This is a full-time position represented by the Police Officers Guild with a current Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) effective 1/1/25 - 12/31/27. The salary listed on the announcement is the base salary, and the salary upon hire will be $9,032.20 per month. Officers also have opportunities to receive additional compensation and pay incentives based multiple factors, as outlined in the CBA. These include longevity pay starting after five (5) years of service, bilingual pay after completing field training and proving proficiency through a bilingual exam, and education pay for police-related Associate or Bachelor (or higher) degrees. Many specialty assignments also come withpremium pay, starting at 2% of the straight-time hourly base rate. Officers may have multiple specialty assignments, but at no time will an officer receive more than 10% premium pay from these assignments.
Primary Duties
As a member of APD, you will perform general police work involving the protection of life and property, enforcement of laws and ordinances, maintenance of order, and prevention and investigation of crimes. This work involves a substantial element of personal danger and employees must be able to act without direct supervision and exercise independent discretion in emergencies. All officers are responsible for recognizing the social importance of police functions, for tactful and courteous treatment of the public, and for conscientious and efficient performance of duties under little direct supervision.

Application and Testing Process
Under the direct supervision of a Police Lieutenant and Sergeant, with general supervision by the Chief of Police, the employee's behavior is governed by policies and procedures of the Police Department; local, state, and federal laws; and court decisions.
This is a responsible human relations and skilled position in public safety. The employee in this position is responsible for the protection of the public's safety, the prevention of crime, and the enforcement of local, state, and federal laws.
The employee exercises considerable discretion in regulating daily activity and use of enforcement powers.
Work includes patrolling the community by vehicle and on foot. Bicycle and marine patrol duties are assigned upon qualification. The employee responds to calls for service, which include reports of criminal activity, traffic safety, crime prevention, and general public safety problems.
The employee conducts preliminary and continued investigations for reported crimes and traffic accidents. This responsibility includes crime scene processing, interviewing witnesses and victims, and enforcing specific violations of the law.

Application and Testing Process
Under the direct supervision of a Police Lieutenant and Sergeant, with general supervision by the Chief of Police, the employee's behavior is governed by policies and procedures of the Police Department; local, state, and federal laws; and court decisions.
This is a responsible human relations and skilled position in public safety. The employee in this position is responsible for the protection of the public's safety, the prevention of crime, and the enforcement of local, state, and federal laws.
The employee exercises considerable discretion in regulating daily activity and use of enforcement powers.
Work includes patrolling the community by vehicle and on foot. Bicycle and marine patrol duties are assigned upon qualification. The employee responds to calls for service, which include reports of criminal activity, traffic safety, crime prevention, and general public safety problems.
The employee conducts preliminary and continued investigations for reported crimes and traffic accidents. This responsibility includes crime scene processing, interviewing witnesses and victims, and enforcing specific violations of the law.
The employee performs several assignments to prevent crime and traffic accidents. These assignments are educational and inspectional: presentations on prevention techniques; conducting security surveys; security checks on home and businesses; inspection of business practices and policies; and inspection of building construction for compliance with the security ordinance.
Performance is monitored daily by the Police Sergeant, Lieutenant, or Chief of Police, for compliance with policies and laws. However, the employee usually performs with minimum supervision.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Ensures Department services are provided with exceptional customer service and the highest level of ethical standards.
Patrols the community in a vehicle, on foot, or bicycle and/or boat when assigned, to deter and detect criminal activity.
Emphasis on customer service approach to work collaboratively with community partners to improve safety and reduce crime.
Responds to calls for service: administers first aid to injured persons, documents allegations of a crime; protects persons and property; and advises on preventative practices.
Performs preliminary and continued investigations (traffic and criminal): searches for and collects physical evidence; and, interviews witnesses and victims.
Enforces traffic laws by monitoring traffic movement visually and with radar, contracts violators, and issues traffic citations.
Conducts Security Surveys for businesses.
Inspects new construction for compliance with Security Ordinance.
Recovers and returns stolen property.
Testifies in court.
Writes reports on alleged crimes, traffic accidents, and arrests.
Performs crisis intervention in sensitive and dynamic situations; explains content of law to persons involved in a dispute, describing the process of filing a formal complaint, the extent of law enforcement powers, and the responsibility of citizens to follow prescribed legal procedures, provides referrals to appropriate community resources.
Attends meetings, seminars, and other training classes to maintain current up-to-date knowledge of criminal and civil laws, as well as technical skills in order to remain proficient in the performance of duty; maintains awareness of newly-enacted laws and recent court decisions and their effects on police duties and responsibilities.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The employee primarily drives a vehicle, walks, or rides a bicycle when assigned.
There is considerable walking, bending, stooping, reaching, and at times, running.
Since the employee takes physical custody of persons, there is a certain amount of physical contact and confrontation. Employee may be vulnerable to personal injury in some cases.
The work sometimes requires above average physical agility and conditioning.
The employee is exposed to all weather conditions, and other outside environmental conditions.
May be exposed to hazards such as chemicals, temperature extremes, occasional driving at high speeds, bloodborne and communicable diseases.

