SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
Performs general police duties, processes, and operations for the protection of life and property and enforces federal, state, and local laws, prevents crime, and preserves peace in a railroad surface transportation environment.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
Annual: 1 full year of prior service at probationary rate or over 1 year break in service - $92,928, 5 Year Lateral (First Year at 95%) with less than 1 year of break in service from previous Department - $109,563.50, Top Step (100%) - $144,514.Amtrak offers a comprehensive benefit package that includes health, dental, and vision plans; wellness programs; flexible spending accounts; 401(k) retirement plan; life insurance; paid time off; reimbursement of education; Public Service Loan Forgiveness eligibility; Railroad Retirement sickness and retirement benefits; and rail pass privileges. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
* Responsible for the safety and protection of all persons, including passengers, employees, and property.
* Performs patrol duties on foot and in a police vehicle for prolonged periods of time.
* Performs security and safety activities at incidents, including, but not limited to, derailments, floods, fires, hazardousmaterial incidents, special trains, and company functions involving railroad property and responsibility.
* Responds to call for service and assistance, identifies hazards and takes proactive steps to resolve problems.
* Arrests and detains offenders, conducts thorough preliminary and follow-up investigations to solve crimes andreduce criminal opportunities, conducts searches and seizures, and serves warrants.
* Effectively deals with individuals under various circumstances to resolve disputes and neutralize hostilities, mediatesdisputes; assists individuals who are sick and need assistance, administers first aid when necessary.
* Maintains proficiency and safely operates police equipment, including vehicles, computers, and weapons, including afirearm.
* Communicates verbally in person and by radio; presents testimony and evidence in administrative, civil, and criminalproceedings; maintains open line of communications with law enforcement and criminal justice agencies, internaland external partners, as necessary or when directed.
* Records information and prepares a variety of detailed reports with clearly organized thoughts and conclusions.
* Reads, interprets, and applies federal, state, and local laws and regulations, railroad and department policies andprocedures.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
* Seeking laterals and recently retired law enforcement professionals.
* Must possess a valid California P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate upon appointment.
* Minimum of one-year experience as a full-time, sworn patrol officer with a California police or sheriff's department,and have passed a patrol field training program and probationary period. Attach current California Basic Certificatewith resume.

Must be 21 years of age or older. High school diploma or equivalent; successful completion of a California P.O.S.T. Basic Academy (or valid waiver) and current California P.O.S.T. certification prior to the date of appointment. Must have a valid California Driver License. Working knowledge of current law enforcement methods and procedures. Working knowledge of current criminal codes and laws. Effective interpersonal skills to resolve a wide variety of sensitive situations. Effective oral and written communication skills, including the ability to write clear and comprehensive reports. Demonstrated ability to think and act effectively in emergency and sensitive situations. Possession of a P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate, Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification, or prior law enforcement experience preferred. Will be required to achieve and maintain EMT certification.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Graduation from High School, or a GED is required. College coursework in Criminal Justice, behavioral, or other social science coursework is preferred.
Age: Must be 20 years of age at the time of application.
Convictions: Must be of good moral character, with no felony convictions
Citizenship: Must be a United States citizen, or able to provide proof of application for US citizenship at least one year prior to applying for a Police Officer Trainee position with the City of Ventura.
Medical: Excellent physical condition. Must meet California POST medical and psychological standards.
Other: Candidates are required to undergo an extensive background investigation, polygraph examination, post-offer psychological evaluation, and post-offer medical examination, including screening for drugs and alcohol.
LICENSE/CERTIFICATES
License: Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license and acceptable driving record are required.

APPLICATION AND SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONNAIRE REVIEW
A review of application and supplemental questionnaire will be conducted and applicants meeting the minimum qualifications and desired background experience for successful performance as a Police Officer Trainee will continue in the next step of the process, the written examination. Applicants must successfully meet the written examination requirement to be certified to the eligibility list.
WRITTEN EXAMINATION
Applicants successful in the application and supplemental questionnaire review are required to successfully meet the qualifying written examination requirement as follows:
Submit California Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Entry-Level Law Enforcement Test Battery (PELLETB) test score with your application. Test scores are valid for exams administered within one year of application submittal and applicant must submit a letter from the testing agency on agency letterhead at time of application submission. Applicants must meet the minimum T-score of 42 and acceptance of other agency's T-score is subject to verification with the testing agency.
OR
Submit National Testing Network (NTN) FrontLine National Written examination test results through NTN. Test must have been administered within one year of application submittal. Applicants must meet the minimum scores of: Video (65), Reading (70), Writing (70) and acceptance of NTN test scores are subject to verification with National Testing Network.
OR
Register yourself to participate in the NTN FrontLine National Written examination administered by NTN as soon as possible. There are three components to the written examination: a video-based human relations test, a reading ability test, and a written language ability test. Testing takes approximately 2 ½ hours. ELIGIBILITY LIST
Applicants that meet the written examination requirement by providing qualifying POST PELLETB or NTN test scores or passing the NTN written examination will be certified to an eligibility list, which will be sent to the Police Department for further consideration. The Police Department will administer the remaining processes outlined below.
