Under the direction of the Chief of Police or his/her designee, the Institutional Police Officer works in the San Francisco Community College District Police Department and acts as a peace officer pursuant to Section 830.32(a) of the California Penal Code and Section 72330 of the California Education Code. The San Francisco Community College District Police Department is a Peace Officers' Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) participant. The officer's primary functions are to provide protection of life and property and to enforce state and local laws and college policies within the jurisdiction of San Francisco Community College District campuses. In accordance with District policy, the San Francisco Community College District Police Department is a sworn unarmed department. Employees are required to sign a memorandum acknowledging their understanding of the District's policy in this regard.
Job Duties
RESPONSIBILITIES AND JOB DUTIES:
1. Maintain law and order within and surrounding City College campuses and other district sites.
2. Provide a safe and secure environment for the students, faculty, staff and visitors.
3. In a professional and courteous manner; respond to all emergencies on District property.
4. Uphold the laws and statues of the State of California, municipal and criminal, enforce state and local ordinances, rules and regulations related to the San Francisco Community College District.

12. Assist students, faculty, staff, and visitors by providing directions and responding to questions and inquiries; provide service escorts for any person requiring assistance.
13. Respond to faculty, staff and student complaints in potentially hostile situations; intervene and mediate in disturbances and disputes.
14. Testify and present evidence in court as necessary.
15. Assist in the event of natural disasters and other extraordinary circumstances.
16. May perform other duties as assigned by Chief of Police or his/her designee.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
This classification may require maintaining physical condition necessary for walking, standing, running or sitting for prolonged periods of time; bending, stooping, kneeling, crawling; moderate to heavy lifting and carrying; possible exposure to physical injury and other dangers inherent in police work. Must possess satisfactory hearing capabilities and visual acuity of at least 20/100 correctable to at least 20/30 in each eye. Officers are required to wear police uniforms, a bullet proof vests, and required police gear.
Officers are required to work flexible shifts, rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays. Officers may be assigned to any of the District campuses under the department policy and/or at the discretion of the Chief of Police.
The department currently operates two shifts: Day shift and swing shift. Shifts are 5 days/8 hours per day or 4 days/10 hours per day; 7 days a week.

Benefits
1. Additional Days Off with Pay. As stipulated in the appropriate bargaining agreements and board resolutions, Classified employees working full year (260 days/year) work schedules are granted, as paid days off, the days between Christmas Day and New Year's Day, as well as an additional five (5) paid days during spring break. Eligible school-term-only (STO) employees who are not scheduled to work the designated days between Christmas and New Year's Day shall be granted three (3) paid days off to be scheduled by mutual agreement between the employee and supervisor. Eligible school-term-only employees who are not scheduled to work on the days designated as Spring Break will not be paid for these days off.

Written Exam (Pass/Fail)
For this recruitment, applicants have the option to use either Option A) FrontLine National Law Enforcement Examination administered by the National Testing Network (NTN) or Option B) California PELLETB Exam. Either exam is pass/fail with the minimum scores posted below.
OPTION A) FrontLine National Law Enforcement Examination (NTN)

You will need to establish an account with NTN. A fee is required to take the FrontLine National examination. Applicants with demonstrated financial hardship may submit a request to have the fee waived prior to test registration. There are three components to the FrontLine National exam: a video-based human relations test, a reading ability test, and a written language ability test. The passing scores are:
* Video: 60
* Writing: 70
* Reading: 70
Applicants must pass each test independently. The scores are not averaged.
OPTION B) Post Entry Level Law Enforcement Test Battery (PELLETB)
The PELLETB exam, developed by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST), measures reading comprehension and writing abilities.
Applicants who have taken the PELLETB written within the last two years and have achieved a t-score of 42 or higher will also be exempt from the written examination. A copy of the documentation, which includes the date of the PELLETB test and score on valid agency letterhead, must be submitted with your application.
Waiver of Written ExamApplicants who have completed a Bachelor's degree or higher may be waived from the written examination. Applicants will be required to submit verification in order to waive the written exam.
Applicants must first meet the minimum education requirements as stated above and be a United States High School Graduate, or have passed a G.E.D. or the California High School Proficiency Examination, or have an AA or higher degree from a United States accredited college or university in accordance with Government Code 1031(e).

