Sedgefield Country Club company history timeline

1926

The first course was called Valley Brook and it officially opened in the spring of 1926.

1929

Founded in 1929, RGA is the second oldest golf course in the Raleigh area and equally popular among senior, women and junior golfers.

1939

His 59 set the course record and the tournament record, and his 4-stroke first-round lead tied Lawson Little in 1939 for the largest 18-hole lead in tournament history.

1941

He also won the tournament in 1941, joining Sam Snead as the only two-time winners of the event to date.

1954

The first ACC golf tournament was staged in 1954 at Old Town Club and was won by Arnold Palmer, who had re-entered Wake Forest after a three year hitch in the Coast Guard.

1960

1, 1960 Greensboro Sit-Ins at Woolworth’s was just beginning to be felt across the nation and the Civil Rights Act was still some four years down the road.

The 1960 tournament followed a hard winter in the Piedmont Triad and, at tournament time, Starmount wasn’t in the best condition.

He also won the tournament in 1962.

1963

When he started having success as a professional, he endowed the Buddy Worsham Scholarship at Wake Forest in 1963.

In 1963, Palmer established the Buddy Worsham Memorial Scholarship at Wake Forest University in memory of his friend and teammate who died in a car accident while in school.

1965

In 1965, Palmer agreed to attend the first Champions Dinner.

1972

Palmer never won the GGO, coming close in 1972 when he had a two-shot lead with three holes to play.

1974

The Hickory native played 72 holes without a bogey making him the first bogey-free champion on TOUR since Lee Trevino did it in 1974.

1981

In 1981, he made his final appearance and finished tied for 45th.

1996

Reed was the first player to win on TOUR with his wife (Justine) as his caddie since Steve Stricker won the 1996 BMW Championship with his wife (Nicki) caddying.

2003

McConnell Golf, founded in 2003, is currently the largest owner of private clubs in the region.

2006

Just prior to the 2006 tournament, Wyndham Worldwide was introduced as the new title sponsor of the Piedmont Triad’s PGA TOUR event.

2008

2008Carl PetterssonThe Wyndham Championship returned to Sedgefield Country Club beginning with the 2008 tournament.

2009

His birdie at the ninth hole clinched the 59 and a fitting celebration followed; he would finish the opening round with a four-stroke lead over 2009 champion Ryan Moore.

2010

2010Arjun Atwal2010 was a year of firsts for Arjun Atwal and the Wyndham Championship.

2011

One of the best fields in tournament history challenged Sedgefield Country Club in 2011, but for the 16th time in tournament history, the Wyndham produced a first-time winner in Wake Forest alumnus Webb Simpson.

2013

A reflection on the 2013 Wyndham Championship playoff

No one then dreamed that the trio would later rule the PGA Tour and wind up as hall-of- famers, just as precious few in the late summer of 2013 realized that they were seeing authentic stardom in the making.

Turns out there was more than a little drama before Reed and Spieth got to the decisive second hole of the playoff in 2013.

2014

Colombian golfer Camilo Villegas became the third international golfer in the previous five years to win the Wyndham when he captured the 2014 tournament.

Old North State Realty joined the McConnell Golf offering in 2016 and is proud to extend unbeatable real estate values for the luxurious lakeside community.

2016Si Woo KimKorean golfer Si Woo Kim won the 2016 Wyndham Championship to become the 18th international champion and the 18th first-time winner in tournament history.

2019

2019J.T. PostonThe Wyndham Rewards Top 10 made its debut in 2019 with Wyndham Rewards paying $10 Million to the top-10 finishers in the final regular season FedExCup point standings – the Wyndham Rewards Top 10.

2020

With the COVID-19 pandemic plaguing the entire world, the 2020 Wyndham was played without fans for the first time ever.
