Job Description
Summary of Position
The Public Safety Officer is responsible for fostering and maintaining a safe learning and working environment for the Augsburg University Community. This environment is attained through proactive patrol of the campus buildings and ground and through positive interactions with the community we serve.
Available Officer Schedules
Evening 2:00 pm - 10:30 pm Sunday - Thursday.
Days the officer is scheduled are negotiable, and regularly scheduled weekend shifts are required.
Primary Responsibilities
Creating and maintaining a safe learning and working environment for members of the Augsburg University Community.
Provide required services to the Augsburg University Community, including: walking or driving escorts, locking and unlocking of campus buildings according to class schedules and events, and providing information and assistance to the community as needed.
Respond to emergency and non-emergency requests for assistance. Initiate and coordinate Police, Fire, and EMS response as needed.
Monitor campus activities and facilities through proactive patrol and observation.
Identify after hours' facilities issues and assist in the coordination of emergency maintenance response.
Prepare required incident reports completely and accurately for all security and safety related activities.
Regularly monitor and use critical infrastructure systems, including: CCTV systems, fire alarm panels, automation systems, alarms, access card systems, and parking enforcement systems.
All other duties as apparent or assigned by supervisor(s).
Work Environment and Physical Demands
Typical work environment is continually changing. Includes working in both indoor spaces and outdoors for long periods of time in varying weather conditions.
Sitting, standing, or walking for long periods of time.
Regular computer, phone, and office equipment use.
Ability to drive a motor vehicle in order to patrol campus grounds and provide escorts.
Ability to communicate in person and over the phone.

Public Safety plays a major role in protecting the St. Thomas community, and has a proven history of educating, training and enhancing the job skills necessary for professional career advancement in policing and the private security industries. Public Safety Officers at the University of St. Thomas work 12-hour shifts. A determination as to which shift is available, day or evening shift, may not be made until the six month training period has been completed. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Protect life, safeguard property and maintain peace and order at two urban campus locations through enforcement of local, state and federal laws as well as university rules and regulations
Proactively patrol a residential community of nearly 2,500 people
Prevent crime
Respond to emergency situations
Work closely with local police and emergency service personnel
Establish and foster community relationships

QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Experience Required:

Must be able to pass the self-defense and training programs within the first six months of training as a condition of employment

Type of Appointment/Work hours:
* Reserve/ Voluntary position
* Required to participate in the Field Training Officer Program (FTOP), and complete 480 hours of riding
* assignment during the first twelve (12) months of beginning PROP.
* Work a minimum of 24 hours each month in the assigned position to maintain their status.
Requirements:
* Must possess a high school diploma or its equivalency.
* Must meet requirements of State Police Minimum Standards as authorized in F.S. 943.13.
* Must meet requirements of periodic in-service training and weaponry qualifications.
* Nature of the job requires occasional physical exertion under sometimes adverse conditions.
* Possess good physical conditioning as evidenced by the ability to pass a class "A" physical examination.
* Citizen of the United States.
* No felony convictions or misdemeanor convictions involving moral turpitude.
* Must pass a background investigation, which includes, but is not limited to, criminal history screening, psychological evaluation, polygraph examination, and Driver's License review.
* To preclude a conflict of interest, persons within the following categories are ineligible to participate in PROP:
* Persons currently employed as a guard, private detective, security patrolman, or in a similar occupation.
* Members of, or applicants for, other police agencies.
* Employees of City elements which prohibit acceptance of appointment as a police reserve officer.
* Non-departmental members of the criminal justice system (i.e. correctional personnel, prosecutors, and public defenders).
* Judges, court clerks, attorneys in private practice, persons prohibited by law from being police officers, and other persons who, at the discretion of the Chief of Police, would face an immediate or potential conflict of interest due to the nature of the person's full-time employment.

Work Authorization/Security Clearance:
