Environmental Elements
Employees attend a basic police academy for training. This is a developmental classification designed to attract and retain persons with the potential to be appointed to the Sworn Police Officer classification. Trainees will be in simulated Police Officer situations, but have no direct exposure to dangerous situations.
The Police Recruit classification is considered a full-time, unrepresented, temporary classification to be used while attending a California Peace Officers Standard and Training (POST) basic academy. These positions are eligible only for those benefits listed below and as required by applicable state and federal law.
This is a full-time, unrepresented, temporary classification, and is paid on an hourly basis rather than a semi-monthly basis.
Retirement: CalPERS 2.7 % @ 55 with highest year formula is provided for current City of Monterey employees or new employees who were hired prior to January 1, 2013 and who are currently active or have been active within six months of the date of hire in the CalPERS retirement system. The employee retirement contribution for these employees is 11% and is deducted on a pre-tax basis.The retirement formula for new employees who do not meet the criteria stated above is 2% @ 62 with highest three year compensation. The employee retirement contribution for these employees is 8.25% and is deducted on a pre-tax basis. The City participates in the Medicare portion of Social Security.
Health Plan Spending Fund: A minimum of $1,086.89 per month up to $2,872.83 per month, dependent upon level of participation, may be used to purchase medical benefits for the employee and dependents through the PERS Health Plan Program, dependent dental, additional life insurance, dependent care, and/or health care expenses through a Section 125 Flexible Spending Account.
Dental: Fully paid employee premium by the City.

The SecurityOfficer will monitor and secure library property against criminal activity and damage, as well as maintain pleasant welcoming atmosphere for staff and customers. The SecurityOfficer will monitor inside the library building, as well as the outside perimeter of library building and library parking lot. Duties include, but are not limited to:
Interact with a diverse population of library customers and employees to preserve a safe and inviting community environment; provide customer service to library customers, such as providing general information and assistance.
Patrol multiple library branch locations, including building interior and exterior, to identify and deter illegal activities, report suspicious behavior or dangerous situations, while promoting a positive visual presence.
Address and deescalate library security situations, such as SJPL Behavior Policy violations and interact with library customers in a positive manner.
Determine, using sound judgement, the best means of resolving security situations, including informing customers about library policies, reporting incidents appropriately to local law enforcement, producing accurate documentation/reporting, warning customers of rule infractions or violations, and assisting staff with escorting people out and serving suspension paperwork.
Investigate and document potentially hazardous conditions and communicate with library facilities, executive management, Police, Fire, and other agencies as appropriate; liaise with the partner University Police Department and San Jose Police Department, as needed;
Write incident reports of library conduct policy violations, activities and irregularities, such as equipment or property damage, theft, presence of unauthorized persons, or unusual occurrences. Maintain security-related records and information.
Draft library customer suspensions requests and serve suspension paperwork; gather and present data related to incidents.
Evaluate and recommend revision of security and emergency procedures and policies.
Interpret, implement and relay legal statutes, laws, departmental policies, procedures, and regulations.
Provide security-related trainings to Library staff.
May provide training to contract securityofficers, monitor effectiveness and evaluate process improvements; ensure current training of all security personnel is complete.
Respond to emergencies at any of the branch libraries; ensure accurate reporting and follow up with Library executive management; Respond to medical emergencies and may provide first aid or CPR.
Current CPR and American Red Cross Standard First Aid certification desired, but not required time of hire. Training can be provided.

Ability to use a personal computer for entry of police reports into the automated records management system (ARMS). * Must possess and maintain a valid license to drive in the State of California, pass the Defensive Training Class, and be insurable under the University's liability coverage.

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT:
Various working environments including indoor, outdoor, inclement weather, and other adverse conditions. Work may include rotating shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays. May be required to work on short notice. May be required to travel. Personal protective equipment required including police uniform, duty belt and weapon.
