Role Scope:
The Sr. Associate, Investigations ("Investigator") reports directly to the VP of Compliance (Compliance Officer) and serves a key role in ensuring investigations are completed in accordance with federal and state requirements and organizational policies to promote a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement. The Associate Tax Auditor conducts the most complex field audits and investigations of businesses and organizations suspected of intentionally operating in the underground economy, for the purposes of upholding the California Unemployment Insurance Code (CUIC) and California tax regulations, and develops and forwards lead referrals to Area Audit Offices or the Investigation Division for appropriate action.
Field work is required in a team environment. Additional responsibilities include presenting and communicating information, both verbally and in writing, to internal and external customers-either individually or in a group setting-and representing the Department at hearings.
The Labor Enforcement Task Force (LETF) program is designed to identify the most egregious offenders in the underground economy for targeted enforcement action. The LETF Associate Tax Auditor will conduct on-site inspections and audits of non-compliant businesses. Partnership agencies include the Department of Consumer Affairs, Employment Development Department, and Department of Industrial Relations.

Position is located in the Oakland Field Office.
Under close supervision of the Supervising Tax Auditor, the Tax Auditor (TA) conducts the least to moderately difficult field audits, and fraud/tax evasion audits. The TA audits accounts, attends basic tax law and audit training classes, makes audit appointments, meets with taxpayers and their representatives, explains the audit findings, assists in identifying interrelated fraud schemes, may testify in court to liabilities determined, and prepares appropriate audit reports and written correspondence to taxpayers.
