Job Summary
The Maricopa County Community College District Police Department invites highly motivated and professional law enforcement candidates to a new and exciting opportunity as a collegiate Police Officer - Lateral.
The Police Officer - Lateral will report directly to a Police Commander or designated supervisor and performs general and specialized law enforcement, such as preserving public peace, protecting lives, property, and the rights of the public. Essential Functions
* Routinely interacts with, and provides assistance to members of the college community, visitors and allied first responders such as fire, medical and other police personnel. Unlocks rooms and buildings; assists allied criminal justice agencies in the service of criminal and subpoenas and other court orders
* Deters and prevents crime by patrolling buildings, facilities, properties, and other areas in the immediate vicinity of the Maricopa Community Colleges
* Responds to complaints or requests for assistance; investigates criminal activity and takes appropriate action. May be required to arrest, detain, or subdue a resisting offender using justified and reasonable force where appropriate; may conduct searches of persons, places and things, possibly seizing and impounding property and evidence, protects crime scenes
* Responds to calls for service including alarms, requests for medical assistance, critical incidents, traffic collisions, reports of criminal activity and other emergencies/non-emergencies
* Observes, reports and/or remedies unsafe or problem situations and assists in identifying health and safety hazards
* Conducts face to face interviews; observes, gathers, records, processes and preserves evidence
* Prepares detailed written reports; presents testimony and evidence in court; mediates disputes
* Directs traffic and/or parking activities; enforces motor vehicle operation and traffic regulations; assists motorists with vehicle problems
* Performs crowd control and civil emergency response duties
* Provides special services including providing personal welfare and money courier escorts
* Provides public awareness and community education presentations
* Trains and directs the work of non-certified Public safety Aides and other Public safety personnel
* Performs other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED and the successful graduation from an AZPOST certified training academy.
Note: Applicants who possess an AZPOST certification but have not completed a probationary period with a previous agency may be considered for hire with a positive recommendation from their previous chain of command at the rank of Commander or higher.

Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications:
* Possession and maintenance of a valid Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training (AZPOST) certification as a Peace Officer in the State of Arizona, including the satisfaction of all qualifications (age, citizenship, background, psychological, ethical, medical, or otherwise) required for such certification, at the date of or subsequent to the date of hire. A valid certification is to indicate that the individual is authorized to engage in enforcement duties, carry a firearm, wear or display a badge, make arrests, perform patrol functions, and operate a marked police vehicle. Certifications that are restricted are not considered valid for the purpose of initial hire.
* Possession and maintenance of a valid State of Arizona Driver License (Class D) with an initial and ongoing driving record to the satisfaction of MCCCD.
* Current CPR/First Aid certification is required for the duration of employment within this classification.
Background Check: Because of the confidential and sensitive nature of information handled, successful completion of a comprehensive background investigation, which may include, but is not limited to, polygraph testing, fingerprinting, and a psychological examination to the initial and ongoing satisfaction of MCCCD is required.
Firearms: Positions within this classification have frequent exposure to firearms and are regularly required to carry a firearm. Incumbents must successfully complete initial and ongoing firearms qualification in compliance with AZPOST requirements. Such qualification will occur on an annual basis or on another schedule, in compliance with any applicable laws, rules, or regulations, as determined by MCCCD. Incumbents must maintain the legal ability to carry and utilize firearms in the course of their duties at all times during employment within this classification.
Substance Abuse Testing: Due to the nature of police work, positions within this classification shall be subject to pre-employment, ongoing/random, and/or incident-based alcohol, drug, and/or controlled substance testing in compliance with any applicable laws, rules, and regulations.

JOB CLASSIFICATION SUMMARY
Positions assigned to this class are responsible for performing general and specialized police work involving the enforcement of laws and ordinances, protecting life and property, conducting investigations, detection and arrest of violators, effecting crime prevention, providing community services, responding to requests for assistance, or acting in some other specialized assignments of comparable responsibility.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the first level in the sworn police job family responsible for performing law enforcement activities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
The following are intended to describe core work functions of this classification. While the level and broad nature of essential duties may not change, specific work tasks will vary over time depending on the Town's needs.
* Monitors radio communication and responds to community requests, calls-for-service, and emergencies.
* Assists other officers, department personnel, and Town staff as needed.
* Investigates crimes, complaints, accidents, and other situations.
* Administers first aid, secures crime and accident scenes, conducts investigations, and identifies and preserves evidence.
* Interviews individuals with complaints and provides an appropriate disposition or refers to proper authorities.