QUALIFICATIONS:
At least 21 years of age at time of application
High school diploma or GED equivalent
US citizen or lawful permanent resident
Ability to read, write, and speak English fluently
Valid Washington State driver license (or ability to obtain prior to hire) with a history of safe driving and maintenance throughout the duration of appointment
Score a minimum of 70% on Oral Board interview
Successfully pass background investigation, emotional intelligence screening, polygraph, psychological, and medical examination.
Additional Lateral Entry Requirements:
Successful completion of a State accredited law enforcement academy; AND
Previous employment as a Commissioned Police Officer on a full-time basis by a law enforcement agency exceeding a consecutive 12-month period; AND
Shall not have had a lapse in employment as a law enforcement officer for a period exceeding the previous twelve months, calculated from the day of appointment.
Additional Exceptional Entry Level Requirements:
Persons who have not attained commissioned peace officer status but have successfully completed a basic law enforcement academy recognized as a full equivalent to the Washington state basic law enforcement academy by the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission within the preceding twelve months and will be given a Conditional Offer of Employment within that twelve-month period; OR
Persons whose peace officer certification, commission, and/or licensing has lapsed because of a break in service as a full-time, fully commissioned peace officer in this or any other state or territory for more than twenty-four months but less than sixty months and who are required to attend the equivalency.
All requirements of WAC 139-05-210 shall also apply. If separated from a law enforcement agency, the separation must be without cause or resigning in lieu of discipline.

DESCRIPTIONS
This position's responsibilities are to patrol school property, and to respond to incidents pertaining to the safety and protection of district students, staff and property.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
Reports to the Assistant Director of Human Resources; in addition, will report to school principal building administrator(s)/receive guidance. Receives coordination and guidance from the Risk and Security Manager.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Depending upon the individual assignment, the Campus Safety Assistant may perform all or a combination of the following:
1. Responds to calls pertaining to the safety and protection of district students, staff and property.
2. Provides guidance and instruction to students on consequences of their actions; discusses options and choices.
3. Patrols areas in and around schools as needed; confronts trespassers as necessary; assists in the intervention of individuals who are committing or suspected of committing crimes on or near school property. Assists the principal and staff in dealing with disruptive students.
4. Talks with students and non-students to gather information on potential problems, and confronts them as appropriate. Reports violations of laws, district rules and regulations to school authorities.
5. As directed by the school principal, investigates rumors, activities or incidents which have occurred or are likely to occur that are disruptive to the campus environment, including drugs, alcohol, fights, crimes and gang activity; builds relationships to promote communication.
6. Informs school and district administration of problems on or adjacent to campuses involving students and non-students.
7. Assists the principal in responding to incidents involving alcohol, drugs, fights and the confiscation of weapons from students and non-students.
8. Prepares reports describing situations around the school campus for use in student discipline, law enforcement agencies and the courts as necessary; maintains a variety of records and statistics.
9. Works with local law enforcement and school district officials to enhance the safety of the campus and students; provides information to staff and students concerning property protection and safety measures; maintains positive working relationships with students, staff, and outside agencies.
10. Assists the principal or law enforcement officers in the investigation of crimes; questions suspects, witnesses and victims of crime; maintains confidential information as appropriate.

