Job Title: Campus Safety Officer Reports To: Director, Campus Safety Department: Campus Safety Classification: Full-Time (Benefits Eligible) & Part-Time, Non-exempt, 12-months LeMoyne-Owen College is in search of committed public safety officers to ensure the safety and security of the faculty, staff, students, and property. The campus safety officer's duties include patrolling assigned areas, extensive observation, and investigating suspicious behavior, enforcing policy, apprehending suspects, and preparing incident reports. To be successful as a campus safety officer you should be able to work collaboratively with all team members of the public safety department. An outstanding campus safety officer should be highly attentive to irregularities and capable of sound judgment in demanding situations. Purpose and Scope SUMMARY DESCRIPTION The essential function of the position within the organization is to provide a wide range of security services to protect students, personnel and property both during the school day and when school is not in session. The position is responsible for monitoring school property and responding appropriately to security or safety risks, enforcing security policies and procedures and taking appropriate action in the case of violation, assisting law enforcement officers with investigations and incident response, maintaining accurate records and reports, and performing related tasks as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Graduation from an accredited high school with a high school diploma or GED; (2) two years of related security experience; or Possess P.O.S.T. certification prior to employment or be eligible for P.O.S.T. certification at the end of mandatory training required by the State of Tennessee. Must complete mandated law enforcement training course; Must possess firearm certification. Must be 21 years of age or older. Must pass a criminal background check, including a drug screening. Salary Range: $65,661.70 - $79,413.10 Works under the supervision of Memphis Police Academy staff to grasp concepts and perform a wide range of tasks which promotes public safety and security. Meets the requirements of TCA 38-8-106, Qualifications of Police Officers: Be at least eighteen (18) years of age High school graduate or possess equivalency Not have been convicted of ANY felonies Not have been released/discharged under any other circumstance than honorable discharge from any of the armed forces of the United States Have their fingerprints on file with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Must have passed a physical examination by a licensed physician Must have passed police academy requirement, and psychological examinations Must possess a valid Tennessee driver's license Have a good moral character as determined by a thorough investigation conducted by Department of Police/Public Safety Must be flexible to work different shifts if and when deemed necessary. A background check, psychological and physical examination will be required for the successful candidate. Preferred Qualifications Two (2) years experience in the armed forces or as a commissioned police officer Associate's degree Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of laws, legal codes, court procedures, government regulations, executive orders, and the democratic political process. Knowledge of city, county and state laws. Knowledge of effective methods of investigations. Familiarity with geographic location of main campus sites Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations and to determine proper course of action. Ability to ascertain facts by personal contacts, observation, and the examination of records. Ability to explain and interpret pertinent provisions of laws, ordinances, and regulations. Ability to enforce laws firmly, tactfully and with respect for the rights of others. Ability to follow and/or issue oral and written instructions. Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with students, the public and other employees. Monitors continuously the communications in the Dispatch office. Initiates responses to security incidents and channels information to approriate responders. Observes all CCTV monitors to ensure proper operation and to detect any illegal or inappropriate activity and alert patrolling security officers to same. Performs other duties as assigned. Responsibilities Documents all activities of Security officers, in dispatch log, clearly, concisely, and timely. Log all in-coming telephone or radio requests for service. Inspects and tests CCTV/DVR equipment to ensure proper functioning. Log and report any deficiencies to Lieutenant or Director using appropriate forms. Monitors CCTV images to detect any suspicious or inappropriate activity. If detected, dispatch closes officer to area to investigate and eliminate the activity. Provides courteous and friendly customer serve to any individuals entering the security office seeking assistance. Demonstrates superior telephone etiquette when answering telephone calls. Completes assigned goals. Requirements, Preferences and Experience Education Preferred: Some computer course work. Minimum: Knowledge, skills and mental development equivalent to completion of 4 years of high school, or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience.
