Work is normally performed in a typical indoor and outdoor setting with occasional extensive walking, and or standing. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Works under the general supervision of assigned manager to provide public safety services that will include but not limited to, assistance in the developing of specific neighborhood crime reduction initiatives, aid neighborhood watch programs, and attend community meetings. Serves as the primary liaison for Precinct Commanders, and any other initiatives and/or programs set forth by the Memphis Police Department. Connects and builds relationships with community partners and organizations. Assists in monitoring, adaptation, and execution of evaluation platform in the community. Keeps abreast of community trends, needs, and gaps. Supports the planning and implementation of community impact strategies.
Interacts and responds to upset, angry, hostile and/or verbally abusive citizens on the telephone and in-person during individual and group contacts. Gauges and monitors public and media attitudes, reactions, concerns, and issues related to department responsiveness. Functions as a liaison and contact person for the department with other law enforcement agencies, community groups, media, and individuals in the community. Assists and responds to phone calls and questions relating to Police programs, issues and public information requests as directed. Coordinates and participates in various community events. Ensures compliance with applicable department policies and procedures, and local, state, and federal laws.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Retired post certified law enforcement persons who are current active Memphis Police Reserve Officers. Must serve under the jurisdiction of the Police Services Division. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license as a condition of continued employment.

Job Summary
This is a full-time, fiscal year position working under direct supervision of the Police Supervisor (Captain) and general supervision of the Associate Director of Public Safety.
The Police Officer 1 investigates crimes and accidents, protecting faculty, staff, students, visitors, and property, facilities by law enforcement. He/she responds to calls for assistance including emergency crisis situations and provides other safety related services. He/she must be flexible to work different shifts if and when deemed necessary.
Job Duties
Assures building security, traffic control, parking lot management, and patrol readiness for crime and hazards.
Patrols the campus/specific area by foot, bicycle, or motor vehicle/motorized conveyance.
Issues citations for traffic and parking violations.
Responds to radio and telephone calls; electronic alarms such as fire alarm, personal injuries and crime in progress.
Investigates suspected crimes, report findings, and arrests suspected individuals.
Monitors, notes, reports, and investigates suspicious persons and situations, safety hazards, and unusual or illegal activity in patrol area.
Investigates accidents involving persons or property and the probable cause of accidents, and pursues appropriate course of action.
Directs and controls traffic.
Testifies in court or legal proceedings
Operates and maintains law enforcement equipment.
Keeps records and makes reports.
May perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Meets the requirements of a Certified Police Officer, per TCA 38-8-107, including completion or attendance and completion within one year following employment, of a law enforcement academy curriculum approved by the Tennessee Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission (P.O.S.T).
Meets the requirements of TCA 38-8-106, Qualifications of Police Officers:
Be at least eighteen (18) years of age
High school graduate or possess equivalency
Not have been convicted of ANY felonies
Not have been released/discharged under any other circumstance than honorable discharge from any of the armed forces of the United States
Have their fingerprints on file with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation
Must have passed a physical examination by a licensed physician
Must have passed police academy requirement, and psychological examinations
Must possess a valid Tennessee driver's license
Have a good moral character as determined by a thorough investigation conducted by Department of Police/Public Safety
Must be flexible to work different shifts if and when deemed necessary.
A background check, psychological and physical examination will be required for the successful candidate.
Preferred Qualifications
Two (2) years experience in the armed forces or as a commissioned police officer
Associate's degree
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of laws, legal codes, court procedures, government regulations, executive orders, and the democratic political process.
Knowledge of city, county and state laws.
Knowledge of effective methods of investigations.
Familiarity with geographic location of main campus sites
Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations and to determine proper course of action.
Ability to ascertain facts by personal contacts, observation, and the examination of records.
Ability to explain and interpret pertinent provisions of laws, ordinances, and regulations.
Ability to enforce laws firmly, tactfully and with respect for the rights of others.
Ability to follow and/or issue oral and written instructions.
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with students, the public and other employees.