Applicants who attain passing scores on the FrontLine National Exam or the PELLETB or have a Bachelor's degree or higher will be notified to take a Physical Ability Test (PAT) and an Oral Interview (OI).
Physical Ability Test (Pass/Fail)
The PAT will assess physical abilities needed to perform essential police officer tasks and successfully complete academy training through four events. The physical abilities include: muscular strength, muscular endurance, aerobic capacity, equilibrium, and abilities involving all-out effort.
Oral Interview (100%)
The OI will assess community involvement, interest and motivation, interpersonal skills, problem solving, oral communication skills, and abilities not tested by other examination components. The OI score will be used to place applicants on the eligible list.
Candidates will be notified via email of their pass/fail status on the PAT and OI. Those who do not pass may request another opportunity to re-take the test no sooner than three (3) months [90 calendar days] from their previous attempt.
Candidates must pass each of the selection components unless otherwise noted on the announcement. The Department reserves the right to waive selection components for individuals based on prior experience or certification.
Candidates who pass all test components (i.e., Written Exam, Physical Ability Test, and Oral Interview) will have their names added to the eligible list. Candidate names will remain on the list for a maximum period of 24 months.

No-Show Policy
Applicants who do not appear for their scheduled examination date without prior notification will be marked as a "no show." Applicants who do not attend the examination on their rescheduled date will be removed from the selection process.
What else should I know?
Eligible List / Certification Rule
The Police Department has the option to hire any candidate on the eligible list ("Rule of List"). Therefore, placement on this list neither guarantees nor implies that you will be offered employment. The Police Department will administer the remaining processes outlined below to determine who shall advance further in the hiring process and be considered for appointment.
Candidates who are not selected after the background process will be withdrawn from the eligible list and may re-apply two years from the date of their notification.

OPTION A) FrontLine National Law Enforcement Examination (NTN)

Applicants with demonstrated financial hardship may submit a request to have the fee waived prior to test registration. There are three components to the FrontLine National exam: a video-based human relations test, a reading ability test, and a written language ability test. The passing scores are:

OPTION B) Post Entry Level Law Enforcement Test Battery (PELLETB)
The PELLETB exam, developed by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST), measures reading comprehension and writing abilities.
Applicants who have taken the PELLETB written within the last two years and have achieved a t-score of 42 or higher will also be exempt from the written examination. A copy of the documentation, which includes the date of the PELLETB test and score on valid agency letterhead, must be submitted with your application.
Waiver of Written ExamApplicants who have completed a Bachelor's degree or higher may be waived from the written examination. Applicants will be required to submit verification in order to waive the written exam.

Physical Ability Test (Pass/Fail)
The PAT will assess physical abilities needed to perform essential police officer tasks and successfully complete academy training through four events. The physical abilities include: muscular strength, muscular endurance, aerobic capacity, equilibrium, and abilities involving all-out effort.
Oral Interview (100%)
The OI will assess community involvement, interest and motivation, interpersonal skills, problem solving, oral communication skills, and abilities not tested by other examination components. The OI score will be used to place applicants on the eligible list.
Candidates will be notified via email of their pass/fail status on the PAT and OI. Those who do not pass may request another opportunity to re-take the test no sooner than three (3) months [90 calendar days] from their previous attempt.
Candidates must pass each of the selection components unless otherwise noted on the announcement. The Department reserves the right to waive selection components for individuals based on prior experience or certification.

Physical Ability Test (Pass/Fail)
The PAT will assess physical abilities needed to perform essential police officer tasks and successfully complete academy training through four events. The physical abilities include: muscular strength, muscular endurance, aerobic capacity, equilibrium, and abilities involving all-out effort.
Oral Interview (100%)
The OI will assess community involvement, interest and motivation, interpersonal skills, problem solving, oral communication skills, and abilities not tested by other examination components. The OI score will be used to place applicants on the eligible list.
Candidates will be notified via email of their pass/fail status on the PAT and OI. Those who do not pass may request another opportunity to re-take the test no sooner than three (3) months [90 calendar days] from their previous attempt.
Candidates must pass each of the selection components unless otherwise noted on the announcement. The Department reserves the right to waive selection components for individuals based on prior experience or certification.