* When appropriate, apprehends suspects, makes/processes arrests; and transports offenders.

* Prepares and completes a variety of reports to provide documentation of daily shift activities, investigations, law and code violations, civil process, warrants, individual statements, critical incidents, and evidence management.
* Prepares, obtains, and/or serves warrants, court orders, civil processes, and other legal documents.
* Enforces traffic laws, codes, and regulations; facilitates traffic safety around accidents or congested areas; provides assistance to disabled motorists.
* Enforces other state laws and local codes/ordinances.
* Reviews and prepares case documentation for trials, hearings, depositions, etc.
* Provides testimony for trials, hearings, depositions, etc.
* Attends all designated meetings, briefings, training, and required appearances.
* As assigned, serves as a liaison to community groups, businesses, individuals, and other stakeholders to promote public safety, crime prevention, and awareness.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (at job entry)
Education and Experience:
* High School Diploma or GED;
* Completion of a Law Enforcement / Police Academy OR
* Completion of an AZPOST-certified, open enrollment program within the past 3 years;
Special Requirements:
* This position has been identified as a safety-sensitive position by Human Resources, per State and/or Federal Law. Upon conditional offer of employment, the candidate selected will be required to undergo testing for alcohol and controlled substances;
* A thorough background investigation will also be conducted and will include a polygraph exam, psychological examination, an AZPOST medical examination, and testing for alcohol and controlled substances;
* Out-of-state candidates will also be required to complete a physical agility assessment as part of the testing process.
LICENSING/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
* Valid Arizona Driver's License;
* Must be certified as an Arizona Police Officer within three (3) months of hire and continue to maintain Arizona Peace Officer and Standard Training (AZ POST) standards;
* For AZPOST certification, out-of-state candidates will be required to complete the AZPOST waiver process which includes firearms qualification (day, night, target ID/discrimination), tactical driving qualification, a Physical Aptitude Test (POPAT), a written test, and documentation for (academy) equivalency training.

4. Prepares reports, complaints, affidavits and other related technical legal documents regarding the progress, findings, and results of the investigative process to document the facts of an incident and facilitate the apprehension, prosecution and conviction of the perpetrator. 8. Adheres to all training, policies, procedures, chain of custody, rules of evidence and laws. Maintains strict confidence and security of all data, financial accounts, information, intelligence, metrics, audio, video, computer analytics and meta data, police reports, supplements and associated case files, physical evidence, photographs, statistics and any other materials that are confidential and sensitive to all cases, investigations, personnel records and the operations or property of the SRPD and SRPMIC.

Minimum Qualifications

Under general supervision, performs a variety of law enforcement work associated with patrol, traffic enforcement, and investigations.
Minimum Qualifications:
Must possess Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board (POST) certification as a Peace Officer with no lapse of certified status and be in good standing with current or previous employer; OR be able to obtain certification within six (6) months of hire. Must be 21 years of age, a citizen of the United States, and meet or exceed the physical standards established by the Arizona POST. Must have a valid Arizona Driver's License and be able to meet the Community's insurance carrier requirements. Must be able to successfully complete an extensive background check, including a polygraph test, psychological evaluation and medical exam.
Examples of Duties:
Patrols an assigned area of the Community in a radio-equipped vehicle checking businesses/residences, discovering/preventing criminal activities, and enforcing State/Community laws/ordinances.
Responds to calls involving automobile accidents, assaults, domestic disturbances, and other criminal activities/civil complaints to secure the scene, conduct preliminary investigations, and establish law and order.
Arrests, questions, and transports suspects and/or persons with outstanding arrest warrants to jail facilities.
Ensures that arrested persons are processed (booked) into jail in accordance with State and Federal guidelines and Police Department and jail procedures.
Prepares incident reports regarding all activities to facilitate preparation of prosecutable cases.
Secures/investigates crime scenes to ensure that the collection, preservation, and handling of physical evidence and property meets established professional and legal standards.
Gathers and records/preserves information and evidence. Interviews/interrogates victims, suspects, and witnesses to obtain and verify information pertinent to the investigation and resolution of a variety of criminal/potentially criminal incidents.