Exam Notes: * Candidates are NOT required to complete the NTN Personal History Questionnaire (PHQ) for the Seattle Police Department. * If you have taken the NTN exam for a department other than SPD within the last year, you can elect to send your scores to SPD at no cost via the "Department Add" feature in your NTN account. Physical Ability Test: While scheduling your written exam, the NTN system will prompt you to schedule your Washington Physical Ability Test (WAPAT). We encourage you to complete your WAPAT with NTN as soon as possible. Passing the WAPAT is required to move forward in the hiring process. If you are an out-of-state candidate, you will not be expected to travel to Washington to complete your WAPAT. 4. Backgrounding: Candidates who pass the WAPAT will receive a link via email from the Seattle Police Background Unit to fill out their personal history information. SPD will then conduct a thorough investigation into the candidate's history. Ensure that you meet the minimum qualifications for this position listed below. 5. Medical Evaluation, Psychological Exam, and Polygraph Exam: Candidates must complete a medical evaluation that includes drug screening, medical history, vision and hearing test, and a stress EKG test. A psychological exam will be completed via Zoom. The medical tests can only be completed in person at specific Seattle locations currently. 6. Final Offer of Employment: If the candidate completes and passes all the above steps, they will be given an official offer of employment with the Seattle Police Department. PREFERENCE POINTS The City of Seattle offers multiple forms of preference points. Preference points can only be applied to passing exam scores. POSITION DESCRIPTION The Seattle Police Department is seeking individuals committed to understanding and protecting the ethical, cultural, and ethnic values of the City of Seattle and its residents as Police Officers. As first responders, Police Officers are vital to public safety and under regular supervision, perform basic police services in accordance with the mission, goals, and objectives of the City of Seattle Police Department and in compliance with governing federal, state, and local laws. Entry Level Police Officer describes a candidate with no prior law enforcement experience or training, and those who have completed a self-sponsored academy and have not worked as a commissioned officer/deputy for a law enforcement agency. Exceptional Entry Police Officer describes a candidate who has successfully completed a basic law enforcement academy and FTO, but who does not have the required 24 months of full-time service as a law enforcement officer in the last 36 months to qualify as a lateral applicant. Exceptional Entry Police Officer candidates must test with the entry-level candidates and are not eligible to take the Lateral entry exam. * Provides for public safety by maintaining order, responding to emergencies, protecting people and property, enforcing motor vehicle and criminal laws, and promoting good community relations. Explains laws and police procedures to residents. * Operates a patrol car. Patrols city streets, areas and businesses to deter criminal activity and promote public safety. * Investigates conditions hazardous to life or property; conducts initial investigations of crime and crime scenes; may assist detectives in criminal investigation work. Conducts search and seizure activities as appropriate. Collects and preserves crime scene and evidence. * Arrests and/or detains suspected violators of the law. Reviews facts of incidents to determine if criminal act or statute violations were involved. * Records facts to prepare reports that document incidents and activities. * Renders aid to accident victims and other persons requiring first aid for physical injuries. * Transports individuals in custody. * Presents evidence and testimony in judicial settings. The City of Seattle provides police service 24 hours per day, seven days per week. Shift work, including nights, weekends, and holidays, is required. ELIGIBILITY STANDARDS * Be at least twenty and half (20.5) years of age. * Hold United States citizenship, OR have legal permanent residency in the U.S., OR be a Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipient. * Attained a high school diploma or a certificate of high school equivalency (GED). Have not used Opium, Morphine, or Heroin within the previous five (5) years, and *
Have not used Methamphetamine, Crank, Crystal, Ice, Speed, Glass, or Amphetamine within the previous five (5) years, and *
Have not inhaled aerosols, sometimes referred to as Huffing (paint) or Whippits (Nitrous Oxide) or used Khat within the previousthree (3) years, and *
Have not used any illegal drug(s) while employed in a criminal justice and/or law enforcement capacity, and *
Have not manufactured or cultivated illegal drug(s) for the purpose of the sales/marketing of the drug(s). *
Have not sold or facilitated the sale of illegal drugs. * Please note that use of illegal drugs and the illegal use of prescription drugs, referred to in this standard, means the use of one or more drugs, the possession or distribution of which is unlawful under the Uniform Controlled Substances Act. Offers of employment are conditioned upon a pre-employment drug screening to confirm abstinence from illegal drug use. Traffic Record A candidate's driving record will be thoroughly assessed and may be a factor for disqualification. Examples of infractions/traffic crimes that may be disqualifying: *

Suspension of your driver's license within five (5) years of the exam date *
Three (3) or more moving violations (speeding, negligent driving, etc.) within five (5) years of the exam date will be carefully reviewed. *
Two (2) or more accidents within five (5) years of the exam date, wherein candidate was judged to be at fault and/or charged with a moving violation. Criminal History A candidate's criminal history, including all arrests, prosecutions, deferred prosecutions, "Alford" pleas, and non-conviction information will be thoroughly assessed and may be grounds for disqualification. The following will be disqualifying: *
Any adult felony conviction. *
Any misdemeanor or felony conviction while employed in a criminal justice and/or law enforcement capacity. *
Any domestic violence conviction. Employment Record A candidate's employment history, including any terminations, or leaving an employer in lieu of termination, will be thoroughly assessed and may be grounds for disqualification. Financial Record A candidate's credit history, including excessive credit card debt or unresolved accounts in collection will be thoroughly assessed and may be grounds for disqualification. Failure to pay income tax or child support. Professional Appearance All applicants are expected to maintain a professional appearance at all times. SPD has the sole discretion in determining what is considered professional, as it relates to the position of Police Officer. Any and all tattoos, branding (intentional burning of the skin to create a design), voluntary disfigurement (marring or spoiling of the appearance or shape of a body part), or scarification (intentional cutting of the skin to create a design) shall be carefully reviewed by SPD on a case-by-case basis.
