1970

When originally enacted in 1970, the Plant Variety Protection Act had an exemption built in for farmers wanting to save seed from a protected variety.

1994

In 1994, there were significant amendments made and one was to expand protection up to 20 years.”

When the 1994 amendments were passed, the farmer-to-farmer sales exemption was eliminated.

But certificates post-1994 prevent saved seed from being sold.

2004

In 2004, Trisler offered 33 conventional (non-GE) corn varieties, about 40% of its seed corn platform.

2006

Monsanto purchased Heritage Seeds, based in Reynolds, Indiana, the same year, in 2006, and eventually stopped selling non-GE varieties through this new acquisition altogether.

2016

In 2016, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, in conjunction with the National Association of Plant Breeders, organized an Intellectual Property Rights for Public Plant Breeding Summit.

2017

The concerns are warranted: Dicamba drift affected approximately 3.6 million acres of soybeans in 2017.
