SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
* Responsible for the safety and protection of all persons, including passengers, employees, and property.

The Police Officer Lateral consists of seven salary steps and will be commensurate with experience.
To be considered as a candidate for Police Officer Lateral, you must meet the following minimum requirements:
* Have satisfactorily completed a Field Training Program as a Peace Officer in the State of California.
* Prior experience must have been with a full-service agency similar to Union City, including patrol experience within one year of the date of application is desired.
* Be at least 21 years of age at the time of appointment.
* Be able to prove United States Citizenship.
* Have no felony convictions.
* 15 semester units at any accredited college in the United States is desired.
* Possess a valid California driver's license.
* Successfully pass a background investigation.

Benefits
Medical/Dental/Vision: The City provides up to $2,125/month to purchase medical, dental and vision benefits. A retiree medical benefit is provided after 15 years of service (see POA MOU for details on benefits).
Retirement: CalPERS enrollment in either 3% @ 55(Classic Employees) or the new 2.7% @ 57(New Employees) formula is dependent on the individual's eligibility, as per AB 340. Deferred Compensation Plan: A 457b Deferred Comp Plan and a ROTH IRA plan are available on a voluntary basis.
Leaves: Employees shall accrue 3.08 hours of vacation leave per pay period (80 hours per year). Initial accrual of 80 vacation hours per year increases progressively to 200 hours per year after 16 years of service. Employees shall accrue 3.69 hours of sick leave per pay period with no limit on accumulation.
Holidays: 79 Paid Holiday hours and 47 Holiday hours placed in a Holiday Time Bank.

Life Insurance: Premium is paid by the City. Life insurance and AD&D is equal to $100,000 coverage each. Additional voluntary supplemental life insurance is available.

THE POSITION:
Under direct supervision, the Police Officer Trainee attends a Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T) approved Police Basic Recruit Academy and successfully completes the academic and physical training required for appointment to the classification of Police Officer Recruit II. Police Officer Trainees are considered at-will employees. Police officer probationary status begins when the trainee is sworn in as a Police Officer Recruit II after completion of the police academy.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Retirement: Through CalPERS, employee will be responsible for 7% of the CalPERS retirement plan. After completion of the academy the CalPERS Retirement Benefit will be either 3% @ 55(Classic Employees) or the new 2.7% @ 57(New Employees) formula is dependent on the individual's eligibility, as per AB 340. The City does not participate in Social Security therefore there are no Social Security tax deductions (except 1.45% Medicare).
Deferred Compensation Plan: A 457b Deferred Comp Plan and a ROTH IRA plan are available on a voluntary basis.
Sick Leave: Employees shall accrue 3.69 hours of per pay period with no limit on accumulation.
