Per department policy, employees must reside within a one (1) hour normal drive time measured on a drivable route from the employee's residence to the West Des Moines Law Enforcement Center.
Requirements:

* Be a certified police officer in the state of Iowa
* Not have had a break in law enforcement service of more than 180 days.

* Must meet physical standards through a medical examination by a physician
* Not have been previously decertified in Iowa or another jurisdiction
* Not have committed any act that could result in decertification under 501 - Chapter 6

About the Role:
The Off Duty/Retired Police Officer role is designed to leverage the extensive law enforcement experience of retired or off-duty officers to provide security, safety, and law enforcement support in various non-traditional or private settings. Minimum Qualifications:
Must be a retired or off-duty sworn police officer with a valid law enforcement certification or license.
Demonstrated knowledge of local, state, and federal laws applicable to law enforcement duties.
Ability to pass background checks and maintain a clean disciplinary record from prior law enforcement service.
Valid driver's license and the physical capability to perform law enforcement duties as required.
Strong communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with diverse populations.
Responsibilities:
Provide security and law enforcement presence at private events, businesses, or community functions as assigned.
Direct Traffic to assist logistics companies in helping trucks exit their facilities and roadways.
Respond promptly and appropriately to incidents, emergencies, or suspicious activities while off duty or in a retired capacity.
Conduct routine patrols and surveillance to deter criminal behavior and ensure the safety of people and property.
Collaborate with local law enforcement agencies and private security teams to coordinate safety efforts and share relevant information.
Prepare detailed reports documenting incidents, observations, and actions taken during assignments.

Job Requirement:
- Pre-Employment Criminal Background Check and Drug Screening
- Ability to sit, stand, and walk for up to 3-4 hours at a time
- Reliable transportation

- Ability to write legible, accurate and easily understood reports
- Must be assertive, yet controlled in dealing with confrontation
