officers who hold an advanced DPSST police officer certificate and who have attained Step C of the police Officer salary range and 4% to sworn officers who hold an intermediate DPSST police officer certificate and who attained Step C of the police officer salary range. Advanced and Intermediate incentives are not cumulative.

AUTOMATIC DISQUALIFIERS
The following standards have been adopted by the Hillsboro Police Department as AUTOMATIC DISQUALIFIERS from a police department hiring process.
Additional information related to the items listed below or otherwise discovered through subsequent investigation may also disqualify a candidate.
1. Operation of a Motor Vehicle
Ability to possess a valid Oregon Driver's License. Ability to drive safely. Ability
to control a motor vehicle at high speeds. Ability to operate a motor vehicle in all
types of weather conditions.
A. Receipt of two or more moving violations within three years prior to application
may be disqualifying depending on the nature of the violations. A moving
violation for which there is a factual finding of innocence shall not be included.
B. Involvement as a driver in two or more chargeable collisions within three
years prior to date of application shall be disqualifying.
C. Conviction of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs within three
years prior to application shall be disqualifying.
D. Suspension of a driver's license once within the past three years shall be
disqualifying.
2. Integrity
Refusing to yield to temptation of bribes, gratuities, payoff, etc. Refusing to tolerate
unethical or illegal conduct on the part of other law enforcement personnel. Showing
strong moral character and integrity in dealing with the public. Being honest in
dealing with the public.
A. Any material misstatement of fact or significant admission or omission during
the application or background process shall be disqualifying.
3. Credibility as a Witness in a Court of Law
Ability to give testimony in a court of law without being subject to impeachment due
to his/her character for honesty or veracity or due to prior felony conviction.
A. Conviction of two or more misdemeanor offenses under Oregon Law as an
adult shall be disqualifying.
B. Conviction of any offense classified as a misdemeanor under Oregon Law while
employed as a Police Officer shall be disqualifying.
C. Commission of any act while employed as a Police Officer involving
untruthfulness, falsification of any official report or document, or theft shall be
disqualifying.
D. All male U.S. citizens and male aliens born after 1960 and residing in the United
States who are 18 through 25 years of age are REQUIRED to register with the
Selective Service. Failure to have registered is an automatic disqualifier.
4. Dependability
A. Missing any scheduled appointment during the hiring process without prior
permission shall be disqualifying.
B. Having been disciplined by any employer as an adult for abuse of leave, gross
insubordination, dereliction of duty or persistent failure to follow established
policies and regulations shall be disqualifying.
C. Having been involuntarily dismissed (for reasons other than lay-off) from two or

The Department of Public Safety (DPS) OHSU Police Officer is responsible for the safety and security of the OHSU community, including all OHSU members, patients, and visitors, as well as all OHSU resources, facilities, and property within the Officer's assigned area(s) of responsibility. This position provides first line duty in the protection of life and property of the citizens of the community including the enforcement of laws and ordinances, the preservation of the peace, apprehension of criminals, control of non-criminal conduct and the application of services to the community. Police protection is provided by the City 24 hours a day. Individual officers may be assigned to either an 8, 9 , 10 or 10.5 hour shifts, depending on shift assignment.
Responsible for assigned areas within the city for patrol by various means (i.e. patrol vehicle, bicycle, foot, etc.) for constant observation of all properties within the assigned area, work traffic on a selective basis and is available and responsible for answering all calls of any nature during assigned duty hours, (i.e. domestic, emergency, accident, etc.). Investigate crimes and complaints against persons & property such as murder, assault, manslaughter, robbery, rape, various sex crimes, burglary, theft and other reported crimes, and prepare and document appropriate reports and evidence. Perform public relations work in public safety, law enforcement, traffic accidents and crime prevention, and make routine checks of public dances, licensed liquor establishments and other public gatherings (i.e. sporting events, or other special community events). Render assistance and information to the public as well as emergency first aid or lifesaving methods to accident victims or persons unable to help themselves. Perform related duties as required.
Selection is based upon civil service rules. Testing includes a written exam, physical agility test, and oral interview. Incumbents must have a High School Diploma or equivalent, must be 21 years of age (must be a minimum of 20 1/2 years of age to test), a U.S. citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident, possess a valid driver's license, successfully complete the 720 hour basic training academy during the initial period of employment; possess a current State Department of L&I Basic First Aid Card or ability to obtain within 90 days, and be certified by the Washington State Toxicologist in operation of the breathalyzer or ability to obtain within 90 days.

Phase II: Interview & Eligible List
* Candidates will be invited to participate in an (in-person or virtual) interview. If you are not available for the dates offered upon receiving an invitation, please notify us via email to arrange for an interview at the next scheduled interview timeframe (if applicable).
* Candidates will be placed on a ranked eligibility list based on their Interview timeframe and scores based on the panel interview score. Candidates will remain on the ranked eligibility list for one year from the job opening date. Candidates will be contacted based on their ranked position on the eligibility list and the Police Officer vacancies available for hire. Depending on the candidates' ranking, it may take several more weeks before an update can be provided.
Phase III: Pre-Suitability Assessment
* Candidates who successfully complete Phase I and II, and next to be considered from the ranked eligible list will be invited to complete pre-suitability exam and personal history questionnaire (PHQ). This exam must be proctored virtually and generally takes 2 hours to complete and PHQ takes additional 1-3 hours to complete. Complete details, technology needs, and equipment requirements will be sent by email message(s).
* Once the pre-suitability exam is complete, candidates (with suitable results) will be invited to an executive interview.
Phase IV: Executive Interview
* Candidates will meet with members of the Gresham Police Department Command staff. Successful candidates will then be placed on an eligibility list for backgrounds.
Phase V: Statement of Personal History, Background Investigation & Conditional Employment Offer
* Once assigned to a background investigator, an email link will be sent to the candidate to complete an electronic Statement of Personal History. This link and the requested information are deadline driven and require submission within the specified timeframe. Candidates need to be thorough and honest in completing this information.
* Once the Statement of Personal History is complete, the candidate will be invited to meet in person or virtually with the background investigator for a Pre-Background interview. This interview generally takes between 1.5 to 2 hours.
* Upon successful completion of the Pre-Background screening, candidates will have a full and comprehensive background completed based on information provided in the Statement of Personal History and Pre-Background screening.
* Once the candidate passes a full background, they will receive a conditional offer of employment pending successful completion of a psychological evaluation and full medical/physical exam.
Phase VI: Psychological Evaluation & Job-Related Physical Exam
* Candidates will be scheduled for a psychological exam which will include a proctored pre-interview virtual test followed by an interview with a clinical psychologist.
* Candidates will also be scheduled with a City of Gresham contracted medical provider to complete a physical exam, treadmill test, and drug screen.
Phase VI: Confirmation of Employment letter
* If selected for hire, a candidate will be presented with a confirmation of employment letter to include hire date and swearing in.
We make every effort to minimize travel for our out of state candidates. If you are a successful candidate, there will be one trip necessary for completion of a job-related physical, treadmill test and drug screen.
